The Lonely Blind Elephant After Lost Her Friend - ElephantNews

It is very hard for Jokia to believe that her best friend, Mae Perm, is gone from her life. After Mae Perm passed away we brought Jokia to walk out from the enclosure because we don't want her to be too stressed inside her shelter . The first steps beyond her door, she rushed to find her friend , and called every minute, searching her trunk to call Mae Perm. She expected as every time prior that when she spoke her low rumble to call Mae Perm, that she will come to hug and comfort her, as every time before ! But now there is only emptiness and no familiar word. I can feel her emptiness. I can see her tears run down with fear and confusion . My heart is so hurt and devastated with deep pain for my girl lost and for the beautiful one left behind, darkness surround. While Mae Perm was here she was the light behind Jokia's eyes, and the will to live. Since Mae Perm passed away, Jokia spends her time looking for the place, the smells, the memories where they walked together all around where they both used to stay together. She sniffs everywhere, and when she finds where Mae Perm has peed, she stops for a long time to observe and then she displays her sorrow and clearly mourns. I Hope time can help to heal her. Currently she spends her days with Navaan and his family but she is uneasy..Yai Bua and the other elder nannies didn't work out..Please pray for Jokia to find a new precious caring friend, someone who can be her eyes and the light for her. Elephants have an extensive and deep grieving process. They will even go to where their dead loved ones are and pet their bones. They are such beautiful and emotionally intelligent beings.

Navann's family took her in Navann's mom, Sri Prae, is her best friend now. Jokia is doing much better.

This is an elephant thing, meaning, this is not something a human can do or assign an ele to do. An elephant must step forward to stand in the gap for Jokia, to step into Mae Perm 's place. No human can make this happen. We must PRAY that an elephant will step forward to help Jokia. This is what is needed. --Hugs to you all!

So profound! But I think it will happen in due time. Elephants are so capable of a special empathy on a level many humans are not. Not to say humans don't have empathy or this rescue wouldn't exist. But I think it's on a whole level that's unique to them. I cried...

@Crystal Hoskins Yes. I agree with you. And we got complete proof in this video that elephants cry out of sadness just like we do. And they're even more empathetic than us because they have a pure simplicity combined with that empathy that only pure spirited empathetic humans have, which isn't the higher percentage of us. But most of these sanctuary rescue workers do have that pure empathy, they don't get paid for this, they do it because they care. If only a larger percentage of the human race was like this

Dear ENP, We Love you all. We will be praying for Jokia and that an elephant will step up to help her. BUT PLEASE: Tell the mahout that he MUST be her eyes and make sure she doesn't run into things, that he MUST be proactive to look out for her so she doesn't fall off a high place or get hurt!! It is VERY grieving that he let her run into that post, and it hurts her confidence every time that happens. That will only make her more fearful of dangers. He MUST be careful with her. She will never get her eyesight back, but elephants are good at helping out blind and disabled ones. ENP has shared plenty of anecdotes showing that over the years. I never get tired of hearing another story about Faa Mai leading an elderly newcomer to ENP back to the shelter when she is not sure which way to go. :-)

People, it doesn't matter what kind of animal. When their best friend dies, you MUST let them smell, touch, and see the friend after death. These are the ways the death can be explained to an animal - through the sensory experience. Smell in particular. Without it, they will feel abandoned & have no idea what happened. If god forbid I die before my dogs, I've instructed people to allow them to smell me. They will understand what happened. This is SO important.
