This was my favorite as a child. I drew a picture in high school, in my sketches for class. But I remember sketching her to the song. I can't, for the life of me, remember how I was able to get ahold of it. Because all of us here know, it was on VHS. But seriously, it's eerily haunting yet beautiful. There is an artist who just released her version last year. "Marinas Song" by, EIRLYS Check it out! Still beautiful, but much slower.

I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. I watched it so much that to this day when my daddy makes fun of me, he goes around saying "Oh Marina!" Lol. About 10 or 15 years back when I was cleaning out our old cabinet that had our VHS tapes, I found this movie and decided to watch it. I watched it all the way through and by the end of the movie, I was bawling my eyes out, and I NEVER EVER cry, especially for a movie. That's how amazing this movie is and will always have a special place in my heart.

This is closest to the real story and is really a deeper story with more of a spiritual meaning to it. The Disney version is more light and more happier which is still a good film in its own respect, they made it their own. However my favorite is the original story. You really feel the emotions and hurt as the story goes on.

Eventhough this version is beautiful in its own way, I personally believe Marina's family didn't deserve to lose her so suddenly. I can't imagine how heartbroken her father and grandmother felt when they didn't see her one final time before her passing. They must've regretted not following her sisters when they found her on the ship, otherwise they could have seen her more recently. They obviously wouldn't have cared to see her as a human.
@Passions5555 Жыл бұрын
In the original fairytale, Marina's sisters were the only ones to try to save her and keep tabs on her. When her father and grandmother found out, she left them to become a human girl to pursue the prince they were indeed heartbroken by her doing this, but they were also mad and offended as well. They saw her actions as rejecting what she was (a merperson and tgerefore her race) and, by extension, rejecting THEM as her family and loved ones for a stranger. So the father and grandmother disowned her and washed their hands of her deciding not to have anything more to do with her. Her sisters were the only ones who refused to give up on her and tried to save her from her situation. Hence, their deal with the seawitch to save her life.

@@Passions5555 Omg that’s depressing, poor Marina. That hurts. But like, I see the father and grandmother’s pov. Just sad that they gave up on her
@Passions5555 Жыл бұрын
@susanstorm7910 it was a weird commentary in how the sisters as young women themselves understood their younger sisters' desire to give up everything to pursue the love of a man and why even though they were deeply hurt by their sister's reckless and selfish actions, they understood them and fought for her. The tragedy here is that if they were able to rescue their younger sister, she still would have been shunned and turned out by her father and grandmother. She would have no home. Death was the only thing for her.
@susanstorm7910 Жыл бұрын
@@Passions5555 that’s very depressing, poor marina. her sisters were the only ones who wanted her to live and not die, it’s sad that her father and grandmother shunned her. it wasn’t her fault, she did it all for love. a one-sided love tho
@RegularInvader Жыл бұрын
It's also hard to imagine how Marina's life would have turned out if the Prince did marry her after all. She would have kept her human life, but did not think it through if she truly would have been happy because humans don't have the same life expectancy as merpeople. I believe it would have been hard on her if she were to have conceived children with the Prince because there was no guarantee they would have gotten a chance to meet her side of the family.

@@indigothecat In this context, it's swapping a specific characteristic (physical or personality) of a well known established character for political agenda. I didn't watch the recent Disney version of Little Mermaid, but they first race swapped Ariel to black, just because "white people are bad" agenda is currently popular (#1). And I heard that this specific Ariel is all about, "I don't need no man" crap, because Disney wants to push feminism down people's throat (#2). I'm not sure if there's any LGBT+ agendas in the movie, but given that it's Disney, I'm willing to bet that there is. And so on.

The original Japanese title of Marina's Song is "The One I've Waited For" (待っていた人, Matteita Hito). magnetdance translated the Japanese lyrics into English: You, the one I've waited for from the day I was born. You, the one who first showed me the happiness of love. Even if a storm were to come from somewhere as long as we're together there's nothing to fear, With that white pearl you held on to lululu... If you don't have love you'll be all alone. No matter where you go you'll be all alone. You, the one I've waited for from the day I was born. You, the one who taught me what happiness is. Even if a sorrowful parting were to come don't forget that I love you, Of that white pearl that disappears into the sea lululu... If you don't have love you'll be all alone. No matter who you're with, you'll be all alone. Even if a storm were to come from somewhere as long as we're together there's nothing to be afraid of, And even that white pearl you hold on to lululu... If you don't have love you'll be all alone. No matter where you go, you'll be all alone.
@crusherjoe85194 жыл бұрын
The English version, "Marina's Song," kept the original Japanese background chorus vocals, which sing "lululu." Search Matteita Hito on KZbin and you'll find the original Japanese version of Marina's Song, including the full length version in Japanese. To the best of my knowledge, no full length version in English exists. The Little Mermaid is the English literal translation of the original Danish title, Den lille Havfrue*. In Japanese, the Little Mermaid is called Ningyo Hime (人魚姫 or にんぎょ姫), which means, Mermaid Princess. Whenever you see "Ningyo Hime" or even "Mermaid Princess" mentioned in Japanese entertainment media (anime, manga, light novels, video games, music, etc.), they usually mean the Little Mermaid. * "Den" = "The"; "lille" = "Little"; "Havfrue" = "Mermaid"
