If you go in with low expectations after hearing about how shit this episode was, you'll have a good time. Easily, even. The dragons blowing the fuck out of the undead is utterly nuts as a visual and super satisfying. But most went in with HIGH expecatations, because they'd been building to this for years, and the payoff felt a little... small.

Without plot armor, he would have died with all the Dothraki, because it's fucking stupid to ride head-on into such a huge army of undead with your entire cavalry. Or if not then, he would have died several more times afterwards. Being stabbed by swords several times would have quickly incapacitated and ultimately killed him. And above all, a stab in the chest with a sword would have killed him almost instantly and he would never have been able to defend Daenerys for as long as he did.

I'm so happy Sam survives this War. But I dont think it was plot armor. I think alot of people were specifically looking out for Sam because they owed him. Ed and Sam got very close in friendship. They grew alot together through thier service at the Wall. Ed saw Sam in trouble and owed him that friendship protection. Not to mention the brotherhood protection from other men of the Nights Watch. Jorah saves him too at one point because Jorah owes Sam his life. It makes sense that Sam would have a couple "9 lives" scenes in this Battle given how many people were watching his back.

I think some important context that they have that the original viewers of GOT did not have, is that the dagger was just a dagger for us. It wasn't until HOTD that they retconned the whole prophecy relating to the dagger. So seeing them say that Arya was going to kill the Night King cause she has the dagger is very surprising to me. I don't think anyone really thought it would be her so it was super surprising for us and not in a good way. Her jumping out of literally nowhere to kill the Night King is still one of the dumbest twists of all time, not just in this show.

The physics are what didn’t make sense to people. A non-Jon Stark killing the Night King makes sense because that’s their ancestral home and where winter falls. Storytelling-wise, it makes sense because Bran and Jon have both been enemies of the Night King, but it would be nigh impossible for Jon to defeat the Night King in hand to hand combat and also would’ve been the most obvious, tropey fantasy standoff, the likes of which GoT has been rejecting since the beginning. Arya defeating the Night King does a lot of things. It shows how the Starks have turned the tables since season one, since Bran is now using what may be foresight and an assassin with a dagger to take out an otherworldly threat instead of being a helpless boy threatened by one. It also gives Arya’s training overseas a greater significance than vengeance. It also drives home that it takes a team effort to defeat the Night King instead of just leaving it to an archetypal hero. It played out in a terrible way, though, because the White Walkers were never utilized in combat and the angles make it impossible to know how Arya got anywhere near the Night King. Also the wisp of White Walker hair blowing in the wind is so cringily silly, like something out of Scooby Doo.
@ryansapia5671
@ryansapia5671 18 сағат бұрын
@@lartisteautravail I HATED what they did with Arya in the show. Her training is super rushed because they were desperate to end the show as quickly as possible and were tired of making the show (D&D said this in interviews at the time). What we see is her getting the shit beat out of her by the Waif non-stop, she seems to finally win against her in combat one time, and then the next time we see her she's able to kill the Waif while in the dark after being stabbed half a dozen times. It's beyond idiotic. Then she just reappears in Westeros and is like a super stealth assassin with every power under the sun. We saw none of these skills develop. As soon as they diverged from the books with her story, it makes absolutely no sense and becomes the worst plot lines in the whole show in my opinion (at least Dorne was only one season before they decided they fucked up too badly and just dropped it from the show). I loved Arya's storyline in the earlier season, but as soon as she gets to Bravos it starts to go off the rails and by the end of season 6 I'm left rolling my eyes every time she's on screen. All this to say, sure I'm fine with her killing the Night King in theory, but it makes no sense in the context of the show, even setting aside the physics of her physically doing it. She should not be able to kill him, because she shouldn't have the skills to kill him. This honestly annoys me more than her jumping 50 feet off of the walls of Winterfell screaming as she tries to stealth kill the Nigh King.

It felt strange because characters were dying for lesser reasons earlier in the series than those seen in the "End of the World" fight. I believe that witnessing more character deaths would have added greater significance to that battle. Removing characters from the equation and increasing the difficulty of the dynamics is one of the strongest aspects of the show.

I have a problem with this comment. Firstly catapults are siege weapons and it doesn’t make any sense for a fortress to have them in the first place, outside or inside the walls. Secondly it is common for the foot soldiers to be outside the walls in case of a battle (not a siege) to actually be able to fight instead of waiting to be boxed in (only a fraction would fit on the walls to do any damage). Thirdly if you have a cavalry but don’t charge them, what is their use? Other than that, horrendously stupid episode of course and no battle tactics at all. Cavalry should’ve been far away to flank when the battle is brewing. Dragons should have been protecting the walls and the troops constantly, not randomly attacking etc.

this episode is great while watching. Almost everything makes sense, from the darkness, which makes the fights realistic, to the failed plans and improvisation, that's how battles really are. A simplest thing can change the outcome. The music crescendo at the end leaves you speechless and the anticipation of the outcome makes you stare directly to the screen without moving. The problems appear afterwards. Why didn't X do that and Y didn't do that? Jon knew the power of the Night King, there should've been barrels of oil to instantly burn all the fallen corpses. He should've made the people digging trenches out of Winterfell since Season 7, the women and children should've been evacuated... What was Bran's meaning in all of this? (or three eyed raven. He was slayed already by the Night King in Season 6, no way he would wait for him - again - patiently.) There was no actual plan to protect the most valuable person other than some mid soldiers (Theon isn't a great warrior and never was, even though his character arc is great and one of the best in TV history). Why couldn't something as epic as this be worked out through more episodes? The build up was for whole 7 years and 7 seasons. Winterfell crew fleeing south and facing the insanely large WW army later again. Even Bran taking the power from the Night King... The answers on Martins vision of this will only follow in the book version (once or IF the last 2 volumes ever come out).

