Loved: Shot at max range to force them to break. Vertical scissor to cut inside TIE's turn (F4 vs Mig17). Horizontal scissors of Xwing trying to force overshoot. Working in teams with wingmen. Some of the tactics are even more valid for those who played Xwing sim (like that Y-wing rolling to stay alive).

Wow, the creators really did their homework. Since most people probably won't notice, the maneuvers were all actual Energy fighting manaeuvers, tactics from WW2. First she goes into a vertical turn, which is what you do when the enemy turns faster than you and you cant reach him. Then we saw the scissors maneuver, designed to make an enemy behind you overtake you while being harder to hit. The Y-Wing scene also nicely portraied the usual tail gunner problem. I was extremely impressed. Also, visual quality of props, cockpit scenes were A++, but even the spaceship scenes were very good, a quality level that doesn't feel "amateurish".

Thanks for noticing! Yes a lot of homework went into this & the goal was to portray a dogfight not as one would see in space, but as one would see in real life. I don't know why you liked this so much. I thought the entire team did a great job in production and post production, sure. But they failed to present the most important part of any movie: a compelling story with compelling characters. This is basically a scene with no context (the text crawl contextualizes what's happening in-universe, yes). There's no reason this story SHOULD be told. It's a great demonstration of presentation. It looks and sounds and tastes like classic original trilogy Star Wars. Certainly more-so than the prequel trilogy. But it doesn't FEEL like Star Wars, because it has no subtext. It has no heart or soul, really no clear protagonist or point of view. I hope the creators understand that I'm not suggesting THEY have no heart and soul. They've just seen the trees, and done a great job at recreating the trees. But they haven't shown us the forest. Just trees. That said, a thought provoking moment happens toward the end of the film, when our Y-Wing pilot suggests that "Commander Skywalker has a way of finding things..." That statement alone suggests some interesting story ideas. I don't need any Luke fanfilms, that's for sure, but it makes one wonder, what is the point of view of rebel vets AND/OR rookies when it comes to this farm boy that came outta nowhere, buddies around with this Princess who has taken up an entirely military rank within the Rebel Alliance forces, and seems to be lucky as hell. And claims it's because he uses The Force, an ancient hokey religion that nobody really takes seriously anymore (despite what the Prequels might have told you). Like, that's gotta be a real trip. What is the journey of an atheist to a believer, or to somebody who has no supernatural abilities at all? Those are some questions that make for an interesting exploration of story. There are no bigger questions or character arcs that justify the challenges these characters go through. It's just very well composed and edited security camera footage of a real life event, no meaning, no purpose, no subtext.
@RogueSharkPictures6 жыл бұрын
We understand what you are saying, but we think it's a bit unfair to demand that a 9 minute short tackle big ideas that only a feature length film, or even a trilogy of feature length films, can handle. For us, this was a small glimpse into a much larger universe (the first scene of a much larger story) and if we had the resources to expand upon these characters, and the direction we want to take them, we would do so. We have all kinds of ideas for Star Wars features and TV shows, but until Lucas Film decides to pluck us out of oblivion (we're not holding our breath), this will have to do. Sorry we couldn't do more, but at least it's better than nothing.

All of those game are Star Wars 'sims' so prepare to learn a lot of controls for things like power management, angling your deflector shields, setting your cannons to individual, dual fire, or quad fire, etc. But you get to fly missions for the Rebel Alliance or the Empire, if you download TIE fighter. And you get to pull cool maneuvers like the one Renegade One pulled at 4:50 I actually grinned hugely at that since that very maneuver (pull up, cut your throttle, and roll onto the enemies tail, and show him what four Taim & Bak KX9's can do!) has saved my virtual life several times.

X-Wings didn't exactly look sturdy in this, the one hit going down immediately. The shield generator did no good. Maybe it wasn't even working. The maintenance crew might have been slacking and falsifying reports. It's not like the Rebellion could acquire the best professionals anyway; it's a dangerous life with few rewards. Feeling like you're doing to the right thing might not be enough after long years of desperate fights, constant fleeing, and watching your friends die. It's not like the Rebellion could have run proper academies to train qualified technicians anyway. They would just accept whoever appeared willing. At least they had droids. But no droid factories.
@ClingyCrab5 жыл бұрын
@Herra Käärme The hit on the X wing seemed to be around the fuel/engine, and I don’t remember them ever visibly converting any power to the shields before the TIE’s showed up
@BrySkye4 жыл бұрын
That would assume they were flying through an asteroid field with their shields down. The only real reason to divert shields to power is for pure speed, which wouldn't fit the flight profile either. The more logical explanation would be that the forward shields were being reinforced at the cost of the rear shields for the sake of any stray asteroid (just like during the initial phases of the DS trench run) and they didn't balance them out after being engaged. But the more likely answer is that its just for dramatic effect. The effectiveness of the shields is based on how convenient they are for the story being portrayed. Fans can be just as guilty of this as anything official.
@RogueSharkPictures4 жыл бұрын
@@BrySkye Yes, it's for dramatic effect, as the story must always come first. Video games make shields very powerful for a better gaming experience. However, our goal was to emulate the original movie, in which shields were very ineffective. Case in point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3vCkJtniNyqo6M

