The Longsword is an AWESOME Weapon! UPDATED Longsword Guide | Monster Hunter World 2023

Today I wanted to talk about the Longsword in Monster Hunter World. The Longsword is a long time fan favorite weapon of the series as well as being one of the easiest to use. Don't be fooled however as this weapon has a high level expertise only the BEST of Hunters can reach.

7:21 correction, it does not just do “two swipes”. How many slashes you do mid air is determined by spirit gauge level. Level zero gives 1 slash, level 1 and 2 gauge does 2 slashes, and level 3 gauge does 3 slashes mid air.

Note that y b y is a faster combo as it replaces a overhead slash with a stab, should be utilised as the standard combo

some addition -if you dodge an attack using iai spirit slash you wont consume a charge of the rim color -if you land the siai slash (the slowly increasing spirit gauge) and landing a fade slash right after that you have enough spirit meter for a full roundslash combo -the jumping spirit slash is tied to the rim color, no color you only slash once, white and yellow you do twice, and on red it do triple -the aerial draw spirit slash(sliding rt/r2), is doing the most mounting damage on the weapon, you can (most of the time) instantly mount the monster with just 1 sliding rt for the first mount -if you dont have any gauge, and you hit the sliding r2 it will give you enough gauge for roundslash, only work on empty/almost empty gauge tho -cant really confirm this but crit give you more spirit gauge

**ANTI-SPOILER Anyone picking up the game and looking for a challenge from the start avoid using the "Defender Armor & Weapon" set. It was added in to power you through the base game up to the expansion. Seen alot of people use this set and get turned off the game cause they think it's too easy Lmao trust me in it's natural form it is not.

As a player who played every MH from Portable to Rise but skipped World and Iceborne because, at the time, I lacked a PS4 or a PC good enough for it, I approve of these weapons and armour. I am also disgusted at how easy newcomers have it. No meat runs, no having to cook your own meat, a palico to draw agro, etc. 😂😂😂

The azure era longsword is probably the best option available from mid master rank basically until endgame. High raw, 30% affinity, and good sharpness, especially with handicraft. The demonlord arms from the fun fright fest give 3 points of handicraft if you don't have the decorations.

Great cap on the weapon. I would like to add the fact if you have red gauge and do a aerial + right trigger you hit 3 times in the air (white and yellow only does 2). You can also do this while slide + Y(or trilange) then right trigger. A good combo with clutch claw to face jump off and triple slash to face. Aerial attacks builds up score to mount the monster then when mount proc and if you have slinger ammo(any will do) you can wall bang the monster, do a full spirit roundslash + special sheath and when the monstie is about to wake up you can combo the special sheath into the spirit thrust. Tons of damage very effective, also likely get the monster enraged and you can the roar and do spirit roundslash to get back to red gauge.

You can interrupt foresight slash with special sheathe to correct for bad timing. You also need spirit gauge partially filled to be able to have i frames on foresight slash

Spirit helm breaker can also be redirected if your initial aim is off by holding the left stick in the direction you want the blade to face and pressing Y before you come down. You can do a 180 if you need to.

I mained CB for majority of base game but slowly adapted to LS for mobilty to have best of both worlds. I use CB when I wanna hit hard or play tanky and switch to LS when I want to push the limits how well I can read a monster. LS might seem easy but it's difficult to master as you must be in the monsters face and have no way to block other then parry to reduce damage. High risk high reward playstyle just sits right for me in this game.

Great video. LS is a great weapon. One of my favorites. No matter what naysayers say. The only real issue with it can be in group play. Because of its reach it is very easy to hit other players with it so watch your positioning and make sure they know you are playing LS so they can also be aware of that fact. A tip for Longsword, though this does hold true for any weapon. Learn to read and predict the monsters moves. This is useful for any weapon but even more so for weapons like LS or Lance that have a lot of counters. Or slow weapons like GS that have some setup to do max damage. You will benefit immensely, and not just in tems of not taking damage. LS for example, the Insight Slash will empty your inner spirit gauge if you miss with the perfect dodge but if you do it right and land the counter slash it will completely fill the gauge. Similarly, the Spirit Iai counter will drop one outer gauge when you use it, but if you get the counter timing perfect it won't cost anything. So it is even more satisfying to pull off since it rewards you for doing so and you can do more damage. One other thing to mention. In terms of dps for those who are new and trying to min/max as much as they can while progressing. Until you are able to hit 100% affinity (crit chance), affinity generally beats attack boost. Especially if you are engaging with weak points and weakness exploit, and even more so if you manage to have any critical boost. So if you hit attack boos 4, which gives 5% affinity and IF you have the extra Expert Jewels, they are generally the better option. But again that is IF you can do that. I fully acknowledge that while progressing you may not have access to enough of these things and just gotta work with what you have. And getting decorations/jewels is a major pain in the ass cus there is no real way to target farm them. At least not that I know of.

For clarification: forsight slash is the fastest way to round slash if performed perfectly(means u dodged through monster attack and landed a hit after), u can enter iai stance after foraight slash, iai slash works same as gs tackle, if performed perfectly it grants u dmg reduction and infinite poise for brief time. Iai spirit slash is the most powerfull move in the ls moveset when performed perfectly(care it has shorter invul window then forsight slash) aside of the fact that u will deal full red gauge iai spirit slash dmg it will not expend you gauge color allowing you to continue combo with red gauge helmbreaker. After helm breaker and round slash the only way to keep your combo pace is to enter iai stance.