A few episodes ago Arya sneaked up on Jon in the Godswood the exact same way which explains how she was able to get there without the white walkers noticing while Jon was pinned down by the dragon In Branns vision in the cave the children created the Night King by plunging an obsidian dagger into his stomach, it took the same thing to kill him. Arya previously did the same move when training with Brienne in season 7 and she was able to do it here because NK had 1 hand on her throat and the other grabbing her wrist that originally had the dagger. If we assume Brann has seen visions of the future and knows roughly what will happen he gave Arya the dagger she used to kill NK and sat in the perfect spot at an angle to allow Arya to sneak in for the kill.

I think part of the reason we got no backstory for the NK, White Walkers, and Army of the Dead is because, as this season was airing, HBO/GRRM were working on an Age of Heroes/Original Long Night series. I loved how Arya killed the Night King. “How did she get past the white walkers?” Because it’s her home for one and she definitely knows how to sneak around. 2, she’s super sneaky and they showed that many times throughout the series with people saying “How’d you sneak up on me?” And 3, the hand switch of the knife was epic, that’s like her signature move and it faked us all out. We saw her flying in and were pumped, then the king flexed and we were like NOOO!! Then the drop with the shot of the king’s eye noticing it too late…perfect! I like thinking about how epic it was when the Dothraki got their swords lit, and how jacked it got them. Imagine you’re a blood rider already jacked for battle and then you get a flaming sword!! The director/writers did them dirty having them get wiped out so easily. That was super lame. Jon jumping out to get cooked, lame. Them barely using the catapults, lame. Ghost is absolutely misused, lame. They should’ve definitely had a couple of the wight generals in the battle and have them killed by key characters. Definitely should’ve had a lot more fire at the ready too.

Do you know how to use siege equipment defensively? 3) Keep the infantry BEHIND the pikes so they serve as the first line of defense and the dead cannot charge you head on (Not saying on top of the walls because they might have expected the dragon to break the walls as it was the strategy when powder was introduced) 4) Don't YOLO your entire light infantry to charge to an enemy you cannot even see where they are and how many they are 5) Dragons should have been flying in circles spitting fire every certain time creating breathing room for the infantry bellow and they would have never lost sight of the battle 6) You have 2 dragons against 1, it might have been a good idea to reinforce their claws with dragonglass so they could kill the night kings dragon more easily (Or they already saw the scorpion in use on 7x4 so someone could have at least tried to make the design to snipe the undead dragon as it was clearly established that the dragon glass is instakill) 7) Don't send the non-fighters to a crypt against the one dude that can resurrect the dead, instead fortify the grand hall and keep them there (They might still die but at least is a more reasonable plan) 8)...???? 9) Profit

I think something that could have been really cool to see in this episode-is since the dead in the crypts can come to “life”, seeing white walker Lyanna and Ned.

So, Dany's loss counter: Viserion, her claim to the throne, Jorah. So far, she's only lost since entering her promised land of Westeros. Let's see if that's all there is to it^^

Well she didn’t loss her claim to the throne she still has a claim
@TheYksuH
@TheYksuH 20 сағат бұрын
No, she hasn't. Jon is Rhaegar's legitimate son. Rhaegar was the crown prince and so Jon has the right to the throne. Even Dany knows that, because that's how her own understanding of dynasty works.

@@TheYksuH Rhaegar was disinherited by the mad king (and ALL his offspring as well) and Viserys was named heir who in turn named Dany his heir… Disinherited means no claim anymore So were do we go from here?
@TheYksuH
@TheYksuH 18 сағат бұрын
@@cambelloroxy9420 If Viserys was disinherited, he is welcome to appoint Dany as his successor, but it doesn't matter because he was disinherited and no longer has the right to do so. But Dany believes that only a Targaryen can rule the world and she thought she was the last Targaryen. But she is not, because through Jon there is someone living who is the rightful son of the heir to the throne. So either none of them have a claim, or if they do, it's Jon because he's the heir to the throne bloodline. That's how every monarchy in the world works.

There are a lot of bad things about this...but i am always gonna defent Aria killing the Night King. The whole point of the story is that a profecy is not realiable. Season one you see the Stalion that Will mount the world profecy that never happens. The Prince that was promised is the same. Also, Aria had 3 years of ninja training, so yes, she can run around them stealthily. The point of her meeting Brianne is that she learns that dagger move when she trains with her.

