Too many fighters in this era accept exchanging punches in equal positioning which means they are both set in their stance either bladed or squared. The silent agreement to keep that equal positioning is a tactical regression in boxing and often lends the more athletic fighter and/or the fighter with better top heavy defense the most success. This video explores getting to angles for advantageous positioning.

@BoxingGems so you doing a world tour? " coming to a gym near you" type tour. You would make the competition so intense i think fighters will only remain champions for two fights top...especially if the title contender hired you. No cap and on a big man vibe. Your breakdown is the best! I've been watching boxing for over 30 years with the most technical eyes and training forever, but I learned so much from you in terms of technical breakdowns and names of movements. The majority of recreational or competitive fighters just do the move we are taught or what we see other fighters that are successful for them, but many of us don't understand the hardcore technical detials that surround it the movements. Salute!!!

Great stuff. So important. I often think of this as 3-dimensional fighting. You’re not just north-south like in fencing. To me Loma and Crawford are the best practitioners of this sort of positioning. GGG was real good, but L and C bring it to another level.

The big matrix Oleksandr Usyk as well. Him and Loma go weak side. Emanuel Navarrete obviously does it strong side and weak side but he cross steps so he exposes himself. A few others. But it’s mostly lost in time.

@BoxingGems

@@seanrc8642 He would be able to do it against Canelo especially. Canelo’s lateral movement always needs work. He may have to do it vs Nelo. Staying in a 50/50 against a guy who became a pro at 140/147 at 15 years old doesn’t sound intelligent since Crawford was at 135 at 25-26 years old.
@bazookablvd

I think Mayweather really took the cake on positioning as well, Tricking his opponent to be in A certain spot then himself being in the position to take advantage, Crawford does this well and Loma too, I think Canelo even tho he was slow feet can do this also, Actually Canelo must do this to be successful, when he can’t do this he is very unsuccessful because he has slow feet

In fighting is one of the best ways to fight for better opportunities. Arm wrestling on the inside and using maneuvers to trap your opponents arm and create space for your own, it’s a lost art. It’s practically dead now. Andre Ward was the last great in-fighter I remember, and he got called dirty constantly. Now while he did have his fair share of questionable maneuvers, and majorly of great in-fighters were roughhousing, Ward got called dirty a lot just for the trait of being rough. I remember watching Stanionis vs Butaev on the Spence-Ugas undercard and the fight being so boring, that was not good boxing. Both just standing behind their high guards throwing power shots that just barely land if at all and people wanted to act like that shit was exciting. No getting off track, no attacking at an angle, just rock em sock em and the dudes weren’t getting hit cleanly enough so that aspect of it wasn’t even fun to watch.

Per the last live - talking about equal positioning and going towards a fighter’s backhand in a closed stance - gems told me to jab the back hand (while having a plan of course). Watched a match where this was on display but didn’t realize it watching it years ago. Hearns v Barkley 1. Barkley jabs the back hand, while occasionally working to his right as well. Even when he misses the jab on the 1st knockdown, he drops the lead onto the head/neck for control, as Tommy is bent over, to then take that strong side and launch a right. Hard to see the feet but Iran achieved superior positioning while Tommy could not reset in time. Tommy tried to swing his back leg around but was too late. Funny how the commentators were bashing Tommy instead of acknowledging Iran’s strategy. Iran did take some good shots leading up to the knock down tho. Still looking for a Patreon request 😂

(Orthodox) On a bladed opponent, Jab left twice, the jab lands when the lead foot lands. You’re stepping left in a circle, you aren’t closing distance so the op’s back hand SHOULD have to reach to hit you. If you’re not sure you can jab the back hand instead of the head. On the second jab and simultaneous step left, after your back foot lands throw the back hand…start your combo.

@BoxingGems
@BoxingGems Жыл бұрын
Not if done properly. The jab is already closer to your opponent. Fighters just have to be careful that they are moving left or right and not forward/closer then left or right. Plus, say your opponent has a major reach advantage and you are exposing yourself to the back hand using proper footwork. Well you definitely know that you are moving away from the lead hand and towards the back hand so you should be anticipating it and ready defensively for it. You can jab the back hand instead of the head to be cautious. You can also circle to the weak side using the same way which will give you advantageous positioning as well.

Super informative video. Lots of people and coaches would say to circle away from the power hand so you don't run into it. What do you think about this? It seems like a lot of the greats tend to circle towards the power side and it maybe a lot better offensively but since the greats are better than most, they can avoid it despite circling into it. What are some tactics one can use to avoid getting hit by the rear hand when circiling towards that side. It seems that duran keeps a very offensive left hand to keep the right hand occupied with catching it. Some others seem to circle really deep on the inside angle, making rear hand get smother or getting to an angle so deep that an inside slip will make the punch completely miss.
@BoxingGems
@BoxingGems Жыл бұрын
It’s about keeping distance until you want to close it. Don’t step up and left just step left and range will still be outside typically. To cover the step regardless you can jab or pin the back hand instead of the head. Then of course you can always circle the other way to the weak side
