Very inspired and relaxing Berlin School style !!! I love your big sound production of newest tracks, Is do due the Zoom R24 ? I'm looking for upgrade my recording system (audio card) ... Do you recommended the Zoom model R ? What Linux distro are you use ? Cheers !
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
I have the R16 and a R24(it just has an added sample section, that I've never tried), but I bought them originally because I was looking for multi-track recording. The Zoom's won out over Tascam simply because someone on Amazon was selling the R16 for 199$ and the R24 for 299$. I got both for the price of the R24 and they connect for 16 track multi-track recording over a USB cable to sync them. I have been happy with both so far, I just wanted to be able to record stuff separately so I could remix things on a case by case basis for more control. Or if one instrument sounds dumb but the rest are great you can take it out without any trouble and keep the rest. The big sound is 30% effects pedals(even just a small bit of reverb on an instrument widens the sound up), 30% mild tape compression via a DAW and plugin( the noise floor and hiss is added in after the fact to make it feel more analog, the digital recorders are very pristine and I like to junk it up a bit), and 40% mild use of compressors and a final limiter( all the tracks are run through a compressor to "glue" them together and the track will bounce around the -12db up to -6 or -3db for drum peaks, where as the un compressed tracks hover around -24db(most instruments) through -12db(for the peak drum volume), with a limiter at the end so nothing spikes over -0.1db) I'm currently on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS(long term service), it's the only Linux distro(well I like most of the Debian linux distro's) that I have had an excellent time dealing with as it's always worked for me.

I too love and use the Zoom R24. I was thinking about getting another and pairing them up like you're doing. That would provide enough inputs that I could sell the Mackie and Yamaha mixers all together. I usually use the MX-1 with effects going through it, and then plug the drum machine on its' own. Anyway, great video and thanks for sharing the ideas. I love the way the monologue pans between the ears on this piece. Keep up the great work. Sam.

The LFO was changing the wave shape back and forth...maybe my favourite part of the Monologue actually. I like when the sounds wander a little.
@ShimanskiBeats7 жыл бұрын
yes, the wandering sound is nice. I loved the wave-shaping of the Minilogue, but unfortunately you could not modulate the wave shape separately for each oscillator.

Nice sequence. The monologue has a wonderful metallic/modular tone to it. I deffinitely need to check this baby out.
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
It feels like a Monotribe but with all the options thrown in. It can do some really aggressive sounds or soft tones. I think you can feed it back into itself to make a feedback loop too. It has some features I haven't even messed with yet, pretty sure you can record knob motions even. It's first key is E though, something that took some getting used to.
@christophervan96347 жыл бұрын
record knob motions even. - you can do this, but I can't get the feedback trick to work at all.
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
Depending on what wave form types you are using, it may be pretty subtle depending where all the knobs are set at. It fattens the sound up , but if you start getting some resonance going and maybe ring modulation at the same time it starts to give pleasant feedback when it's looped into itself. I just use a short mono cable from the mono out, to the external in, and then use the headphone jack out as the output.
@christophervan96347 жыл бұрын
Oh, I know how to do it, but when ever I try it just gives me a crappy rumble sound, nothing pleasing to the ear.

Sleep is the one thing I look forward to most during the day at my age.That cat nap at 2:30 -3:00 is the best.The monologue is a wonderful instrument,I prefer mono synth as they leave space in between the tones and timbres.You can imply a tone,then let the listeners imagination fill in the rest.the ms-20 mini is cool in a romantic throwback way,but this is more practical ,but that's just me.maybe I'm just implied and you are just conversing with yourself?
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
Monologue is just "different" than the MS-20, I still like both. The dual filter on MS-20 is really fun, but I hear what you are saying with how they leave space between the notes, I turned a poly patch to a unison one last night on a JP-08 because it seemed to add more oomph to the sound even though it was getting cut each time a new note sounded. The oscilloscope on the Monologue is just to fun as well when making new sounds with it. The price is right too.
@1942manfred7 жыл бұрын
I agree,Polyphonics are nice but I use them sparingly especially the hard edge of the FM synths...a piece of music is like outerspace,our eyes are drawn to the points of light that are our planets and Suns but it is the blackness of the abyss that make those bodies that much more brilliant.monophonics keep that area or space between the moving tonal points that allow them to breath.ive become super fond of the Volca bass!it does a lot of what I used the monologue for.As I get older I become attracted to minimalist style,like electronic haikus or something like that,lol.i really enjoy your processes,you look to have fun!

