I live in Panama, and this case obsessed me, you missed a few details, for example there was a taxi driver who took the girls to the trail, in the same taxi were 2 more persons, when the taxi driver was interrogated by the police he said that after leaving the girls in the trail he saw a car pick-up 4x4 arriving to the area... The most curious is that this taxi driver was found dead in a river 1 year after the incident. ... I heard that now the CIA is taking over this case and others misterious dead ocurred near the area, It is possible that a serial killer is near here.... May this girls rest in Peace and their family find peace in there hearts.

My question is why has this questionable "tour guide" never been arrested and brought in for questioning regarding this case. Even if it is all circumstantial, there seems to be far too much evidence pointing at him, between his past reputation for inappropriate behavior toward female tourists, enough so that he was known for it in the community, reports, unconfirmed as they may be, of him approaching the pair less than a day before their disappearance, and the proximity of their remains being less than half a mile from his ranch. All told, these seem like too many coincidental factors for authorities to ignore, so why has he not at least been brought in for questioning, being the obvious prime suspect? Or was he brought in and that detail was just omitted from this telling of the story? I'd also be curious if the locals suspect this man, even if the authorities don't, and if he's been ostracized from the area, made aware that his behavior and the suspicion thrown on him by this case is bad for business for all tour guides in the area, and therefore that he is not welcome there anymore.

I watch a lot of true crime cases, but for some reason this case is the only one that genuinely terrifies me. I think its cause either option is equally terrifying- either they got lost, and one of them had to watch her best friend die then try to survive herself in unfamiliar terrain, or these two girls had to deal with being pursued by someone or something in the middle of the Panama jungle for nearly two weeks. The pictures are so scary themselves, the aura around them scares me so much, I cant imagine being there when the photos were taken. I dont like to think of why the photos were taken. I have a hard time thinking she took them to light her way cause a lot of them are so clear. Assuming she was walking wouldnt the photos be blurry? Idk. I have no idea what happened here and any possibility is genuinely horrifying. I like to think they died suddenly and not in pain, but sadly that's likely not the truth. I hope we can find out what happens so their families can find peace

His actions afterwards (going into the room first before police) and his turned down invitation for excursions the day before were very suspicious. Idk what did the police think by not investigate him thoroughly. That’s why this will stay a cold case because there are simply no new credible leads because the investigators didnt bother looking. It could be that he was innocent but there are too much suspicion needed to be cleared first.

Those two women definitely weren't ugly, and I know how popular Panama is for tourism, hell a huge chunk of my graduating class went there for their graduation trip, and it's kind of a custom for others to do the same where I'm from. Just sounds like a perfect place for a serial killer to reside and have a real good time...plenty of people that could easily go missing that no one would miss for a while at least, since they're away on a trip and not expected back home for a while, local authorities that are all too quick to blame missing people on the terrain and nature of the tourism of the place, most likely because they don't want to mess up their cash cow, plenty of open country to hide bodies/remains. Yep, my first bet would definitely be on serial killer.

Great video. I've heard about this case before and I have to admit hearing about it really put the hook in me to find out all I could about this case to come up with my own theory. If I may add some info. The backpack and remains were found upstream from where the girls were supposed to be hiking which I believe was over 10 hours hiking from where they were supposed to be. It was also at the beginning of the rainy season which hindered search operations and makes me more suspicious of the backpack and the contends being dry when found. In regards to the photos I too had noticed a change in the mood of the daytime photos. Which makes me believe that a third party is with them. I think the missing photo has the image of the third party. I think the third party was luring them into whatever they had in store for the girls so they hadn't taken their camera or phones, yet. The girls realizing something was wrong got away from them and tried to call for help. The girls were now lost and wandering around for days and died by injury or by the hand of the third party that was tracking them down. I think it was the third party that was trying to enter the pin on Kris' phone. I believe that Kris may have told Lisanne her pin number. I can't be sure of course but we also can't be sure that both girls remained together the whole time. After all the last photo we have of Lisanne was the day they disappeared before the change of mood and terrain of the daytime photos. In my opinion the night time photos were taken by the third party to make it look like the girls got lost and died by accident. The lack of large remains makes me think their bodies were dissolved in acid since besides a lack of animal claw or teeth marks there was no sign of cutting marks on the bones.They planted the backpack and its contents so it would be found because they knew the corrupt government would call it an accident. Third party? The rancher that everybody was pointing to in the town. As far as I know the text messages from the girls were never released. It would be interesting to see when the last texts were sent and what they said.

