Nice to see someone reviewing this movie. Saw it a couple weeks ago and I loved it. Kinda surprised to see it going under the radar as much as it has. Very atmospheric and unnerving. I very much enjoyed the slow pace and the fact that it didn't rely on the supernatural elements. Very well directed. Gave me a feel similar to Hereditary, Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Shining. One of my favorites of the year for sure. Also great performances all around.

Hi Clarisse, great review - I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've not yet seen this film, but I will be going at the weekend. I have, however, read the book and like you, Gothic tales are right up my gaslit alley. I have been pondering this phenomenon, too. A huge contributing factor is the way in which we consume media; it tends to be frenetic and fleeting, to match the pace of life. Indeed, some mainstream films are made to be enjoyed and then forgotten about almost immediately. With Gothic stories you need to luxuriate in them; let them form around you like an oppressive fog. They do not rely solely upon the immediate rewards of jump scares, or flashes of repulsion upon seeing graphic violence. (I'm not denigrating these films, merely saying that they are more common, and more popular.) I can't comment on mainstream horrors as I'm too anxious to watch them, but I love that Gothic stories are so subtle, and yet so unafraid to revel in their tropes. I have noticed that audiences also seem to struggle with this aspect. I read a lot of reviews of CP which criticise the film for being predictable and overplayed, which completely MISSES THE POINT. Crimson Peak is DELECTABLE. Jessica Chastain is having the time of her life and I love it. The second she utters the words, 'My mother...' a tingle of pure joy ran through me. I knew what I was in for and I was SO ready. I have so much more to say, but I'll leave it there!

I liked this film but didn't love it. Can't put my figure on it. I think mostly I just struggled to engage with any of the characters even though the cast were all very good. I think it was trying a bit too hard to be glum and could have used a bit more light with the dark. Also the voice over didn't really work for me. For all the good things I think the director has done better films.

I wasn't a big fan either, and I normally like his films. I can see what Clarisse means about it being misunderstand though.
