The Lord Alone

Before handing down his law in Exodus 20, God first reminds the Israelites of who he is and what he has done for them: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt….” God is sovereign-the creator and sustainer of all things-and his first law, to “have no other gods before me,” is an expression not of arbitrary control, but of his character, given to lead his people into joy and fullness of life.