I would just add: You do NOT need someone's access pin to dial emergency services See for yourself: lock your phone, go to the access screen. Look at the bottom right corner (on most phones) see where it says emergency call? If you were to dial emergency services, the call WOULD be allowed. This is a universal rule. So....why, if it was lisanne, would she continually try & enter the correct pin, but not try to call emergency services??? This. Was. Murder. These girls were stalked. They realized this, & tried to call for help. If you would like to hear my theory as to what happened from here, let me know.

The dog only joins trekkers for a short way. It was well known for doing that. As it lives with the restaurant owners at the start of the trail. I am sure “Blue” returned long before the girls encountered foul play, or got into trouble. I just don’t understand why they went trekking without a guide in the mountains and forests of Panama in limited clothing, with one bottle of water between them and leaving their compass back in their homestay. They must also have known about the English man that went missing in Boquette 5 years earlier, as they had researched these places in detail, well in advance of travelling there.

@Yisabeilaa6 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you covered that case I became passionate about a few years ago. I read multiples articles and watched dozen of videos about it. At the very beginning, I was sure there were some kind of foul play involved. But after so many researches, I am pretty positive they died from natural conditions and ended up being eaten (dead or almost dead) by animals. One thing everybody must know about that case is that there is PLENTY of contradictories informations on the internet about it, so don't jump on every details you heard. Here's my (LONG) theory : - The girls didn't plan to go for the real big hike that day. They plan it for the day after, with the guide guy (you know, they booked a tour for the day after with a guide and never showed up). The stuff they brought with them shows that they didn't want to go that far (not real food apparently and not a lot of water). The fact that they took the dog with them is a proof as well. Its seems that they just wanted to check the environnement of their future hike with the dog, having a long walk with the animal in this place that, apparently, excited them. Plus I'm not sure that the owner of the dog would have let them go for a real long hiking day with the animal. - They did go too far anyway and get lost. How ? The dog once again maybe the explanation. It may has run away for some reasons and the girls tried to follow it. It was not their dog so it was not that disciplined with them (and there is a million reasons he would have run away). The girls didn't realise that, at that point, it was so dangerous to leave the trail or whatever is the main path they were following. As they stopped looking for the dog, they check around them and realized they were lost (never being there but everyone seems to say that it is so easy to get lost in the place, so wild, raining, surrounded by enormous trees that hide the light, everything looking the same). I believed this happened a few hours after they left, and that's the moment they did their first 911 call. That fact that they didn't bring that much food and water + the wild environnement may have not helped as well : they were dehydrated, panicking, and every of those conditions did affect their logic, their sense of direction and their capacity of thinking correctly. - They decided to go the wrong way and that was it : they were definitively lost. The sad thing is they certainly weren't that far at this point. But they decided to follow the wrong direction. - They survived that long (6-8 days for Kris, more than 10 days for Lisanne) cause they managed to find water somewhere (rain, trees, rivers). The fact that this water wasn't healthy, once again, took part of making them weak and may explain some bad decisions, accidents (Kris may has fell), things that didn't make really sense ("why they didn't/did do that" etc). About the photos : it can be to check where they were going, to do some lighting to indicated their presence, to scared animals, by Lisanne to remember the place where Kris died... They tried to call, to reach a signal, to make some lights, to do a SOS sign... They were (logically) panicking and moved a lot (to much : it did tired them even more and tend to make them unreachable). On April 3 they could reach a signal and having a 1 or 2 sec call with 911. At that point, they should have stay there as the signal may have came back. But once again, we are not in their heads, they were confused, tired and panicking. - Kris passed away first. It can be plenty of reasons : accident, dehydratation, animals, intoxication... Some clues tend to indicate that she felt from a bridge they were attempting to cross (the blood on her head, the photos and the piece of her clothes we may have found near a bridge.. / always saying "may" 'cause as I said, the