In 1993 my parents sat next to John Candy at a Chicago Blackhawks game. They said he was the nicest guy ever and talked to him the entire game. They told him how he was my favorite actor, at 10 years old. He offered his address to my parents so I could write him. I wrote him a hand written letter explaining how I loved his movies and wished I could have his autograph. He wrote me back and sent me a signed picture of himself. What a legend that man was. May he rest in peace.

Editing is such an underrated skill. I can’t imagine the painstaking process and anxiety of cutting the right scenes. Especially when the lost footage of this movie is still better than most modern comedies

100% agree, and people don't seem to realize that, with some exceptions,* every movie as seen in theaters *IS* the director's cut. They cut it that way for a reason, to benefit the movie as a whole. Some scenes were near and dear to their hearts, no doubt, but in the interest of bettering the picture, they had to go. (Though it is still nice to see the deleted scenes to fill in some gaps and have some fun). A good example for showing how editing can save a movie, watch "How Star Wars was saved in the edit". About 18 minutes long: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXewqoCugr53hM0 * Studios notoriously meddle in this process and want the movie to be a certain length, etc. This is what happened with the theatrical cut of Zack Snyder's Justice League. The studio wanted it to be as close to two hours as possible and the movie suffered because of it (and other reasons...).

John Candy was my favorite actor when I was a kid and he still is. His death was a heartbreaking loss to the world, there hasn't been an actor quite like him since, truly a remarkable talent. This is my favorite movie as well, so this new release man, with all the extra footage, its like Christmas came a month early, awesome video my man.

I was cast in Cool Runnings as a cop who arrests John Candy at a Calgary bar. I was so thrilled to be able to work with John. Unfortunately, the night before the scene was scheduled, the AD called and informed me that the scene was being cut and that I would not be working with anyone on Cool Runnings. So gutted. I worked with Joe Flaherty years later, but missing John Candy... that one hurt. Fortunately, they kept me in the credits, so I receive residuals 4 times a year for about 11 bucks... RIP John!

I always liked the references to deleted scenes that were left in the movie. They imply exactly what they are - incidents we weren't privy to - and adds to the film. You don't always have to see something in a film to know it happened - it adds depth without bloating the run time.

Yeah, hearing about the beer cans blowing up all over the bed is funnier to hear about than it was to see it. Martin's dry, half awake delivery of "You left them on a vibrating bed, what did you think was gonna happen?" always cracks me up.

Absolutely. We might never know everything that happened behind the scenes to make this release possible, but in my mind, there's no question that the previous video got the ball rolling in the right direction. Though even if it didn't, everyone who watches these videos is that much more likely to pick up this new release, showing the studios there's a demand for this kind of thing. Respect Joe for wanting to keep humble, but he deserves some credit for sure. This is a huge validation of his work, and I'm very happy for him.

I really like what you said at the end of the video about Hughes letting them improvise, but also knowing when to cut out the parts that aren't needed. I honestly feel this is something that more comedies need to be aware of. So many comedies try to rely so much on improvisation that it just drags the whole movie down by having scenes go on until they're just no longer funny, or even worse feeling disconnected from the film in general. Really glad to see that Paramount released these deleted scenes though

I agree most mainstream comedies really rely on the improvising and it doesn’t work. It’s like half the script is missing and they just write in scene improvise moving on after that and they’ll cut it down to what they think is funny. But then again since mainstream comedies are becoming less and less of a thing mostly because studios are too afraid of social media if they try anything outside of bare bones stuff seriously half the comedies that come out recently that aren’t family related always feel like a road trip films.

Great video. The most impressive thing about how the final film was edited is the closing scenes. In the original cut, Del basically follows Neil home (which is why Neil says "what are you doing here?" when he arrives, because it's actually his home town train station) and gives him the monologue which test audiences thought made Del look manipulative and creepy. The solution was to reverse the shot of the train leaving the station so it looks like Neil has gone back (and also adding some outtakes of Steve Martin laughing on the train intercut with scenes from the Thanksgiving dinner, with Del obviously not shown), if you look closely you can see a man walking backwards in the background. Completely changes the tone of the film.

Also looking at it again now the number on the train above the red/yellow light is back to front and the reflection of the train station sign in the train window is readable when it should be backwards (and is the wrong station anyway as it's footage from when he arrives at his home station "Linden")

Were in the era of re issues of anything that can be bloated out for the hardcore fans and sold for top dollar to them. When the bloat is done right it is an awesome experience, but there is some rubbish that really should never see the light of day, that's why it's deleted or not part of a final cut. Some people will argue that seeing what should never be seen can destroy the essence of the released 'masterpiece'. Sometimes the little Wizard hiding behind the curtain never needs to be seen.

I've read the shooting script for Breakfast Club. Most of what was shot was in the movie. The most prominent thing cut out was a bizarre series of scenes where Paul Gleason watches a gym teacher doing aerobics, with specified closeups of her ass. Apparently the studio wanted at least one T&A scene, even in a film set in a school library.

