They don't lean into the CGI like it's the only option available. Lots of creative camera work to make the hobbits look short, makeup to make the orcs look... Orcish, and practical effects wherever they can use them. To my knowledge, the use of CGI was minimal.

And that's exactly what they did, tho you can ofc notice some of Peter Jackson's distinctive directorial habits in the LOTR trilogy. Like the very close shots on a tilted frame of the face of Characters - especially evil ones, like Saruman. It's something that he often does in his movies, even on his very early ones like "Brain Dead"

1:38 "It WANTS to be found." - This line has stuck with me ever since I saw this trailer as a kid. I was familiar with LotR beforehand from the Rankin-Bass animated movie and from having the book in the house (though I never read it, because it looked so huge and hard to read to me at the time). This line really pushed through the idea: this wasn't just some magical McGuffin, a powerful item that could make whoever powerful or whatever. It was an actively malicious, corrupting entity, with a will of its own. That really sold me on it, I think.

I just came back to this trailer after watching the trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and this trailer blows that one out the water. For those that never read the books who watched this trailer, they got given a brief but sufficient insight into the lore and the story the film would be covering, they got shown the main characters of the story, they got told and shown what was at stake, they saw the main characters struggling against the odds and in peril, they got an epic score to go with an epic trailer for an epic film covering an epic story. There was real HYPE surrounding this film. I remember the hype even though I had never read the books before. 20 years later and, by comparison, TLotR:TRoP trailer is just a glorified slideshow to some generic piano music where the only thing people are excited about is colour of a couple non-Tolkein characters' skin colour and Galadriel in armour. It's a shame to see passion for such beloved piece of literature take a back seat.

We didn’t have the internet like we do now so I didn’t see this coming. I’ve never in my life, not before, or since at 37, experienced the emotional shock I had watching this trailer. I almost hyperventilated and definitely shed more than one tear. I never thought Hollywood had the ability to produce this story with justice. I still think about it. Seeing this trailer for the first time all those years ago is actually the clearest memory I have of first learning about a trilogy of books called The Lord of the Rings. My parents wouldn't let me go see it with then in theaters, and I found it incomprehensible that there could be a fantasy story that wasn't suitable for a kid (I think they were worried the Orcs, Uruk-Hai, and Ringwraiths would scare me too much). But as I've grown up and read the books as well as others of J.R.R. Tolkien's world, better and better understood the darkness in them, and watched these movies (extended editions) over and over, I have fallen in love with this story and this world more and more and more.

I don’t know how Hollywood continues to struggle to create good strong female characters when they have so many fantastic blueprints. The three main women in these films - Arwen, Galadriel and Éowyn - all have a wonderful gentle femininity and a sense of power, courage and strength that doesn’t ever stray into girlbossery or cringe-worthiness. I loved it as a young girl, it made me feel empowered. Nothing like the new Galadriel in the Rings of Power…

Kids who been born in this year have no idea what they been missing when we grew up. I remember me being 7 years old watching this. Before watching Lion King even. And when Gandalf the Grey fell in Moria I had the deepest emotion that I ever felt. And reminds me a lot about Mufasas fall.

The most perfect and epic trailer ever made. Yes there’s action and adventure, great effects, large sense of scale and a story with gigantic “end of the world” stakes… but the part which always strikes me as extra unique and special is how it underlines the tragedy and drama of their situation… “I wish the ring had never come to me… I wish none of this had happened”… that line mixed in with the slow motion shot of Sam breaking down in tears - that moment turns this from an exciting and grand adventure film into something epic, tragic, human and timeless - a commentary on the human cost of all good vs evil conflicts in real life. The trailer completely showcases all the film’s grand stakes and spectacle, but just that extra element of the human tragedy and the toll this epic journey will take on our main characters and how it’ll make our hearts ache as much as it will scare and excite us… that’s what makes it’s such a complete and perfect power-house of a trailer. A magical combination of Oscar worthy realistic gritty storytelling focused on exploring timeless human struggles with grand bombastic blockbuster spectacle. Perfection!

What an improvement on that first trailer this was. Classic trailer.

Epic, spine tingling trailer that changed the game for all trailers. The first film was the best of three as it was closest to the books. A magnificent achievement for 2001 (well 90’s) to bring such a complex world to life making the world look realistic. Not long after the first Matrix film. It’s what Game of Thrones achieved as it grew from strength to strength recently.

I would say... It's better then book. Most of the cuts were worth it. My least favourite part was Frodo and Sam adventure in book. I like it in movies. I read books 2 times and prefer movies.

About a month before release of this, my room mate who works in the movie industry got a preview disk that they let certain people have. It had no menu and would just start over after the end. We just let it run night and day for a month we loved it so much, I can recite 98% of it and I still went to see it in the theatre.

+Jay Bryant You really should watch it. It is without doubt the best three movies ever produced. The musical score, the acting, the battles, the beauty of the story... it is incredible. Compared to LORT, the Hobbit is about 6/10. LORT is just amazing in every way.
