I'm a lorry driver myself. My phone is always in my bag and stays there until my rest break. It takes my full concentration to drive a HGV, so I'm stunned that some drivers in lorries actually do. This is a tragedy that was avoidable. Happening too often now sadly.

Same here, I see plenty of other truckers aswell as car drivers still holding their phone. I think now they do it deliberately as an act of defiance as the risks are well known

I'm just about to start class 1 practical training soon, I used to be a bus driver. I cannot even fathom diverting my attention away from the road to focus on a phone. Not in a car, bus or lorry. Always watching where every corner of my vehicle is at every second. Even just a minor lapse in concentration can lead to a catastrophic disaster. No phone call, text or app is worth the risk

Thank you. Unfortunately since this was filmed I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which they think has been triggered by the trauma of the accident and I am now unable to drive and most days unable to walk. People do not realise the aftermath it is not just the loss of people you love. You have funerals to arrange and attend, court cases to attend if you choose, sorting through their personal belongings all while dealing with grief and still trying to put a brave face and be strong for your kids. I also want people to know that I am a person that finds it difficult to show people my vulnerability and tend to hide my emotions another reason why I was on the fence about making this public. I was also asked by a news channel if they could film the visit I had with the lorry driver but declined as this was personal to me and only me.

I just do not touch my phone once the engine is running when I'm driving. No message, no phone call, no social media post is worth the risk, let alone the lives that could be ended. Laws need to be changed and they need to be draconian. The soft approach is NOT working. Caught using your phone when driving? - Instant 5 year driving ban. Vehicle confiscated and sold at auction with proceeds going to a victims and family of victims of road deaths charity. Caught again: Jail, 5 years. No ifs, no buts.

Thank you but when this rta first happened you would have seen me in a different light had I been interviewed then. I was angry with everything and everyone to the point I was ready to give up. I’ve done a complete 360 now I’m no longer angry I let this consume me for far to long which had a detrimental impact on my kids and my mental wellbeing. Just because a person forgives does not mean they forget but this was my choice to forgive I needed closure and I don’t regret one minute of making the decision I did. I came away like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Hate is a horrible burden to carry and I was ready to free myself of the horrors I felt. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about my parents and I miss them like crazy but god made the decision that it was their time to go and as awful as this may sound I’m so pleased they went together and ppl reading this will probably think that’s a horrible thing to say but they don’t know the background they only read or see what the media puts out there. Much love to u and your family and thank u once again ❤

I spent five years driving between Northumberland and Darlington for work each day at varying times of day, this section of the A1 is very often busy with traffic exiting and joining the A1 from Durham and around, this means you get slow traffic on the carriageway accommodating the joining traffic every day at peak periods and at other times, anyone who regularly drives this route knows that. Ion Onut had a total disregard for any other road user, when he should have been concentrating on his job to drive he was not, over the years I have witnessed drivers doing their hair, makeup, reading phones and even a book on the A1, one thing that has changed down the years is the police presence, once you would see traffic patrols every trip up and down, since the 90's they started to vanish and driving standards went down.

Quick question, do all drivers of vehicles HGV’s or cars get this opportunity? There has been multiple attempts to humanise and normalise this guy despite him causing absolute destruction for no reason at all. Working and earning a living in another country but failed to take his responsibility as a driver seriously.
@ScruffyMisguidedAndBlue4 ай бұрын
Humanising the perpetrators makes people to realise it can happen to regular people who do something stupid and as a result pretty much lose everything they care about in life and will have to live with that guilt as long as they live. Demonising them would just make you think they are bad people who do a bad thing and don't care what happened, which in most cases isn't a true representation of them.