There is a fan edit extended cut of The Breakfast Club which adds in all the deleted scenes. The extras are lower quality and nothing missing from the final cut really takes away from the film. It's an interesting watch...

@@jacobscarberry4799 It would not have sucked, LOL. All films need to go through an editing process. It's true that ANY film can be ruined in the editing room by a bad editor. This idea that Star Wars was "saved" by its editors is utter hyperbole. One article came out with that thesis and it was picked up by far too many outlets as gospel truth, solely because the story had a "feminist" angle to it. It's nonsense. Even George Lucas himself was a fine editor, and he could've successfully edited the film all by himself if he had to. And different editing choices being made by a different competent editor would be very unlikely to turn a film all the way from "Oscar-worthy classic" to "sucking."

The editor probably knew that, but Kevin Feige mandating that tons of extraneous characters get bit parts in Black Panther 2 so he can seed future MCU films creates a whole different set of demands for him to meet.

It's interesting how the stories of director's "losing" control of their movies makes us think that any deleted scenes hints at a movie that's not their vision, but if anything, the greatest skill of direction is knowing what to take out. This is a great example of things being fun to see in full, but needing to be cut down. And a great insight to how long a lot of movies tend to be after shooting, and that editing and trimming them into what we all know and love is a very important skill.

the mistake people make is its not the director's movie....the director is paid by the studio to make a movie that the studio is paying for. The only way its the director's movie is if they're paying for the movie....New Hope is Fox's movie, they funded it, Empire, Jedi and the prequel trilogy are Lucas's movie as he self funded all of the other 5 films Fox just distributed them.

I would love to see some of these back in the movie (Like John Candy in the bathroom making a mess), but that cut from "I can't wait to see what happens next" to Candy on the plane is absolutely perfect. Cutting the extra footage in between was a brilliant call, and shows how important a good editor is.

I would love to make my own edit version of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. However I wish all of the deleted footage surfaced and I could try to piece together the 2 hour version John Hughes originally intended before Paramount wanted to cut another half hour of it. Basically extend the motel scenes, add the affair subplot, the Wisconsin state trooper scene, the black eye scene, and the original ending with them at Thanksgiving.

Out of all of them I think the one I would like back most is the last hotel. Where Neil wakes up in the morning freezing to death and Del Has gotten every blanket and cover it even looks like he took down the curtains and threw them over him and Is in full clothing that made me laugh so hard that’s what I would love to have seen put back in that and also the deleted scene that makes it on TV airings

Awesome job in getting Paramount to release these deleted scenes! There's no way you had no effect on that decision haha. Not only is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles the best Thanksgiving movie ever, it's one of the best road movies ever. I've seen it dozens of times and never noticed all the minor plot holes. The only thing I did question was how was the bathroom already so dirty and how were there so many wet towels when it was clear that once Neil and Del arrived at the hotel Neil immediately took a shower. Same with Del's line about the beers blowing up. Ultimately it didn't matter but it's great that there are actual answers to these questions. Great video!

Would have been amazing to see those deleted scenes remastered and integrated back into the film, giving us the full 3+ hour film. I originally thought this was the case with this release but no luck. I have a feeling if Criterion got their hands on it they would've done just that. @@colin72 the found footage was a VHS tape, which means 480i is all you're ever going to get. Any fan-made cut is going to have quality changes from scene to scene. Can't re-scan every frame like a reel of film, since tapes only record a video signal, but I would still see it.

Watching all these extended scenes and seeing what got cut really makes me appreciate the smart editing choices that went into movies. And the ability to admit that something isn't good enough to make the final cut and the amazing importance of proper pacing. Its a lesson that is getting forgotten these days as movies just keep getting longer and longer and no one cares about pacing anymore. There's maybe a couple jokes I would have liked to have seen kept in (John Candy in the bathroom, to help make better sense of the mess and the Gigi scene) just short enough little bits. But ultimately everything is and was very expendable and belong on the cutting room floor.

I've only purchase 4K Blu-Rays when they're dirt cheap, $15 or under. Seeing this actually being sold for a reasonable $23 as of writing made it an easy sell. I know it's only one copy of a movie, but hell still voting with my wallet. Kudos to Paramount for adding these deleted scenes and thank you Joe for raising awareness.

deleted scenes are generally left out because the story doesn't need it. I haven't seen these scenes so they may well be the exception, but I do find that whenever I view deleted scenes for movies I always have the same feeling which is "well, I can see why they cut that out".

The finish cut to me feels a little like we're checking in on the two as they make it home. Not unlike how you might call someone or get texts now as someone is driving to meet you. Except this is a much longer trip to get where they're going. We're checking in for moments and see whats going on with how they're getting home. In the extended moments it feels more... movie? It feels like we're watching a whole story rather then that kinda check in way. Released cut feels like talking to someone "Oh god the motel room smelled like beer, some punk came in and stole my money" as they give their highlights of the day before having to hang up to continue moving. Maybe thats silly but I think this movie is a classic!

