Tang is my favorite of all the Chinese dynasties, it was just a truly magical and influential period of China. Japan got their kimonos, architecture, literature and basically most of their culture from Tang dynasty China. Chang'an was cosmopolitan with people from as far as middle east coming to trade or stay.

I like how the plot slowly unfolds, and it's a pretty rewarding feeling when you figure something out. Also, when you rewatch the previous episodes, you actually can find a lot of hints or little details that weren't obvious in the first viewing. My friend don't like it because the story is too complicated, but I enjoy it very much. I totally agree the story could be told in a way with a lots of cliff hangers like 24 the US series, and attract wider audience. Maybe this is why people are not eager to find out what happen next. The show is made for binge watching, so I suggest wait for all the episode to come out, and binge it in a long weekend.

Oh wow, this was so helpful and enlightening. Thank you! And yes, it all feels very distant. The most intriguing part of the show is watching the hours tick pass. I honestly don't know what anyone could do to make the story touch the heart more. Maybe if they revealed more about our protags and villains up front rather than keeping us in the dark ab out so much of the backstory. But am not sure.

Totally agreed with you on the emotional attention bit up until xiao yi.... that really tore my heart out. The acting is amazing and so is the cinematography. There's so much hinted at behind the characters, just enough backstory given for the audience to imagine what could've made the characters the way they are. Lei Jia Yin really really carries the story here but the scriptwriting is really good too in that we learn so much about the character not just by the way he acts but by the way people treat him, and this is true for many of the other side characters too, albeit in less depth than as the main character. Really fascinating.

You are on point about the no emotional attachment to the characters! I think the plot did not allow for any character build up, not even Commander Zhang, as the events were happening too fast. I did feel a wrench on my heartstrings when Zhang had to betray his man and the guy gladly died for him. I think we have to just accept that not all stories can be everything to everyone. I am happy enough with the other superlatives of this drama :)!

As a man, I don't like dramas that focus on touching the heart, love or feelings. What I care about are historical accuracy, dialogue, logic, and action. So far, this is the only drama I've watched up to the many episodes that were released in a decade. The last time I watched this many episodes for a drama is when I was watching 大宅门 or 康熙大帝, which is like almost 20 years ago. Although the longest day in Chang'an isn't anything of that level, this is a drama which also attracts male audience. As for historical accuracy, the amount of details they researched into are still unbelievable, for a drama.

I think it'd be quite unrealistic to expect the research team to get small details like hairstyle down perfectly to the point that you could say that these were accurate hairstyles for this period of the Tang. Also, falling back on Japanese style is quite understandable. If you look at Tang dynasty art, culture, architecture it is very easy to notice the strong influence that Tang culture had on Japan.

I have to say that the scriptwriter(s) really did a wonderful job in further developing these characters. I read the original book to learn those contents that weren't filmed, and I just think, please forgive my possibly offensive words, the book does even worse in terms of character building. Actually, for me the book is readable but not necessarily so good, but thanks to all the staff behind the show, especially scriptwriters, designers and cameramen, this drama becomes a visual masterpiece indeed.

I gotta watch this. The Tang dynasty is probably my most favorite dynasty. I really love how progressive it was and really brings up a lot of what if questions. But Japan did copy a lot from or inspired by China? Architecture, arms and armor, style of government, dress, etc. I'm personally one of the people who think Japan preserved a lot of aspects of the Tang dynasty, while Chinese culture changed in later dynasties. The thing about Japan is that it copies but then it eventually makes whatever they copied their own and develop it from there.

Me too! Yeah, they probably look towards Japan because of this and to make things look more familiar and for creative liberties or convenience. They likely did do their research and with the women's outfits, for example, they probably found it more visually appealing to use a variety of Tang outfits than focusing on specific ones.

There's never a dynasty before or after that was able to surpass what Tang achieved. At the time, Japan had always sent ambassadors over to ancient china to learn until Tang eventually goes downhill. That's why ancient japan's cultural elements are much similar to tang than any other dynasties, because tang was the last they learn from, the best in their point of view.

