I thought about writing a long-winded personal message about how relatable and resonating the topics you brought up in this video were, but I'll settle and simply say thank you for making this kind of content. The backdrop of TF2 really adds a personal, cozy familiarity and gives a 14 year old, time-scaled perspective that very few people can share. Describing all the changes you've went through is helping me put my own life into context and that's an invaluable experience to me. So, thank you!

Once when I was 19 I completely randomly had this week where I just could not sleep at all. I'd never had sleep issues before, and I had no idea why it was happening, but I just got hard locked on 100% awake. After the second night where I maybe got just a couple of hours, I felt so bizarre, like drugged up on adrenaline, tired but also didn't really struggle focusing. I guess it was similar to the kind of altered/euphoric feeling you described after powering through the tiredness. I was going to uni and seeing friends and felt like I'd seen behind the curtain, or was outside the system or something, lol

About 3 years ago, I ended up not sleeping for around 5 total days. At the time I was in a hospital for appendix and bowel issues I was having. On the first day of admission, I went into surgery, and after the surgery they placed me into a room with total of 6 beds, and 5 of them were occupied by elderly men (perhaps in their 60s or so). And me being the one that needs complete and utter silence to fall asleep, I simply couldn't due to the extremely loud snoring they all would do. I'm not trying to overexaggerate it, but it truly sounded like some satanic ritual. Sleeping during the day wasn't plausible neither. Nurses would constantly come to change the iv bags, people would talk, come in and out of the room constantly. And top of it all, the pain was absolutely bat shit crazy. So much so that I couldn't do more than just lay in a vegetative state. The simplest of things as watching KZbin so the time would feel like it's going faster was an actual misery. 2 or 3 days in without any sleep, I started hallucinating. And finally after 5 days they finally put me to a different room. It was almost pure silence, and it didn't take me long to fall into a nap which although lasted only 30 minutes, during that nap I experienced the most realistic lucid dream I have ever had by far.

everyday is the longest day one of my family members who works as a therapist in the north of canada told me that theres a couple points in your life where your memories kind of get dumped, to make room for new stuff, like what you said. she said the first major occurence is usually around 14 years old, i thought it was interesting and the opening bit of this video reminded me of that cool tidbit, although i still dont know if its true, but i have no reason to doubt it.

I think when you stay up for a really long time you get a cool sense of how time passes, like when you just go to sleep at a set time every day you never really get a sense of how long it actually takes for night to go by when you stay up for 24 hours it's like "cool, I've seen an entire day and night, feels interesting"

the gameplay is so frantic, it really suits the story you are telling in the video. something about the map choices is greatly good aswell. not sure why. the transition to clip to clip feels appropriate.

One of the things regarding the sleep deprivation is that your brain with start shutting off the not immediately necessary to survival parts of the brain, one of the first things to go is the default mode network which is the part of your brain that focused into examining what your doing and in general being self aware, and a few other things like your capacity to think ahead and and consider the past, while really bad for complex decision making it does make you more effective at experiencing the now and being aware of your immediate situation. The bad part is your brain is slowly shutting off to stay alive and this can result in very bad long term brain problems if repeatedly done

I enjoyed your tiger hypothetical for it, but I understand that feeling you described about how your 'spare battery' kicks in and how that affects your experiencing things. The longest days for me (like the really long ones) feel like im tuning in to the present in a way I generally dont, and that's welcome when it comes around. It's useful for when you need to get through hard or painful things, but I can appreciate it as a general experience. Thank you for sharing those stories about your move and such, I like the off-the-cuff format. The music is wonderful btw, I have no clue what you're on about.

I remember the first time I was up for 24 hours was a few months ago in the summer, I was home alone for the weekend and I couldn't sleep because I was scared or stressed about something, can't remember what, probably some paranoid delusion since I've been getting those a lot more the past few months. Anyways it was at 3 or 4 that I was like "hey, I gotta walk my dogs in two hours or so anyways might as well stay up as long as I can" so I got up, went to my computer and played hotline miami 2 for a bit since I was playing through that at the time and I didn't go to sleep until 9 or 10 am. But yeah that thing you mentioned about the sleepless state is true, its such a weird feeling that is completely different than what you normally experience, wouldn't say its pleasant, but its definitely something.

I just had my longest day. I spent the night listening to dissonant death metal (more specifically the band Portal), which gave the entire experience a otherworld atmosphere. when my manic energy kicked in, I went for a walk at like 4 AM (sunrises are beautiful). Spent the rest of the day working on some side-projects, than ended up cooking some food with my roommates, after which I collapsed on the couch. good times :)

When you talked about the interesting "mechanics" of purposeful sleep deprivation, it is very similar to fasting as well, in my case for both food and water, but for most people it's just food. But nobody really talks about that for some reason.

Love these videos so much... don't do this BTW lmao. Humans are naturally tri/biphasic, staying up that long floods your brain with cortisol (an irritant), increases your risk of parkinsonism and anterograde amnesia. In simple terms, sleep is a save slot, and more spaced sleep makes it harder to learn and focus. Waking up and sleeping early is probably the very best thing you can do, but I know some people who are naturally polyphasic, had a teacher who slept 3 hours a day since childhood, imagine his productivity! You did inspire me to look that stuff up though, would love to learn more about sleep, as little as we know about it.

It’s truly odd noticing how even in our world which humans have molded to our liking, our primal instincts and functions still remain. They lie dormant in a society where they’re not needed, except when, just sometimes, they’re used in a new light. Nice relaxing video, thanks for it.
