Wendall, it is nice to hear from you and your Wife. It is good to know that you are healthy and made it through the pandemic. This conversation is refreshing and your company here very welcome. Thank you for your insight and Adrian, thank you for hosting this. It is like being invited to someone's home and having a warm conversation.

33:22 “Is there anything we haven’t covered that you’d like to cover?” Me: Um, yeah!! How about ANY actual details about the LRS+?? 🤦🏻‍♂️😆😂🤣 Wendell, bless his heart and god love him but directness, man, please(!!) Methinks the market could go Magnepan crazy if they just managed to get out of their own way and ramp up production. An entry-level LRS AND an affordable entry-level/mid-fi Maggie AMP that finally’s “guaranteed” to make the LRS sing compatibly, AND an affordable dipole subwoofer? YES, please and thank you. When? Is the only question. Otherwise, here! take my money

Thanks for this interview. Boy, Wendell sure can talk. I have an order for the LRS placed 2 months ago and it will be quite a while before I get them. When they call and ask if I want an upgrade to the LRS Plus, I will need more info and details on the upgrades other than the nice stands presented. $245 is makes sense for the stands but what other improvements are included. Likely still a bargain.

I can't believe this was a year ago and the sub hasn't come out yet. The LRS+ have a 3 month wait too. I haven't been able to audition any LRS+ in Austin yet but if they sound better than my old SMGa then I'll buy them sight unseen! Anyways, thanks for the interview. I'm a Maggie fanboy all the way so any info, review or interview is appreciated.

Excited to hear about the dipole sub, my 3.7i setup doubles as my home theatre speakers, and while the bass of the 3.7is is adequate for most music, there's times when I wish for more watching movies.

Wendel = Wisdom I'm guessing there's few individuals that can optimize and extract the maximum performance out of big dipoles in a given room. His wealth of experience is mammoth! As I've evolved in my audio pursuits since the 70's, both professionally, as well as home hifi, I'm more and more inclined to fully appreciate open baffle line source physics. The room's acoustic transfer function can be terribly corruptive. Both line source propagation, and dipolar radiation, help reconcile those negative influences of the room. No boxy contributions... it's difficult and very expensive to address this in typical speakers. Plus, the acoustic superiority is well documented in Linkwitz' life's work. Add in the advantages of a line source, and the result can be a powerfully effective window into the performance. I've pursued all the paths... In hindsight, the path of the satellite/subwoofer trend in the late 80's, and into the 90's, was an unnecessary deviation in my pursuit. Merely a "lifestyle" adaptation of hifi.... incorrectly suggesting small stand mount two-ways, supported by subs, can be the equal of the big box multi-ways. It can be outstanding, especially in imaging. However, the Achilles Heel was the power region, the two octaves between 60hz to 240hz. Despite utilizing high performance two-ways, believability suffered due to a lack of physical capability in that 60-to-240 region. All said, that Sat/Sub trend helped usher in subs into more mainstream numbers... namely, Velodyne. I was an early adopter of Velodynes, settling on multi-sub, nearfield arrangement in the 90's... only to discover that 25yrs later, multi-nearfield subwoofing is now becoming ubiquitous in the enthusiast communities! I've lost track of where I'm going with this(!) ... other than Wendel's points on line source power response, etc, are astute and everyone could learn a great deal from his efforts. I agree on his take on diffusion needs... more the better. But I prefer my diffusion in front of my absorption... ie., massive LF absorption, faced with diffusion. I mean diffusion is great, but LF decay times must be addressed... (which requires as much LF treatment as possible). I'll stop here... damn, rant over. Rick James; "𝘤𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦, it's a helluva drug"

What currently available amplifier? Well, I *suspect* the Atoll line would fit VERY nicely. Yes, they are made “offshore” - but in France. After successfully breaking in my IN100 SE (which seemed to take FOREVER!) I am very happy with it. It is, of course, different than my DECware SE84UFO but it comes far closer than I had anticipated. And it can deliver the power and current that Maggies need. I’d love to try the LRS+ with the Atoll - Wendell just needs to send me a pair for review! And Adrian, you should look into picking up the line - it’s an excellent entry point into audiophile class gear.

I'd buy the 20.7's hands down - - they're just a bit too tall - - I'm stuck with and in love with the 3.7i's (although my love affair started back with the MGIIIa's) - - so it's not that I wouldn't want the higher end model, it's that it's too physically big - - so anyway, I'm looking forward to the "condo's" and I hope I'm not waiting in vain assuming they'll be considered a better model than the 3.7i's.

