So I’ve watched the latest Disney soulless remake: The Little Mermaid 2023 and I’ll talk about all the flaws that this dumb remake has. If there’s any parents watching this video, I beg you, please, PLEASE make your kids watch the animated movie instead of this remake.

None of these performances match their animated counterparts not a one, but especially not Halle Bailey and you guys can hate me. That’s perfectly fine, but she didn’t give me anything that said Ariel, not in personality not an acting, and certainly not in singing nothing she gave me was Ariel Nothing but again, none of them gave me what their animated counterparts gave me 1989 will always be far superior to this trash heap.

Disney live action remakes unnecessarily and uselessly changing stuff for no reason at all challenge (IMPOSSIBLE). The same has also happened in the Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, Cinderella remakes… it’s so unnerving!!

As always, your point always hit right on the spot, the roast is just chef's kiss, I hope you'll get better because I can't help but noticed to hear how raspy you sound here, I hope Ursula's deal wasn't the cause. (Forgive me for such a lame joke but I hope you'll recovered quick!) Welcome back and sorry that you had to watch this monstrosity for us. It always surprise me how much Disney can lowered themselves more and more as each remake came out with no real purpose or actual soul, like you said, simply existed to show how quick they can speed run themselves for a failure as if they're too successful to even care on how much they'd lose from it, it's mind-blowing. Another thing I might want to add is that they've completely missed the point on Under The Sea for including Ariel to sing along, (I get it she can sing and have a lovely voice but that very reason shouldn't be an excuse for them to let her sing when she shouldnt) that song was supposed to convince Ariel how dangerous the surface is so she'd stop dreaming about them so why would she joined them sing and then disappear out of nowhere, the timing is just so off, plus none of the fish or whatever sea creatures in that song played the instrument that Sebastian sing about, it's just so out of touch. Removing the sisters' song in the introduction is also a bad move, it take away Sebastian's talent as the musician, I guess you can't show your talent if it might surpassed the main character's ability now and the replaced scene for that doesn't served any real values, it's also a bad writing on how King Triton didn't even noticed that Ariel is missing until he's done greeting his daughters when her chair isnt even that obscure. Oh and don't make me started on Part Of Your World, I can make out another essay on it. In the end, there's truly a lot more issue to speak about this movie but it'll take so long I might as well make a book on it, it's so sad to see how much they've butchered every character and neat details from the animated version, first it was Belle to me now it's Ariel and the next could be Snow White and Moana and even Lilo, yes I'm aware about Jasmine and Cinderella but you've already pointed them out, Disney sure love following the recipe for a successful failure.

Yeah, every Disney Princess remake always ends up being such a downgrade from the animated version but those remakes are always advertised as the best thing ever since sliced bread, and Disney did that *a lot* with this Ariel remake, but it’s so funny how Disney made the worst advertisement choices ever (like releasing the scuttlebutt song before its opening day in theaters lol), which makes its feeble performance at the box office even more amusing, but the changes they made in the story were so painfully bad, oh my God…

Wouldn't it be fun if Flounder, Sebastian and Skuttle were animatronics? If Ariel wears a tail like professional mermaids did? Using practical effects for the sidekicks and the heroine would be nice to see. Same if there's hand-made corals and algae. It would look good with a 3D background of the ocean. I missed practical effects. They were really good in Hellboy 1 and 2 especially the troll market. Seeing differents monsters with unique designs was so cool 😀Here there's too much 3D and the ocean looks ugly while in real life it's beautiful. All it does is making the movie boring, good job Disney!

True! Plus, Disney could actually make good animal characters in the past (like in the Narnia movies). They could show and express emotions despite looking flawlessly realistic, so I don’t know what went wrong with Disney to the point of having awful dull looking animal characters like in the little mermaid and the Lion king remakes.

My God, did I have opinions on this remake when I attended an Early Screening last year! I truly believe that even if the casting directors at Disney had hired an actress who closely resembled Ariel's Animated Counterpart, her appearance alone would not be enough to keep the film 'afloat' BA DUM TSS of bad writing/bad direction/etc. My concerns for TLM 2023 weren't really about Halle Bailey's casting so much as they were towards the redundant alterations of an exceptional story in order to market the film to 'modern audiences.' 1989 Ariel is a flawed protagonist from the beginning of the story and her personality should have remained intact when translating her from 2D to 3D (she's a headstrong teenager, after all). I felt no Father-Daughter chemistry between 2023 Ariel and Triton and I think part of it is a result of Ariel's distant demeanor towards her father throughout every interaction. The audience never actually sees Remake Ariel smiling to Triton until the very end of the movie, while OG Ariel constantly provides OG Triton an exultant expression even while being reprimanded for her irresponsibility. Musically, Halle was phenomenal and it's where she truly shines as the "red-headed" mermaid Disney-Renaissance fans are familiar with, but I whole-heartedly feel she and the director did not collaborate enough to conjure much more compelling emotions during the intense moments of the story. Melissa McCarthy did manage to become reminiscent of Pat Carroll's theatrical performance as Ursula in some scenes, but I didn't find her ominous enough to be considered a threat to Ariel or Triton (it could just be that I'm used to seeing McCarthy in a comedic light outside of this production). With all due respect, Javier Bardem just felt like 'Anton Chigurh' with a moist beard and a mediocre crown, Jonah Hauer-King's Eric felt like too much of a clone of Ariel minus the masculinity of his animated counterpart, and I can't recall anything noteworthy about the rest of cast or their performances in-and-out of song at the top of my head.