I never thought that Theon's death would hurt me so much, but it hurt me as much as Vicerion's, I cried a lot XD It was very distressing. Excellent silence towards the end, they took away every detail of the chapter. nice

You guys forgot that Arya sneaks up on EVERYONE. That bedroom door was closed when she snuck up on Sansa. Her reunion with John at the Godswood he asked her, “ how did you sneak up on me”. You can see when she slips by the white walkers his the white walkers hair move as if there was a breeze.

Night king is thousands of years old, the fact that we never saw him showcase any fighting skill hurts me. we talk about jamie, arhtur dayne, barristan selmy ect.... being highly skilled fighters it wouldve been fun to see the night king show something.

You can see when Jon is hiding the Ice (blue fire) and Fire (actual fire) showing he represents Ice and Fire the literal name of the saga A song of Ice and Fire....yet it was Arya that killed the night king! I was amazed when i first watched way back when but as ive come to rewatch it really is a kick in the nuts!!

Even though Jon never got his Night King showdown... He was still the reason he fell. He basically rallied people together against a common cause like no one else could. People would still be playing their own games if it wasn't him.

@studiogek Jon Killing Night King would have been obvious so they didn’t go that way also Arya sneaking upon Night king was foreshadowed when she sneak up on Jon in the 8x01 episode. Don't worry Jon killing big character on the show is not yet over😂

It is obvious that Arya got past the White Walkers because she climbed the walls which have always been shown to overlook the GodsWood. When Dany first appeared in Winterfell, it showed Arya climbing those very walls. First time i watched it, I found it pretty obvious that Arya pulled some Assassin's Creed shit on The Night King

I think what makes me most mad about this episode is in HOTD they are hyping up the “song of ice and fire” and the prince or princess that was promised

Exactly. This ending didn't just ruin the show, it ruined the entire history of lore and prequels. Everything that ever happened lead us to this.

The director for this episode also directed some of HOTD season 1 which you can clearly tell, or rather cant. You woulda thought he learned about lighting after the complaints about this episode but nope. (The HOTD episode I'm referring to is the one where Aemond gets Vhagar if it wasn't obvious enough)

That HotD episode is so badly lit. It seems that they shot the scenes by the sea during the day and to make it look like night they had to basically make the whole image dark.

Yeah they did a terrible job with the lighting in that episode. Seems pretty elementary film schooling to make your scene visible but what do we know.

That's the same guy? Holly shit the night scene in HOTD was so awful. We could not see Rhaenyra and Daemon at all when they were doing it. What is weird is that it was revealed that they shot those scenes during the day and darken them after! Hell I have seen 70s/80s movies shot at night(some parts of Superman, Annie, etc...) and you could see everything

The author George R.R. Martin has mentioned multiple times that the ending would be Bitter Sweet, so I would assume he has a clear ending in mind, but getting there with the massive amount of characters and storylines he built requires time to develop and tie into the overall premise. The story litteral has hundreds if not thousands of on stage and off-stage characters with each carrying a piece of the puzzle. Some of the puzzle pieces may seem insignificant and small at certain places in the timeline but actually are extremely important later in the story. Therefore, a story such as this requires the needed time for those pieces to take shape. The show had done a relatively good job of adaptation of his story when they were allowing the time to develop those pieces. As George said himself once one of those pieces of the puzzle become altered or is missing it becomes like a butterfly effect that creates problems later in the timeline; which presents noticable fallacies that defy logic. The books have a vast amount detail and rich world building that cannot be captured in a condensed way these later seasons have done. The beauty of this epic tale is in the conflict within each characters motives and their decision making. The biggest complaint I have heard about this episode is with Brans character. We were shown that Bran has the ability to skin change and Warg into any creature and access the Weirwood network to view various timelines of past and present locations simultaneously. These are the type of powers no one in this world possess. Powers that a character like Tyrion would notice as beyond valuable to tap into. So in the past episode we saw Tyrion attenpt to do just that. We saw him sttempt to pick his brain and get s grip of what he is capable of. We have been taught that Tyrions character has used knowledge as a weapon and he must have seen Bran as the ultimate weapon. So if you plant that seed and you never return to see what if any resulted from it then it wastes Brans storyline into being pointless. If you are facing a massive threat like Others (Wight Walkers) and simultaneously a character like Bran who was identified by the Three-Eye Raven as his replacement and the ideal candidate to protect the Weirwood net and combat this threat to it and the world then you would think he would not just sit there helpless as bait. You would think Tyrion with his big brain could have realized a better use of this ultimate weapon other than warging into a bunch of ravens to alert the nightking of his whereabouts. Nonetheless, i urge all of those who have seen the show to read the books. The audiobook versions are quite good as well. It really illustrates the genius of this story

Easy how Arya got past the undead. She knew that Bran had said the NK would come for him, so she went and hid in the courtyard by the wall. She came from above him, so she was up on a wall, and jumped down.

I loved that Arya killed him, and the way she did it. It all makes so much sense to me, due to her training, even blind. That doesn't take away Jon's job uniting everyone for this, nor Daenerys' and her army and dragons contribution.
