Yes, king Triton actually rules the Atlantic Ocean. His kingdom, Atlantica, is located there. Oh, and Eric missed because he was in the water. It’s not that easy, especially if you’re not trained. Also, I think that Ariel is happy, it’s shown in the sequel that she’s still quite close to the sea and her family) And I think that her becoming human was more logical, because Eric is shown as the only heir to the throne in his kingdom. Well, his parents aren’t there either, so maybe he’s already a ruler, but the point stands anyway: if he becomes a merman and leaves, his kingdom will be left without a king. And Ariel is the youngest of the seven daughters of Triton, so it’s fine for Atlantica if she leaves.

Triton thought Ariel had fallen for a Merman, Sebastian blurted out that she'd fallen for a human instead. That line from Ariel "Why don't you go tell my father? You're good at that!" was so savage because she called him a grasser and expressed how angry she was with him. The creatures in Ursula's lair was probably seaweed. Ursula took Ariel's voice because that was how Eric identified her so she made it more difficult for Eric to know for sure that it's her. She also used her voice to trick him when she disguised herself as Vanessa. The ending in the book was very different to this film. Eric did in fact marry someone else, Ariel's sisters came with a knife they got from the sea witch and said that if she uses it to kill the prince she will turn back into a mermaid and can return to the sea. Ariel couldn't do it so she went to the pier, threw herself into the ocean, dissolved into sea foam and died.

I see so many people group Triton in the “bad parents” category; even seen someone put him in the same pool as Mother Gothel. 😓 I am SO glad you saw his growth in this!! 💖 He had some issues to begin with, but that’s exactly the point - and I’d say he was the one to grow as a character the most. Ariel’s arc was more about defeating her circumstances, which was no small feat either!
@sudsysoap3 жыл бұрын
Triton was actually a good parent and reacted like how any parent would. Ariel was a child she was only 16 and he was wary of humans because his wife died because of humans. I don't really see how he is a bad parent, but then again they say that once you start agreeing with the parents in the movies that's when you know you grew up already. I think as kids we can see how Triton can be seen as a "bad father" but now that we are older we understand how he acted. Also At least he let his youngest daughter be happy on land.

@@sudsysoap YES! thank you I completely agree I know this is an old comment but I'm glad to see it mentioned. humans are incredibly dangerous. @@sudsysoap I don't disagree. I definitely was more harsh with him as a kid, but growing up I realize that yes, it's understandable why he's so paranoid but that doesn't justify him being overprotective with Ariel, any parent that does that will alienate their kid and he did break her stuff which he didn't need to do.
@sudsysoap2 жыл бұрын
@@alopex7430 i should have been more specific😅 i agree with you. Triton is a more of a good parent than a bad one (for reasons i have already stated) but no parent is perfect and everyone makes mistakes that they regret. Yes it was “wrong” of him to destroy her things but i wouldnt say him not allowing her to go up to the surface is being “overprotective” just protective like i said her mother died the last time everyone was free to go up to the surface and its extremely reasonable why he wont let her go up there again. Its also reasonable why he had a grudge against humans during that time. However like i said he did realize his mistakes and regretted them. Theres literally a scene where he’s alone and upset saying “what have i done” and in the end he did let her be happy on land. Which is why overall he should be seen as a “good” parent. The only real “wrong” thing he did was destroy her things and over react thats it

The thing about Ursula's deal with Ariel is that she deliberately timed it for when Ariel would be the most open to suggestion. The girl just had a huge fight with her dad, her sisters think she's weird and aren't quiet about it, and her dad even destroyed a collection she valued. What's more, Ariel is a teenager at that point where that kinda argument is going to make anything sound better. Ursula is a very good manipulator, and struck when she'd be the most likely to make a rash, stupid decision and even made it sound like Ariel not having her voice would only improve her chances of getting what she wants. That woman has got the charisma and brains to be very dangerous, which is probably why so many people still love her.

I actually had an idea for a fanfic that focuses on King Triton while Ariel is gone. After three days of searching, there is still no sign of Ariel, with Triton's subjects completely exhausted, and nowhere left to look. Frustrated, Triton goes to search for Ariel himself, and his search eventually leads him to the surface, as Ariel would often go there against his wishes. While there, Triton sees a happy human family playing on the beach, and seeing their love for one another triggers a memory of Triton's own family from when his wife was still alive. There may even be a moment where a member of the human family helps a fish that had washed up on the beach back into the water, much to Triton's shock. In this moment, Triton sees in this human family, his OWN family, and finally realizes that humans are not unfeeling barbarians, but actual PEOPLE. Realizing at last how terrible he'd been, Triton is utterly ashamed of his previous actions, and gives up his search for Ariel, believing that he doesn't deserve to get her back, and that she'd be better off without him. But then, Sebastian arrives to tell him about Ursula, spurning him back to action.
@sudsysoap3 жыл бұрын
I liked the first part but also I don't think any parent would just give up on their kid especially a minor. + triton only hated humans and thought they were dangerous because his wife died BECAUSE of humans. For the most part your story could end with him thinking that he will let her be for a while and would think that she will be just fine and he can try again in searching later on (rather than him thinking she's better of without him, cause that's just cruel, Ariel was just 16, if your kid went missing would u really give up and think that kid is better off without u?, could be starving or lost or hurt for all you know, btw im not mad im just saying)

