I recently tried the glitchedworlds hack on the SMB1 ROM, and I also found out about the death logic in cloud worlds that you found in this stream. If you look, it also keeps the timer going. My guess is that this was the easiest way for them to override the "falling into a pit" logic that exists in all other parts of the game.

12:00 When you die, the cutscene isn't playing again in 1-2 for example. Same thing all the time! (Btw, glitch levels sometimes change because the level data is read from out of bounds, also for example the level that resembled to 1-1, basically it was 1-1 desynced, and then synced up again, but the enemy data is again read from OoB, and it just spawns random firebars. The only thing that's actually right is piranha plants, because any pipe spawns a piranha plant when loaded.)