informations about their remain and their belongings that were found are not so trustworthy). Did she died from that accident ? We don't know. Analyses of the phones shows that April 6-7 is definitely a turning point : it is certainly the day Kris has passed away. We can see that Lisanne tried to used Kris' phone but didn't have the pin code; plus the 77 attempts to use the phone shows that she was definitely panicking at this point. Something tell me that if Kris was slowly dying, she would have gave Lisanne her pin code. If she didn't, it's probably because she died suddenly. Some people are wondering why she would try to get into the phone when she can still call emergencies numbers with an unlock phone... I think we shouldn't even wonder why. I mean, come on ! The poor girl is an a terrible situation, her friend has died, she must be very weak, not really aware of what she is doing... She may wanted to unlock the phone for plenty of reasons as : check the photos, looking for a signal, having access to some infos... Anyway, Lisanne took Kris stuff with her and keep walking (that's why we found Kris' stuff in Lisanne's bag). - The battery of the phone died on April 11. Lisanne may have survived some days after that, but not a lot. She was alone, with no lights, weak and confused, certainly injured... if she didn't died "naturally", animals probably killed her. I read and article in which an expert said that, judging by her foot we found in its boot and the place where we found some of her remain, she may have died falling from a cliff she tried to climb, probably to be able to look from the top of it to find her way. I personally think she did amazing surviving that long, alone, and it probably would never have happened if she was not the athletic girl she was. - I personally think animals eat (or kill) both of them. That would explain why most of their parts are missing, and why their remain are kilometers away from each others. It explains as well the fact that the bones are not in the same conditions : they were not eaten by the same animal. Everybody is freaking out on the bleached bone but two things can explain that : it may have been eaten by a snake (this theory is confirmed by experts, bones rejected by snakes may be bleached and that would explain why most of the body is missing) or it may be due to a long stay under the sun. - About the intact bag : Lisanne died falling from the cliff. Days after, a foot she broke falling get detached from her body (nothing weird about that... just check google), a animal came, ate her, and let the bag and the boot where it was. I know the indigene girl said that it wasn't there the day before... but we shouldn't based an entire theory with the saying of one people. She may have done a mistake, or an other indigene found it before, moved it, then realised that he may be involved by mistake in a crime and left, leaving the bag at an other place. - About the other bone(s) and finger print(s) : sources do not agree on this. They MAY have found some "strange DNA or fingers prints" on some of the clothes-flesh-bones of the girls... Nothing sure. Be careful with that bit of information... Animals DNA, man finger print ? The bone they found could be from someone else as this terrible story is nothing but rare (people, especially western people, are missing (and found dead) in south America quite often...). And don't forget that people lives in this wild place (local tribes). - About the Panama's authorities hiding stuff : then again, nothing strange about it. Countries like south America's tend to make a secret about everything. They just don't share what they find. I remember a lot of stories like that. It feels like they don't always want to cooperate with western countries, even if there is nothing to hide. They could also be ashamed that : western people died while they were in holidays in the country (bad for the tourism) ; or that their attempts of finding the girl didn't succeed. They could feel responsible as the police were alerted April 2 and they didn't do much to find them at this point. - I feel like if they has been taken by strangers, drug cartel of others types of foul play, things would have been different. Every bit of information we got tend to show that Kris died first and Lisanne survived a few day afterwards, using the phone and taking photos. How can this could happened if there were some kind of foul play involved ? I think I said it all. We shouldn't forget that these girls were totally confused, panicking, weak and dehydrated. So we shouldn't try to understand every moves they did. One thing is sure : they lived hell before they died. I can't imagine sleeping in this dark, scary and wild place, with any provisions, feeling yourself being weaker and weaker... What about this poor Lisanne who lived at least 5 days alone knowing her friend has died. Have you ever sleep in a forest by night ? It is scary even if you are in a safe place. I feel so bad for them. May they rest in peace now. By the way, you did an amazing work in this video, as usual.

