*notes* - I accidentally show Mary Pickford for Alice Guy-Blaché, repeating a mistake other websites have made. - Histoire(s) du Temps has been found on an obscure torrent site! - The footage of Prem Parbat is likely authentic, meaning it should be placed on a higher level. - I'm aware Zack Snyder's Justice League was never technically lost, but instead locked away and unfinished. It just fit the "Lost and Found" level the most. - You may assume the laser disc transfers of the Star Wars original trilogy are the theatrical versions as advertised, but even those have slight differences from their initial runs. Likewise, no home release of The Phantom Menace is identical to what was released in theaters in 1999. - Him probably was real. I just thought it would be fun to stick it where I did. - Yes, I know my French is terrible.

So sad to think that 80% of silent films are now lost, the total amount should be around 3500 films. Theda Bara was in more than 40 movies and only 3 or 4 are available to watch nowadays.

The lost film that I most want to see is "A Woman of Osaka" (1940), directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. It was probably lost in the fire-bombing of Tokyo during WW2. In the 1975 documentary "Kenji Mizoguchi: The Life of a Film Director", Mizoguchi's long time writing collaborator, Yoshikata Yoda, highlights "A Woman of Osaka" as one of Mizoguchi's finest works.

I swear to God I found a clip of "Cure for Insomnia" online when I was a teenager circa 2007 - 2009. Don't remember the exact year. I became interested in conceptual art and things like art films at that time and sought out as much material like that online as I could. "A Cure for Insomnia" was one of those things I managed to come across and I clearly remember it alternating between Groban reciting his poem and muted footage from porn films and heavy metal videos, just as it's always described. I also found at least a large chunk of a film called "The Longest Most Meaningless Movie In the World" which was 48 hours in it's entirety. I can remember clearly skipping thru that one as well and seeing that it was made out of discarded film clips, commercials, etc. A few years later I couldn't find these films anymore and to this day I still can't relocate those clips but I swear to God I saw them. Just thought you might be interested in knowing this. Obviously I have no way to prove it. Nice video thanks for your efforts!

Should've included the works of Quirino Cristiani, who created the first feature length animated movie(El Apostol in 1927) and the first sound animated film(Peludopolis in 1931), both political satires in Argentina and both before Disney. They have both been lost in a fire since the 60s and only exist through documentary footage and some short recreations.

I have a few theory's one why we will never see the original versions of Star Wars. 1. Disney doesn't see the profit in it. 2. George has something in the contract that says they can't release the original versions, maybe until after he passes. 3. The original versions don't exist anymore.

Marcia Lucas owns the rights to the theatrical cut of A New Hope. One thing to remember is that there is no singular original cut of ANH and Empire, as for both films' original releases there was a (for the time) groundbreaking stereo cut and a mono cut for theaters that didn't have stereo sound systems yet. The mono cuts (available somewhere online as .mp4 transfers of old prints) had a few alternate dialogue takes, sound effects, and lines not in the stereo version. Some of these actually found their way back into later releases. As for Empire, George wasn't happy with the final miniature sequence released for the première, so he went back and reshot them while the movie was in theaters.

Lets just take a step back and pray that these lost or destroyed film are found again. Like seriously, we are talking the vast majority of the early 20th century of Cinema right here. Its a shame that back then no one took silent films significant seriously for future generations. Its seems like some others old, lost and forgotten cinema will just still be hidden in the sand forgotten through time like the other old civilizations.

Pas d'existence is probably one of the neatest things i've heard. even debating whether or not this film and this event even happened is part of the whole idea, y'know? like the director (or i suppose whoever started the rumor, if you believe this all never happened) probably wanted people to question what a film is, what existence is, metatextuality, etc., etc. i can definitely see how this could all be a hoax made up merely to represent the idea of non-existence, but idk man French filmmakers and theorists in the 60s and 70s were on that weird good shit this very well could have actually happened. if it did i have no doubt Roland Barthes is involved.
@ColPanic-hr1ry

Personally, I don't believe in its existence (or the explanation of its non-existence). "Pas d'existence" is so awkwardly phrased that I don't think a real French person would have ever said it. I could be wrong though, as French is only my second language.