@@sudsysoap Okay, maybe having Triton give up on finding Ariel, and thinking that she's better off without him is going a bit far. My childhood favorite! Finally!!! Great reaction as always Welchy :) Some answers and fun facts for you: 1. The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen, so it's widely assumed that Atlantica is close to Denmark and in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, although I've also seen Italy offered as a location. Either way, Triton rules the Atlantic Ocean, and yes, has seven daughters. Those were all Ariel's older sisters. His wife tragically died before the events of this movie. 2. Ursula is a boss in Kingdom Hearts, yes xD 3. Eric missed with the spear likely because he's not used to throwing weapons underwater. Water resistance can make a huge difference in power & aim, especially if you're not trained. 4. Ariel technically doesn't leave everyone behind! In the opening sequence of the sequel film, they show Ariel & Eric returning to introduce Triton to their daughter, Melody, and it can be assumed that visits like this are a regular enough occurrence that they know where to sail to meet the merpeople. 5. Disney keeps it vague, but traditional merpeople are, in fact, carnivorous... and eat people.

Sebastian (the crab 🦀 ) didn’t mean hopeless as an offense he meant Ariel was hopelessly in love after seeing her fall asleep smiling because of her feelings for prince eric

If you liked the music in this, the people who did the music in this Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, also did the music for Beauty and the Beast. Howard Ashman died before he could ever see Beauty and the Beast in theaters

The one thing that bothers me about the plotline of this movie is the whole "humans are evil because they eat fish" plotline. Like, fish eat other fish, crabs eat other crabs, etc. all the time. So what exactly do the merfolk and fish eat in Triton's kingdom exactly?

"If you were a good composer, you would improvise." Lol that's...not really how that works. Not showing up for rehearsals is bad enough but bailing on a performance with no warning is a $#!+y thing to do to all the people who worked hard to put it together. If he knows she has a habit of that sort of thing, then as a director, he should either have had a backup, or not given her the solo. (Kate! Stop talking! Your choir geek is showing!) Huh? Oh, right. I'll just uhh... be over here...

It's really bizzare seeing people react to a movie I grew up with. I was 3 when it came out and well... aside the fact I was tossed in a pool as an infant with barely any support, this is also a big reason why I never had a fear of the water. I think by the time I was 4 I was swimming unaided and loved going about underwater a lot.... even though people hated me doing it. This was one of a handful of movies I was obsessed with. I wish I could afford patreon, I'd have to request The Last Unicorn. It isn't well known but is adapted from a great book and featured animators that would go on to working on animating for Ghibli.

Thinking of a portrayal of sharks being good, the first thing that comes to my mind is Finding Nemo. The sharks there were trying to be good. One of them just ended up smelling Dory's blood and going on an instinctual rampage. The other two sharks were even trying to calm him down! They were shown to be good at the end of the movie, too

They animated this film from trailers in the studio lot because the studio was being broken up and sold off. This film literally saved Disney studios. And yes... this was when I realized I am attracted to voices as well.

MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIE!! The looks on your face were so funny, I probably shouldn't have been eating watching this. But, something just hit me. I'm sure this movie has a ton of plot holes, but the thought that came to me is how unusual it is everyone just assumes she lost her clothes in a supposed shipwreck and had to wear a sail. Like, how often did people lose their clothes in shipwrecks back in the 1600's or so? I realize the movie is heavily playing off Splash (live action Disney mermaid movie from the 80s that came before this. Madison the mermaid came out of the water nekkid (nothing shown), and was also my childhood), but it just seems weird.

LOL, when you said "This was made waaaay before I was born, I wasn't even an egg." That comment one, made me feel old, and two, made me slump in my chair and sigh. This was my first movie at the theaters ngl. Ariel has 6 other sisters, her mother was killed by a human ship collision when she and her siblings were very young and that is the main reason Triton hates humans

Jodi Benson was amazing at changing the tone in both Ariel's voice (gentle) and Vanessa's(hostile) making them sound different but the same. 💛 Idk how the Trident works with killing someone but I often wondered the same thing on WHY the hell Triton would sign that contract becoming helpless to save or help anybody in the ocean ever again. He basically just HANDED Ursula his family and Atlantica. Why couldn't he just turn Ursula into a starfish or some shit if he didnt want to kill her?? Doesn't make sense at all. Lol

This movie paved the way for alot of modern pop culture references that you can't have not heard these songs unless you quite literally grew up in a Shack under a rock. And Ursula was probably in Kingdom Hearts, never played the games just know that them and Disney have been buddies for well over a decade at this point

About Mermaids having children (since I haven't seen anyone else commenting on it). I'm of two minds: they are like fish and have eggs in big batches, which explains why she has so many sisters yet they all seem similar ages (except that there's one specific "oldest sister" who is Triton's heir, so that theory doesn't quite work). Also, having gills explains why the mermaids don't have to go to the surface all the time for air. 🤷 But my other theory is that they are like dolphins, so mammals who swim. And if you want to look up how dolphins mate and have children you can do that on your own time. 😆👍

Ursula is my second favourite Disney villain now, but that fight in the end of the film absolutely terrified me as a child!😱