I've done a certain amount of reading and study on this and what is the most interesting is that both of the boys they swam with the day before they left on the hike turned up dead over the next 60 days one being run over by a car and the other drowning. The cab driver who drove them to the hike also it turned up dead.combined with the fact that their pack was found in pristine condition nearby an Indian village All point to it being a conspiracy, probably involving a drug cartel. Clearly,What caused their deaths had to have happened prior to the day of the hike which is why the two boys turned up dead. I can think of a number of scenarios but unless we get further information it's difficult to tell which one is true.What kind of sounds like someone wanted to do away with them but someone else thought there might be severe consequences if they did.The key probably lies with the Indian woman who found their backpack in pristine condition a few weeks later she probably knows somebody who knows somebody I would guess.

People need to realize that as a Caucasian tourist you can often be viewed a rich Westerner. A target. How many cases do not get reported for fear of losing tourist dollars. My step daughter was allowed to go on an extended trip to southeast Asia with her boyfriend at 18 years of age. I was absolutely horrified she was allowed to go. No problems in the end but as far as I'm concerned they were just lucky. People are desperately poor in other parts of the world. You never know what could happen.

1(a). How do we know the tour guide was supposed to give the women a tour on day 2? We only have his word on it. Could he have offered to guide them on the day itself then did whatever he may have done with the women on the way down from the peak? 1(b). Why would this guide go straight to the police when the women supposedly did not turn up on day 2?! Why so extra concerned? The normal reaction of a tour guide where clients don't turn up is to try and contact the clients - if they don't answer or reply, just shrug it off as lost business and move on. 1(c). How convenient that this same guide manages to help locate the bone fragments of the women. 1(d). Again, how convenient this guide owned (still has?) a ''ranch'' near where the women's bones were found. 2. The matter of the remains of the women does not make any sense considering the environment of the jungles of the area. The average temperature in Boquete town is highs of 23°Celcius and lows of 13°C. It would certainly be even cooler in the jungle - remember this is not a jungle at lowlands where temperatures are consistently above high 20s Celcius and decomposition is very rapid. Even if the corpses of the women were picked on by scavengers, the slower decomposition would still have left some flesh/muscle (plus the clothing worn by the women) to hold together some of the bones, thus leaving a good part of the skeleton intact. So why were only a few bone fragments found scattered about? Where were all the large bones and the skulls? Perhaps some would rationalise that the heavier bones sunk to the bottom of the river and the local authorities could give an a** to do a search?? Further, assuming the last survivor moved along and died further away from the friend, how in the world did their bone fragments mingle together??? 3. The backpack. Any adolescent and older would know that a backpack left in the jungle for 2 months would be soggy, muddy and probably damaged and likewise any contents within. Even if the backpack had dried after a spell of no rain, the camera and handphones would have been damaged to the extent that no data could have been retrieved. If the camera (with data stored on a card) somehow survived the rain and mud, surely the handphones would not have? Seems like the backpack was stored indoors all the time and tossed out just before they were found. .... just a few of many unanswered questions from a very badly investigated case, not to mention poor search and rescue effort at the outset.
@mynameismyname83665 жыл бұрын
Do we know for certain the tour guide is the only source of information on this? Did the girls mention anything to the host family or did Kris write anything in her journal? Also, I was under the impression that the girls rejected the tour guide on day 1 because he offered them an overnight stay at his ranch house, and they never had a planned trip with him. You might be right though that none of this happened at all, and that the girls either accepted the tour guide's offer on day 1 or he just stalked them from the start of the trail.