I've always found the Thief and the Cobbler an interesting example of ambition vs realism in regards to production. On one hand it is commendable for someone to be so dedicated to making a project the best they can, but on the other hand as an animator myself, working on such a project would be a nightmare if it wasn't my own. We went over it in one of my classes where my professor talked about how Williams never properly made a definitive script or storyboard for the team to work off of even when given plenty of time and finances, as well as how his perfectionism negatively effected those working under him. If a project is just you or several equally invested people all on the same page, then by all means take as long as you wish, but if you have tens of dozens of others working to fulfill your vision it feels only fair to try and be considerate of their time. I appreciate how here you didn't praise Williams for his over-amibtions, I've seen people who view his 30 years on the project as this wonderful grand artistic journey ripped away without considering how the team must've felt in contrast.

Ray Carney wants the original cut of Shadows (and various other versions of John Cassavetes films he's uncovered) to be seen; it's Gena Rowlands who is blocking it, the longer cut of Husbands, etc., from release. In fact, the original cut of Shadows was initially planned to be on Criterion's "Five Films" Cassavetes box, but Rowlands balked at Carney's involvement and threatened to pull the plug on the entire project if Carney was involved. Rowlands and Al Ruban won't participate in (and therefore, allow to be made) any Cassavetes-related project that depicts him as anything but an endlessly generous, saint-like figure.

As a full blooded Србин thank God that our once lost film was found and was put on DVD, so that all my fellow Serb brothers and sisters and myself can watch it in its full glory, to see an inactment of the actions of our immensely brave and glorious warrior, Карађорђе Петровић/Црни Ђорђе - Отац Србије whom during the first Србски Устанак freed our country from Ottoman rule for the first time in 3 centuries. The Library of Congress has the original version of Star Wars. It had asked Lucas for a copy so they could preserve the film in the National Film Registry. He sent the 1997 restored version of the movie. The LoC asked for a copy as it was originally presented in 1977. Lucas said one didn't exist. So the LoC preserved the original 35mm print submitted for copyright protection. But apparently it's for archival only and cannot be screened. Still, one day the print might be digitized and could be viewed in it's original glory when it enters the public domain in 2072.

I have been researching horror films for about 30 years now. The last several I've dedicated pretty much exclusively to lost, forgotten and unknown horror. POST-1950 specifically, and in doing so I've come away with a perspective that sees the decades-long talk of "film preservation" as a complete fail. Focused on the wrong areas, inspiring complacency in the public's view of the subject (most associate it solely with old film), and no preservationists (as far as I know) who are in any way pro-active in preventing future film loss. My impression of the reality of "film preservation" (and I really wish I had the artistic talent to create this) is a twist on Nero playing the fiddle as Rome burns, only in my version, it is contemporary lost horror films like _Hard Day at Blue Nose_ , _Scream Evelyn Scream_ , _Silent Death_ and others burning and crying out for help. Meanwhile, our film preservationist "Nero" is totally oblivious/uninterested in them or anything happening to them as he wanders in the foreground calling "London After Midnight?", "London After Midnight, where are you?" I guarantee, within the next decade, we are going to see a sharp increase in lost films. In fact it has already started but it can take years, or even decades, to realize that a particular film is MIA because it's always assumed others have it. Many films, even from the 1980s, are in more trouble than anyone realizes. Many no longer have surviving film elements and have never been released on home media. Even those released on VHS aren't safe. Many junked the format en masse around 2000 and tapes don't last forever. We're already well beyond their original projected lifespan and some films _only_ exist right now on those VHS tapes.

The "lab fire" story behind My Best Friend's Birthday is a myth and there never was a "finished" version; Tarantino actually lost some footage by accident, and decided not to carry on with the production. Which he apparently still occasionally talks about remounting. And you could include a vast proportion of Orson Welles' work across this iceberg, so much of his work having been mangled by studios, never properly finished or otherwise unreleased; his Merchant of Venice was actually stolen and all he was left with was one reel and a negative without sound. Apparently it's been restored and reconstructed, but I can't imagine how.

Two films missing from this Iceberg that I think is worth noting The original Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 which had Jackie Gleason playing both Buford and the Bandit, sounds dumb? Yup it is, but so is the cut we got, but in a chaotic sense I would like to see this cut. This is Mostly Lost given some blink and you miss it scenes in the film we got still has the Gleason cut John Hughes cuts, turns out John Hughes writes and record a lot more than what is included in release, Plains Trains, and Automobiles is probably the most notable one given there is a lot cut, and a lot of it was pretty good, including a emotional scene of John Candy to witch Steve Martin still get teary eye from, the Pizza scene which gives context into why that guy broke into their hotel room, the scene with the Wisconsin State Trooper was much longer, and many more, this is partially lost given many of these scenes are in the trailers

I mourn the loss of London After Midnight and hope that maybe somewhere someday, a print will turn up. It happened with Metropolis, so who knows?