Pretty sure ppl hate the ls cause it flinches ppl the most online so you’re forced to slot flinch free and if you forgot or just don’t, then yeah I feel for you. Yeah other weapons can flinch as well but it’s not even comparable to what the ls do. Personally I’m a solo player for the most part and only play online with friends and a controlled group so I never had any issues with the weapon. I think people that hate on the weapon never experienced accidentally (or not) getting launched off a cliff to a different area, hit a bunch of loading screens on the way back with wonky ass animations, only for the mon to die and you miss all the carves. Or getting bombarded by bullfangos while tryna carve only to get speared to the next area 💪

People hat this weapon also bc its way to op even more so in rise. Other Weapons get nothing but the strong LS gets more and more shit on top of all it had. It needs a heavy nerv in the next MonHunt game, the block needs to be gone and the dmg needs to be reduced if they want to balance the wepon again. But i would say that this is a problem for many weapons, Lance, Hammer, SNS and to an extend Gunlance as example need buffs or features that make them better.

@@BerosCerberus I get that ls seem like it’s getting heavy favouritism all the time but saying other weapons get nothing is absurd, especially in Rise. Rn it seems like every single weapon can counter, which used to be exclusive to ls, and mobility is no longer an issue due to wirebugs and skills so even a weapon like gs can compete with ls in terms of speed. If you wanna talk busted, I’d say gs is prolly the most op weapon in Rise but I don’t see ppl complaining about it. Same with cb/ig in 4U, cb in World, valor hbg in GU etc I’d argue the opposite and say ls is the most heavily criticized weapon mainly because ppl don’t like it and ppl love to jump on the bandwagon. Even if it’s op, its a pve game that can be played solo, especially Rise where the hunters are so busted. Been playing since FU while using all weapons so I’ve seen all types of op weapons but none got the hate that ls got

He said some things about the LS are simple and I don't disagree but the DB has way simpler mechanics. Like if you compare the LS and the DB's spirit Gauge and Demon Mode gauge respectively the Demon Mode gauge is way simpler, but similar in that it makes you stronger as you increase the gauge.

I just want to specifically point out, that the main reason why non-longsword users just don't like playing with longsword users (at least from my perspective) is mainly because it's the only weapon archetype in the entire game where every other melee weapon has to specifically use a decoration slot to be able to consistently function while within the reach of the longsword or suffer the infuriating consequences. A lance has never consistently stunlocked me via flinch. A greatsword has never consistently stunlocked me via flinch Dual blades has never consistently stunlocked me via flinch, etc. But by God, if we manage to wall splat something or the hammer manages to get a stun, and I have the bad luck of attacking the same part as the longsword user, you can bet your sweet ass my DPS during that damage phase is going to tank because I can't FUCKING ATTACK THE DAMN THING WITHOUT GREAT VALUE BRAND VERGIL CONSTANTLY STAGGERING ME

If you care so much about dps, slot in flinch free. It′s the single most valuable deco in terms of boosting collective damage as a ″team″. Better than attack, wex, crit boost, anything. But judging by what you said you don′t seem to care at all about the team performance, but just you and the numbers that show up on your screen.

Just got back on mhw again, save corrupted so decided to use LS this time, I've been using GS for too long lol. Getting addicted to this weapon, just 20 minutes on practice ground and I've picked up alot of combos on my own, tho it felt like cheating on how easy I've been plowing through monsters, my GS can never, i have to read the monster's movement and timings to land a hit especially with agile monsters, but with LS i feel like I'm walking carelessly on a park 😂just 5 mins and they're alreadt limping damn, it's so good.

Spirit thrust never hits for me. But if i focus on damage maybe ill be able to use it well. I also wpuld rather more wide sweeping attacks like in a muso game than the poke n thrust i usually get when i try to use it

Don’t hit b or circle and you won’t poke. Also, triangle or Y amidst the spirit combo will poke. That being said, poke into foresight is the highest level LS. Fast attacking monsters, the whole backside of the MR roster, won’t let you perform a full spirit combo over and over. Counter till red then drop the helmussy.

I just keep coming back to long sword. I literally use every weapon except bow guns because they’re just not my thing. But my biggest complaint about monster hunter is how frustrating dodge is. I can do a “perfectly timed dodge” to activate a skill like adrenaline rush like 99% of the time. But still get hit. I just want to be able to stay on the monster, foresight slash gives me exactly that. A solid counter to not have to run around and stay on the monster. Sheathing and unsheathing is way too much of a hassle that gets old after 600hrs

If you avoid an attack with the Iframes of the Iai spirit slash, you hit normally but you dont consume the charge. Thats the real deal to maximize damage in the real fights.

Honestly, youre nerfing yourself by not buying the dlc, because they nerf some moves and Weakness exploit skill, but buying iceborne also makes base game far easier imo, you get access fo clutch claw, hence wall bang. you dont have to tenderize monsters in base game imo. Next, additional moveset, they're balanced for master rank, which means theyre too good in base game, some of them are meh obviously, but something like special scope, perfect rush, gs tcs skip, etc are god send.

the raw Y combo is not as good as doing 2 Y's into Iai slash into spirit blade combo best combo is Y > Y > sheath Iai slash > Spirit blade combo > Sheath Iai slash > Y > Spirit blade Combo do this until spirit gauge is red. coming out of the spirit blade combo that turned your bar red do Sheath Iai slash > Healm breaker > Sheath Iai slash > Y > Spirit blade combo > Shealth Iai slash > helm breaker > Repeat also foresight slash takes spirit meter unless you counter successfully which makes it not consume any meter and using a slinger mid combo can change your orientation which can help a ton.
