Grace, the original inhabitants of the Caribbean are the native, pre-colonial peoples of the Americas. They are not black. Blacks are not indigenous to the Caribbean, they were brought to the Caribbean during the slave trade. In fact, the largest ethnic group in Trinidad are Indo-Trinidadians, who are the descendants of British Indian indentured workers who were brought to the island. All this to say, if you want to make a "historical" or representative case for who should play a fictional mermaid in the Caribbean, shouldn't it be an Indigenous actress? Or if representation of the current population is required, then why not an actress from the largest ethnic group: Indo-Trinidadian? The argument for a black actress to play Ariel can as easily be applied to a white actress, since neither ethnic group is native to the Caribbean.

I think she was talking about in relation to the culture that was created there, not who’s native lol. Black people are who created the calypso islander culture that the original little mermaid uses. It’s culture appropriation for a Native Caribbean person or a white person to take from black Caribbean culture. Ariel was never a redhead in her initial concept. She was blonde. April was neither a ginger, nor white. Zendaya’s MJ is a completely different character from Mary Jane, they made it clear time and time again that they’re different characters. Velma isn’t a redhead, she’s been depicted as brunette for most of her iterations, when she is not her hair is auburn, which is brown with red undertones. Also, “replace” is such a weird, ignorant and unintelligent choice of words, because there’s no replacement happening, when ginger hair isn’t exclusive to white people only. There are black and even Asian people with naturally red hair. Do they not deserve representation too?

It's not that any group doesn't deserve representation, but replace is the right word when nothing new is being created. and the funny thing is that it's kind of an obvious pattern at this point. Is it as romantic as Aladdin was? Because we all remember how swoon worthy that film was for a lot of us and if this comes even close then it's a winner. I do love Halle more already than i did Mena or Naomi so that's a plus.

But I can see when casting is chosen to check off specific skin color rather than match it to the actual character that was created long time ago. But if you like to be classified to a separate group of people and labeled then that's fine. I just personally think everyone should be treated equally.

Grace, in Carribean, Trinidad, Tobago, the majority population are Blacks and Indians (yes, India was under colonization for 250 years under British). Indians were brought in those islands by British as "Indentured labourers" a fancy word for slavery but British did not took them back to India so they make huge population of those region. Unfortunately, those Indian faced religious persecution by fellow Black Christians as those Indians were Hindus. Sadly none of movies based in those regions show Indians.

This movie might be great , it might be a succé. But i promise you it won’t get a sequel. If Aladdin didn’t get one this won’t either Also both the Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent sequels were huge flopps.

Aladdin was on track to get a sequel until the Will Smith Oscars incident. This will likely get a sequel if it does very well which it has a good chance of doing so because of its popularity. Maleficent 2 did good by getting $491+ Million.