Yes, the plot is too condensed that's why there's less focus on character development. But I like the lead character a lot, his personality is manly, he's brash, mature and also has a sense of humor. There's this small scene where he made a pass on that female officer who dragged him out of prison in the beginning, she looked pretty offended but also flattered in a bewildered sort of way. For a brief moment there was this sexual tension between the two. You don't get to see that kind of interaction in Chinese productions. I hope for more. I also like the courtesan. Overall, characters act like adults, not 21st century flower idols being pasted into an ancient setting.

@AvenueX, I would like to know your final review on this. I finished this and my points are * 48 episodes are quite draggy and there are too many boring fillers as the episodes move further. I assumed they need to make it 48 episodes as a reflection of 12×4. I was anticipating something more from the minor characters but nothing was done about it. * The ending is quite predictable and became less exciting as the mystery was solved. I was hoping Tanqi will follow Zhangxiaojing in the end but she chose to guard Yangyihuan instead. I was anticipating a much bigger force whom mastermind such chaos but it turns out disappointingly. There are many parts which were not well reasoned and viewers are expected to assume the silliest reasoning for it. Many questions unanswered. Xubin reasoning is not valid enough for me. * Cinematography is quite good. All seems real enough. I like the musics and settings. * Overall, I think they started quite well and are able to hold viewers' attention for quite some time. It just gets tired and draggy when it started to go 25th maybe and above. * As someone who also like history, I am not happy with this drama as well. So, 'its best to view it as merely entertainment purpose.

Basically, it was set in a day in Chang'an, and the main characters were all historical figures. It all began with Wolven squad coming into Chang'an who were trying to destroy the city because Tang refused to help the Turks to fight the Arabians who invaded the Turk land. The Tang government was monitoring the Turks and found the wolven squad were missing, so they set up a new bureau called, Jing'an bureau (social police department), to help investigate and protect Chang'an from vile schemes. Initially, the Jing'an bureau used Cui Liulang as an agent to spy on Wolven Squad, but he was killed because, Li Bi, the head of the bureau, ordered the removal of the camels before their ambush. The wolven squad couldn't hear the bells tied on the camel's neck, so they found out they were betrayed by Cui and killed him. Li Bi had no choice but to use a prisoner under the sentence of death, Zhang Xiaojing, to help him catch the wolven squad. So it all began from there. The reason Zhang Xiaojing was sentenced to death was that he killed his superior for revenging his best friend's death, which was indirectly caused by his superior. According to Tang dynasty law, killing one's superior or parents would result in in capital punishment. Also, there was the court intrigue. Historically, the Right Prime Minister, Li Linfu, ousted the Crown Prince, Li Heng, from the power circle. That was also the case in the drama. Li Linfu always tried to blame Jing'an bureau's failure to stop the Wolven Squad from killing innocent people on the Crown Prince, Li Heng, because the Jing'an bureau was administered by the prince. Meanwhile, the emperor was too captivated by a concubine and wants to relinquish his power to a trusted individual; therefore, he Right Prime Minister was vying for that power with the Crown Prince. There were many differences between this drama and the novel, especially for the pace of events. In the novel, Zhang never had time to rest; he was constantly on the move, and everyone such as Lin Linfu, the 8th prince, Li Bi, Yao Runeng, the hooligans, and many others, were all trying to stop him. So he went through one obstacle after another, and in the process, he was wounded and fainted many times. The director changed the plots and decided to slow down the pace, but he introduced many other elements into the drama, for example, he let Zhang Xiaojing ate the historical food that was actually served during the Tang dynasty, and he also kept showing the sceneries of the lantern festival and performances, to give the audiences an idea what Tang dynasty was really like.