Then when they got there, this was brushed off and the administrators acted like they knew nothing of this. It's very suspicious and was never investigated - or at least no investigation of the school has ever appeared in coverage of this case. This was what left the girls wandering the town with nothing to do, waiting for the school/charity/NGO to get back to them, and no real connection to the place. They wouldn't even have gone there otherwise. They weren't just 'tourists.' In a small town that kind of information would travel.

The creep then murdered them and dumped the bodies in his preferred location. After the bodies decomposed he disposed of larger bones to make it more difficult for any forensics evidence to be collected. I find it way too suspicious of how close they are to the tour guides Ranch and the fact he found the bodies.

This is a great video about this case! It's one of the most interesting and terrifying cases ever to me. It feels like there is so much evidence but all of it brings up more questions than answers. The theory of the girls getting lost and suffering an accident(s) and/or dehydration/starvation would make a lot of sense to me if it weren't for the strange circumstances surrounding the discovery of the backpack and bones, as well as the fact you pointed out that it would have been difficult for them to get lost once they'd reached the Continental Divide. Given the fact that the woman discovered the backpack dry and packed neatly with both girls' belongings, including their working phones and camera with a possibly crucial photo deleted, convinces me that foul play was almost definitely involved. How could the backpack have ended up on that riverbank completely dry and undamaged? It could not have been carried by the river or an animal, someone had to have placed it there. And why were their bones found among the remains of three other people? It could be a coincidence but that seems unlikely to me. Personally, I think the most likely theory at this point is the one about someone following them up the trail, forcing them to hike into the jungle to get away, maybe with the thought that they could find another way back to Boquete. I suspect it was probably the creepy tour guide, especially since their remains were close to his ranch, but who really knows? Maybe he kept their larger bones and some of their possessions as trophies, and that could explain why those were never found. It's difficult to explain the decision to leave cash and valuable devices in the backpack and place it near a settlement, though. The phones and camera, aside from being monetarily valuable, were filled with evidence (albeit unfortunately inconclusive), so if the perpetrator didn't want to be caught, it doesn't make a lot of sense to leave them. And of course, it would seem odd for anyone to leave the cash. It's possible the perpetrator wanted to toy with investigators or something like that, but I'm not sure, it's just confusing. I think the photos of Kris with the "unsure" expression corroborate the idea that someone was stalking them that day. Perhaps they didn't notice it until then, considering their earlier photos seemed normal and carefree. I think it's possible that the first emergency calls were in regard to this person as well, since they were made only hours after the hike began. They might have tried to contact emergency services before giving up and deciding to flee into the jungle. Then, if the stalker didn't find them first, they probably found themselves lost and one or both of them sustained injuries, prompting more emergency calls. My best guess about the nighttime photos is that one or both of the girls were trying to find their way in the dark, and the strange photos of plastic bags, etc. were evidence of them marking their trail. Possibly the stalker had found them by this point and they were attempting a hasty escape during the night - I don't know why else they would try to travel in the pitch-black wilderness, other than maybe delirium/desperation. This whole case is so bizarre and heartbreaking. I hate thinking about what the girls' last days must have been like, and the desperation they must have experienced making all those emergency calls that didn't get through.

That, or the killer(s) confronted them after the dog ran off. Or, for that matter, dogs won’t actually protect strangers they have no attachment to. If the dog sensed danger, it would have scared him away. There are even dogs who won’t protect their closest human friend, not out of malevolence, but it just isn’t who they are. In “local” places, dogs like German shepherds will be trained to protect a *place* or livestock more than the people. Shepherd dogs were bred and trained to protect flocks, and with that, the place where they were kept and/or the house of the agriculturist, against theft and hungry predators. It is still pretty much the same in small towns and villages all across the world. A dog raised and trained like that won’t feel attachment to strangers, at least not enough to want to defend them. Besides, you can get a dog away from yourself with distractions too - they’ll gladly leave you to yourself if you give them food, and might even trust you more than the other strangers who took you on a hike. At the end of the day, they’re sweet fluffs of animals, and the way to their hearts often goes through their stomachs 😄