I feel like the only good live action remake is Jungle book it had great acting and special effects while sticking close to the source material but every other live action remake is either too preachy or doesn't understand the theme of source material there adapting feeling more like a hollow crash grab.

I’ve never watched The Jungle Book remake but I’ve heard that it was really good, so maybe I’ll give a try and see it for myself! But yeah, other than that, basically every Disney Princess remake is the same damn thing and I guess people really got tired of it precisely when The Little Mermaid 2023 was released (and the fact that Disney keeps deflecting all fair and legit criticism and just accusing people of racism makes the live action fatigue even worse- not denying the racism that indeed happened but you get what I mean ;) )

Thank you for this; you stated many points that I have known of this film for so long. Character portrayal, unnecessary scenes, and why those songs; it all did not fit my love of this movie. And I love your points on Grismby. I will say the only good thing about this was Halle's opportunity as Ariel. I say that in the nicest way because every girl had the dream of bringing Ariel to life, and she accomplished it, just need more practice in being in the time period of fairytales, in other words, being a girl in love. She did not bring the whimsy, the happiness, or the act of love I remember from my childhood. I tried listening to her "Part of Your World," but it didn't bring me joy. When I hear the original, it makes me want to dance, pretend swim like a mermaid, and feel happy for a dream. Her version, it made me feel like I need to sit, be quiet and listen to her. And no matter what, I will have say my nicest, yet true honest points on this movie to anyone who says "This Ariel is the best." Thank you for your honest review.

Thank u! I’m glad you liked my honest review about TLM! ^^ I totally agree with your points about Haley Balley as Ariel. I guess Disney realized that “empowering, girl boss” princesses (like Emma Watson’s Belle and Naomi Watson’s Jasmine) weren’t likable or sympathetic in the slightest so they didn’t make Ariel an annoying self entitled lead, but they still missed the point of what made Ariel so sympathetic and likable and, just like you’ve said, Halley didn’t show any of that in her portrayal. Also, regardless of how amazing her voice is, she sings every song of this movie like she’s singing the anthem at the Super Bowl, so it all ends up being about “the actress” and not “the character”…

I'm not mad that Ariel has a different skin color. The actress did a good job to represent her personality and she can sing unlike Emma watson in the Beauty and the Beast remake. Making her saving Eric by killing Ursula was really stupid. First, how can she stands on her tail in a boat? Second, it made Eric useless and it's not respectful to the fans of the character. Third, it would been more cute and important if both killed the witch. They will united their forces, defeat a villain AND prooving to Triton that humans and mermaids can respect each other. It would be a powerful message instead of '' Strong independant women who don't need a man '' saves the day. Also, if Ariel doesn't need a man to be happy; why she would fall in love with a prince? You don't understand your own character Disney, shame on you 😠 Making Skuttle a girl for no reason AND singing well was a useless change. It didn't add anything to the character, didn't make her likable and didn't developp her relation with Ariel either. Also... a rap seriously Disney? Not only this is a bad choice but all it does is making Skuttle annoying and unlikable. Nice job!

Agreed. The “Ariel killing Ursula” thing was so stupid! The worst thing to me about this change also is how the fans of this remake say that Eric originally killing Ursula in the 1989 movie “made no sense”. This speaks TONS about who Disney remakes are made for (a bunch of brain dead consoomers who were fans of the original movie to begin with). Also making Scuttle a girl made no sense, plus her voice acting by Awkwafina was painfully bad (just like her scuttlebutt rap).

I personally didn’t see the character Ariel. I only saw Halle. Maybe she had some good mannerisms but that’s it. Singing is her #1 strength

There were some things I liked. Halle Bailey was amazing! The musical numbers were very well done. The under water sequences were great. Once we got out of the water, the romance didn’t work as well for me. Great review 👍

I liked the scene of Ariel’s reflection on the water as she is about to reach the surface for the first time and when she helps Max to reach the boat. It really made me think how this movie had potential of telling a new version of Hans Christian Anderson’s story only if Disney had guts to do so (like the remakes of Snow White & the Huntsman and Maleficent. Wether people liked those movies or not, they had actual courage to tell their own versions of it instead of being a carbon copy of the Disney classic version).