I really like the way communications are done in this film. They're short and to the point, and if I'm not mistaken they take cues from real life communications. ".310 at 50," "Contact, two TIE fighters, low, 300 moving left to right." The first callout reminds me of a BRAA, and Contact is a real term used here similarly to real life. I'm not sure exactly what information they're passing with the numbers (300 sounds like a bearing, I'm guessing 50 or .310 is range), but it really made the film for me. No theatrics, no BS, just essential information. This is better than 99% of real movies.

The Y-Wing has been long overdue for its glory! That it held its own in a dogfight and made good use of its turret is a welcome change from the movies. It's basically the Star Wars Galaxy's Ilyushin Il-2M3 Shturmovik!

Point well made! But to be fair, Renegade 1’s last line of the movie is “We owe it to Drailo,” who is Renegade 3. Glad you enjoyed!

Any chance of Grand Admiral Thrawn making it into a fan film? I still love Tim Zahn's Thrawn books, to see the character in a fan film would be great
@RogueSharkPictures4 жыл бұрын
@Victor Nikolai true, which is why the Y-Wing in our movie was never able to shake the TIE Fighters off her tail. Superior piloting and a rear-facing gunner helped, but ultimately she needed rescue from the X-Wings. That said, in ROTJ Y-Wings are seen dogfighting and shooting down TIE Interceptors, so we think the Y-WIng's reputation as JUST a slow bomber is undeserved. According to the origional trilogy, it's a capable dogfighter. Thanks for watching!

Epic, just epic!! Superb quality in general, but what buzzed me the most was the combat "choreography" Technical limitations aside - this was true fighter-craft combat! The scissors-manouvering of the x-wing leader vs. one of the tie's.... I couldn't believe my eyes, never thought I would ever see that in a space combat scene anywhere. Fantastic work, keep it up!!

Right on point with the BFM techniques! All which would apply IRL regardless of being in space or in atmospere/gravity. Based on what is "known" about the relative performance between X-wing and TIE fighter, I would NOT want to enter a sustained flat scissor with a TIE in an X-wing by choice unless I could see going in that I would have the ability to out-decellerate him within the first few crossings. You only need a few degrees angle-off and turn radius advantage to set him up for a reversal overshoot. However, clearly the TIE driver was gaining the advantage bit by bit with each crossover and was within maybe 2 or 3 turns of gaining the X-wing's 3/9 line. (Yes, I have done a fair amount of ACMI debriefing).

Wait... what?!? Competent, professional and impressive female characters; presented in a matter of fact style? Oh right, this is fan made, so we can have both female and male heroes without any overblown non-sense. Well done and very entertaining! Creators like you are likely the only real future for the SW spirit we have loved over the years.

Cool, it's one of those two-piloted Y-Wings with a gunner. Most Y-Wings are just one pilot with ion cannons, so I originally thought it was two Y-Wings seeing the two pilots, lol.

I enjoyed that, someone has been reading up about air combat, tha X-wing and Tie fighter were engaged in a rolling S manouver, crossing past each other just like the US Phantom vs North Vietnamese Mig air battles, it is detail like this that made the film so believable, well thought out, well acted, well filmed, congratulations !!
@barryrobinson10416 жыл бұрын
I though the same thing change the X wings and TIE fighters to F4 Phantoms and MIG 17s and you have the some of the actual air battle maneuvers.
@ianvirco58976 жыл бұрын
There is one difference, space hasn't got an up and down, so the X-Wing couldn't light the after burners and go near vertical to esacpe the Tie fighter !

I just happened to stumble across this, and I am so glad I did. This is beautiful. This was better than either of the new movies. This is everything I was hoping for with the new movies. This FEELS exactly like the original series. This is what the new movies should have been like. In fact, this could have been a great opening sequence to the new series, leading up to the discovery of Thrawn and company inside the asteroid belt.

This needs to be a big budget 40 minute tv series like the one they had planned a few years ago but were too stupid not to make! Time to wash your hair, brush your teeth and put on your best suit and head on up to LucasFilms and demand to be seen! Take a lunchbox and a duvet and refuse to leave until someone sees sense!