Oh man! Those deleted scenes are priceless! Especially the hotel scene involving Dell and the young thief. The dialogue was hilarious! Pretty much all the hotel scenes were stellar. I laughed my butt off. Really should have been left in. 😂😂 I just finished watching the movie again for the 15th time; and seeing these deleted scenes shed a lot of light and understanding onto the story! John and Steve were amazing in this movie. There acting skills or phenomenal, which shows us how highly talented they both are (were, John Candy) and the chemistry was unlike other comedians I personally have ever seen. It's great that they cut out the scene at the courthouse. Neal punching Del would have gone against the story arc that Del was finally able to bond with Neal in the El Rancho motel, and he seemed to finally be accepting him for who he is.

It's so fascinating what you can remove from a movie, and the audience just subtly "assumes" what happened. - A great example would be Neil's outburt. - I agree with you that the outburst comes a little soon, but your brain says "I'm assuming some other stuff happened off-camera". - I know it'll never happene, but I wish the original John Hughes cut could be made. We lost Mr. Candy far too soon. One of his lesser-known roles was in 'Only The Lonely', which was more of a dramatic turn for Candy, though there were still bits of humor sprinkled in. I honestly believe he would have ventured further into dramatic roles and likely would have earned some Oscar nominations along the way, had he not passed so early in life.

Thank you for drawing attention to the extended version of the movie. I am sure you had a major part (i.e. were among the catalysts) that got the movement going. I cannot wait to see all of these deleted scenes as the ones you showed look really good. One day, I hope we get a Ferris Bueller's Day Off extended version as this movie was originally 2.5 hours long. It would be a dream come true to even see a whole box set of extended versions of John Hughes films as I'm sure there'd be some great scenes that never saw the light of day.

Great video! This is my favorite John Hughes movie and one of my all-time favorite movies ever. I saw it in the theater New Year’s Eve 1987 and have been hooked ever since. Thanks for the content and getting those cut scenes out to see the light of day. It makes me love the movie even more!

Very cool to see :) I did notice some of the parts should of had more back story to them but like you said it was edited very well. I'm now almost Steve's age when they filmed it which is crazy to think. I sometimes feel like the 80's or 90's are still only 10 or 15 years ago :(.

I said it in your first video, but I'm glad these scenes got cut. Most of them really paint Del in a more negative light, especially with him going through Neal's stuff. I like him admitting to paying for the pizza with Neal's wallet, but I hoped the set up would have been better, as in maybe Del couldn't find his wallet, but again it paints him poorly with the weak tip for the delivery boy. As far as the end of the movie, I consider Del and Neal's issues with each other resolved in their final motel stay where they eat chips and booze, so anything after that served as little value. John Hughes was correct in standing by his final cut, since it made this movie a masterpiece.

I agree with you completely and a lot of these deleted scenes are needless Exposition or just filler as the actors are spinning their wheels maybe improving looking for some extra material. The extra taxi scene where doobie says he's going to kill Neil would have been really ridiculous. In one of the books about this movie the actor who played doobie explains that they just shot some after hours improv with the three of them the three of them which John Hughes just kept as a special 10 minutes short and I guess that was never intended to really be in the movie

Love the comment about appreciating the willingness to edit out the riffing and improv. It feels like so many of today's comedies have 45 minutes of material but are padded with over an hour of self-indulgent vamping. I get that the cast and crew were having fun, and that's great, but it doesn't translate to us (who weren't there in the moment) and ye gods, it just drags. Remarkable editing job on PTA by Paul Hirsch and good on Hughes for backing him up 100%.

This movie and Uncle Buck are both great movies. and John Candy was fantastic he was so AWESOME!!!! he reminds of my best friend who's gone now. I always loved his little laugh. besides his acting career he was also a good person. he is truly missed. not to take anything away from Steve Martin, that's for sure. why they never included the deleted scenes before is beyond me? and now I will have remember this new release. I'm going to make note of it.

Thanks for this and the previous video on this movie! I didn't know there was a new Blu-ray version with all of these extras but I will definitely go out and buy it now. Like many others I watch this film on Thanksgiving but this year I watched it a week before Thanksgiving on my tablet during a transatlantic flight to United States to prepare for my Thanksgiving visit.

These actors should have worked together at least one more time. They were absolutely perfectly cast for this movie. Seen this movie at the theatres and I can tell you the laughs were continuous and let’s face it impossible not to shed a tear or two at the end of the movie. I think some if not most of the edited out scenes were a good call. For example the spilled beer comment. It's just so much funnier him to say that without any showing of the scene because it lets the audience just imagine how much more of a disaster being around Del was.

The pacing is part of what makes the movie so good. The extra scenes would definitely add more context and more laughs. However I have to agree that they weren’t essential. Having so much to choose from allowed them to make every scene great. As stated that’s why Hughes shot so much footage in the first place.