Sui clothing is very close to Tang, and in fact that period in general is very different from the Han as what you would imagine. After all after the Jin Dynasty got messed up by the steppe nomads, China has entered a period of almost four hundreds of cultural and racial interactions with people from the steppe, from middle Asia, this almost completely changed Clothing, and what Tang had also had strong influence on later Song, Ming dynasties.

When you mention Tribes & Emperor I immediately understand what you mean although I haven't watch Longest Day in Chang'An. Something that should be 3 minutes long gets stretched into hours! Cinematography will be super good for sure, but pacing will be slow. When something is slow, usually it will be very boring. So I just checked out the first few episodes now, and it is exactly like what I thought. It's not that boring actually, but it is very slow. It isn't easy to sit through the whole thing. There isn't much story telling to it. If they're starting out the story with lots of explanations, then the conversations need to be fast and interesting. At a very maximum of 3 minutes, if the talkings are boring then it is time to fast forward. I will fast forward until something interesting comes up. What I mean by "something interesting" is, not words (not interesting words or interesting scriptings), but interesting "action". By the point people are skimming, nobody will have the ability to know or even care what the characters are saying anymore, they can only see "actions" or "facial expressions" that are easy signals to tell that "interesting" things are happening through the use of the eyes. The only time they will stop skimming is when that interesting action happen. Fighting scenes today are not interesting actions, unless they can at least pull Wu Jing or Vincent Zhao's style (from TV dramas, not movie or film). I think it is such a big waste of beautiful cinematography because I'm skimming most of it away! They should've used an idol actor or actress. I didn't know this drama exist at all even though they used so much money on it, because there isn't any idol in it. I only know it now through you. I see what you mean, it's hard to fall in love with the characters. Acting, color, props, etc. everything is great! But still, the story piece, that's missing. The story is the reason why a drama should even exist and that part is missing. It's like a sleeping beauty, she's got everything but is she alive? Yeah she's not dead yet...but, it's not like she's alive either.

I'm a reader of the original story of untamed. To be honest, I’m disappointed. Not because of their recreation of the story, but for the cheap and funny production. But the longest day in Chang’an gives me a surprise. It is not perfect, but it a piece of work with respect to both the history and the audiences!

When I watched the drama, there's not much to complain. But it is really not tempting for me to watch it. I think maybe because the plot is layered too much to the point it is a bit messed up and draining to watch. So I can relate to you when you said that you didnt feel the urge to watch it. And also, while it is very thoroughly carefully done, sometimes there're plotholes that should not be there.

This TV Drama is by now most historical accuracy period drama in China.. Impressive.. I should say that most of period dramas in China are really poor producted with ridiculous costumes, armors or scenes and so on... But this drama is totally different. Highly recommanded to those who has intrest on real chinese culture.

It is AvenueX Zoroastrianism is a religion that people don't even recognize as being such a huge and powerful religion. Actually, a religion that was so stringent and actually had the burqua and influenced the burqua into Islam. The rules of Zoroastrianism was so stringent that when Islam showed up in the dominant area of Z, the majority of the peoples WiLLINGLY changed b/c Islam was easier to follow. However, there was a merging of cultures. ie...burqua. In areas. However, this is why Islam is culturally different for women in various areas---however, the foundation that Mohammed teaches is the same. Not the bullshit these jackass radicals are spewing.

that is because u didnt read the novel. Or else, u will understand it. Also, this drama had been cut so much from a 60 episode drama initially to a 26 episode drama, and now to a 40 episode drama due to the government scrutiny perhaps.

I'm not a fan of the Tang dynasty so I might not watch it unless I'm hooked on the plot and storytelling. On another topic Love and Destiny finally airs so I'm sure you'll do a review later but I just can't get myself into the story lol. It's not that their acting or cinematography sucks or anything like that I think the pairing is off for me. Maybe I'll give it time but I'm not impressed so far by their chemistry. Chang Chen looks too much like a 叔叔 or wise 师父 figure for me to buy the romance part lol.