I can confirm Wendell’s comments on the 30.7s being finicky. I am a Maggie fan since the early 70s. My first were 2167s. I drove 120 miles to Shelley’s Audio in Woodlandhills to hear the 30.7s and they actually sounded bad! I am sure it was the set up, a bad room and not well marched equipment. I am really looking forward to to the hydrid sub woofers to augment my 3.7i’s

funny she worked at 3M , since that was the whole starter for magnepan i believe ? rubber magnets from 3M and by the way its not a ribbon speaker please stop calling it that lets not keep mislabeling going , adrian is the reason why the LRS explode the way they do right now. its not innovation (and i dont mean that rude, i mean there is not an insane amount you can with the price tag in mind) why does the LRS need a good amplifier ? since they hardly differ from the SMGA. does the filter make it more demanding a good amp ? since they did not change all that much.

There is no sound system you can buy at any price that can reproduce the sound of a live concert in a concert hall, not even close. One reason is that most of what you hear live is due to the acoustics of the concert hall, its reflected sound that reaches your ears. Without that element recordings sound dead by comparison. The entire sound system is not designed to record it and even the most advanced surround systems couldn't reproduce it if the required signals were there. The problem is well beyond the current state of the art. This is a hard problem. Building the same sound system ideas over and over again won't get you any closer.

So, no real information on the LRS plus.... Is the main difference just the Magne-riser style feet ,or are there construction changes to the panel and crossover?? I use my LRS with a pair of REL "omnidirectional" subs, and marvel in their glory every morning! VERY interested in that Maggie amp.....looks like a Bryson. 🎶🤫🎶

Jeeze get to the point already 😬. I own the original LRS and love them, but this guy makes them sound like a cynical marketing exercise, just a taste of what you could have won but not really that good. No real detail about the differences between the original and the +. The stands look a lot like MagnaRiser’s Airborne model. Wonder if there’s a patent on those or did Robert work with Magnepan to design the stands?

@@martytoo I tried a few and was surprised that the NAIM NAIT XS3 sounded much better than the PrimaLuna EVO 400 (costing twice as much) and Pathos Logos Mk1. The EVO was very spacious but had no excitement. The XS3 just took control of the LRS. I haven’t liked NAIM in the past, too hard for my ears, but their new range is much smoother, more musical and still has that pacey timing etc that NAIM are famous for. I eventually settled on the NAIM Supernait 3 which drives the mids and bass much better. Better imaging, soundstage, scale. It’s only 10W difference to the XS3 on paper but the topology is different and I think the toroidal is almost twice the size. The LRS need a lot of current, and my basic understanding is an amplifier with a high wattage rating on paper is not necessarily capable of delivering high current consistently like the NAIM. Apparently HEGEL are also a good match but not heard them in my system. I use a single REL T5x out of the RCA left out. I tried the High Level option but the NAIM amps are quite sensitive to what is attached to them, and the high level cable option just choked the entire signal, like a muffler had been put on the microphones. My room is around 11ft x 15ft x 7ft and I have the LRS out in the centre almost.

I was the same way with my 1.7s. I wish I'd have given them more time to break in before I returned them. I think the panels just take some time to loosen up to really come into their own.

@@CobraChamp Well maybe they need time to break in. But they just don't sound right. This weekend they go on the yamaha cr-3020 and I'll hook up a sub. I'll also move them to another room. Years ago I bought a used pair of beat up Magnepans and loved them. Something just isn't right with these speakers.
@martytoo
@martytoo 2 жыл бұрын
How does the power need of the LRS compare to the CR-3020? Is that possibly the issue? The answer must be yes because you are going to try another amp - what is the level of power and /or current that folks think is sufficient? I'm thinking of buying these but I am not buying a $2500 amp to go along with what will now be $1100 speakers. We have a dealer locally who when I expressed interest in LRS or the .7 immediately tried to sell me the 1.7 model. He said an old Proton amp clone that I had would be a great fit. So his strategy would be sell the 1.7 and then worry about the amp.... I still would like to try the LRS. (14 x 27 basement room with only 7 foot ceilings.) And there will be at least 2 other systems in the room to play with. Still, my question is what do folks think are the best entry level amps for the LRS? Magnepan has said from day one that these need a good amount of power.
@cornstalk9367
@cornstalk9367 2 жыл бұрын
I’d say that’s not a great combination. Back in the day I sold my cr-1020 to power my new magnepan mg-II’s with a dynaco 400 amp and apt-holman preamp. You need juice to get the panels moving. And the setup should be transparent. A 44 year old integrated wouldn’t be my first choice in clean power. Try the vintage amp with some vintage box speakers for a better match or try out some newer components on the Maggies. Even using cheap speaker cables will degrade the sound. Good luck!

Anybody who has seen the LRS Plus knows that what Magnepan has done is just one thing: they haven't changed the panels at all. What they HAVE done is that they've blatantly pirated the design of Magna Risers' Airborne stands, then passed it off as their own design. It is wrong, it is immoral, and it is despicable. I'm disgusted.