One of the best sounds I’ve heard from a Monologue. I’ll be hooking up mine to my Zoom Ms70 cdr to see if I can coax out something similar. Any further tips?
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
It should be easy with the monologue, this a very simple patch. I wanna say it was just a saw with a triangle(one or two octaves lower), then I had the LFO adjusting the waves. The delay really helps set stuff off because the waveforms are changing even if the sequence isn't. The saw wave also doesn't really come in until the cutoff knob starts to get around the 11 o'clock position because it is so much higher up than what the triangle wave is set at. It sort of helps separate the two oscillators making it seem like there is more going on.

very smooth ... do you use overdub or delay is doing all the notes
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
It's the ping-pong delay, you get about three echos that bounce left and right in time with the BPM for each note.

Figured I ask. I have a Korg Monologue aswell, I'm learning and have been getting good with it lately. However, How do I go about recording it onto my PC? I use ubuntu.
@MetatronsCube236 жыл бұрын
There are a few programs on Ubuntu that I'm familiar with, Audacity (www.audacityteam.org/), LMMS (A DAW on linux that has worked for me en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMMS), and QjackCtl (qjackctl.sourceforge.io/#Intro) which can route audio and midi in real time through your computer if needed. All of them can be installed from the repository or using the terminal and "sudo apt-get install audacity"(lmms, and qjackctl). Audacity is the easiest to start using and trying to do some recording. If you don't have an audio interface, you can try plugging the headphone out on the monologue to the "line in" on the back of your computer, then with Audacity open, you can select the line in as your audio source. If it all worked you should be able to do basic recording this way. If your computer doesn't have a line in you can try the mic in, but sometimes they are noisy. At some point if you get a USB audio interface(Focusrite Scarlett, or Presonus etc) with midi in/out, and two audio ins(L/R), you can use LMMS to play(via midi) and record your instrument(midi from your playing can be recorded and edited as well as audio at that point), or do multiple tracks easily.

I know the feeling. I got 3 kids, steady fulltime job, and almost no time to record stuff. I'm noodling a lot between cooking potatoes and eating soup so am getting somewhere. But still .... I hope to makea new video soon as well. And how is it going with the Vinyl project.
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
Every time a song comes out good it's been longer than what can fit, or is too short....the times for records are weird you have maybe 3 and a half minutes to 4 and a half for a 7" and then 11-15 min for a 12". I may just give in and throw a few random tracks together as long as they fit.

It's ping-pong delay that is beat matched to the BPM with really long delay times. As the patch changes its sounds like a few things playing at once.
@TheOfficialRemiMoore7 жыл бұрын
Nice tip. I am trying to decide between this and the bass station 2. Does anyone have any recommendations? Me first synth, produce mostly trip hop and trance type music. Wanting to move over to hardware. I like what I am hearing from the monologue but I think I would prefer a polyphonic keyboard more. The monologue is affordable for me, and lots of videos say its a good piece to start and integrates well with other other equipment later. What do you guys recommend?
@MetatronsCube237 жыл бұрын
The monologue is a good starter synth, of course it can't do chords but it is good for learning and does great bass or solo type sounds. It can be clean or dirty, it's well rounded. If you control and record via DAW you can just layer stuff too and get chords that way. Hell you can even make drum sample sounds with it and do a whole song with just a monologue. It's not a bad investment.