On James Rolfe’s video on lost horror films I saw a comment where someone claims that there dad saw London After Midnight in the 70s (at that point the film was considered lost). Apparently a film collector owned it but the collection got sold off after he died. Don’t know if this claim is true or not, but if it’s true then a copy could still out there.

Most People that actually saw “ London After Midnight “ Back in the 1920s ,said it was not a really great film...on the other Hand, Lon Chaney’s “ The Miracle Man “ Of 1919 is said to be The Spectacular Film That Launched Chaney’s Career to SuperStardom ....a Two Minute Clip Of this Film is on KZbin....and even this short Snippet is Electrifying ! ..There must be 30 or 40 Chaney Films that might be found someday...out of his 300 FILMS 📣📣📣📣

I think we need to ban fire with just how many of these films were lost in one! Do film vaults just spontaneously combust?
@marathecrayon7565
@marathecrayon7565 8 ай бұрын
Yeah there should definitely be more care given to the remaining films to prevent more loss. The problem with many earlier types of film was the flammability. Hopefully more can be done to prevent future vault fires. It would be good if more silent films that are currently being preserved could be transferred digitally since they seem to be more prone to damage

If you are referring to the home release VHS box set containing the OT movies, you can still get those online for $50-$70. The VERY original cut is stored away in a vault at Skywalker Ranch and I'm near positive it will never be seen by the general public.

I have a lost film I want to find. It's called "close shave" and little info about it exists online. It's a 1979 sex comedy with only one review on letterboxd, a page on a website called temple of schlock, and cast and crew info. Please help

Excellent work my friend. Many of the films you covered here were some of the times the first of me hearing of them and the stories behind them, except for the likes of Other side of the wind, Once upon a time in America and (many because of the recency of & the loudness of the internet) The Snyder cut. I do have one addition (not to point out you missed but just for fun (?)) The original Gone in 60 seconds from 1974 There was an original cut of the film that was closer too 120 minuets, or more, in length. It was re-edited to A: trim the run time down and improve the pacing of the first third of the film, & B: Was mainly due to some of shots showed a character in the film talking on a phone while standing in front of a wall covered in Playboy centerfolds. Due to that the MPAA was going to give the film a R rating instead of the PG film film got after the editing was done. There is a copy of this opening but it only exists as a hidden special feature on the US DVD release, tho it is literally just single frames from each shot cut together in very quick succession. One addition, when the film was restored for DVD in the early 2000's the original mono soundtrack was replaced with stock music. I've heard two reasons why was this was done. First one was original composer Phil Kachaturian couldn't come to an agreement for royalties/ copyright, but i also heard that Kachaturian said that the team working on the restoration had spent so much time on fixing the visuals (all the masters were found in boxes all scratched, color all faded and on top of that nothing was labeled.) that they ran out of time to do the soundtrack. He has since uploaded all six or so tracks on to the internet. Anyway excuse the rambling, first time viewer here and i greatly enjoyed the video :)

Oh another forgotten film that was later found is Carnivalé released in 1999. It was originally released in Europe in French, it was shown on television for I think one day (please correct me if I’m wrong) on Télétoon (Not to be confused with the Canadian program, Télétoon was in French) copies exist but if they do end up for sale they are worth around 6,000 dollars. Somebody found a English dub on a 2000 release, along with a Chinese, French and Spanish dub. You can watch it now on Archive.

Destino was only finished by Disney (in a bad poorly animated way) because Salvador Dali's as sketches and art for the film were requested by his estate. Because the art would only belong to Disney if the film was made. I went to the premiere in LA. They had his attention and were using the short as a way to sell his art. Very gross as is Disney's ideology.

I remember watching A Page of Madness years back on a classic movies channel. Loved it, and I believe the host mentioned there originally being a narrator in the theater who would explain the plot to the audience. I really wish there were a remaining script of some kind to give detail to certain scenes but this may be unlikely to be found
