My mum had a drinking problem, throughout my brothers and my childhoods. Our childhood consisted of trying to cover it up while dad worked away. My older brother was 12 when he walked in to find her fitting because of withdrawal. Dad tried sending her to AA meetings always found her in the pub. I lost my brother in 2018, she got worse with drink after that. In 2019 she took her own life. We will never know if she took her own life intentionally or not. I will never understand how someone could choose alcohol over their own children. This song reminds me of her but it’s bittersweet. If you’ve got a parent with a drinking problem, hang in there because you may not feel it but you are stronger then you know. Even when you feel your alone in this battle you aren’t there’s other kids out there going through similar. We’re rooting for you, I’m rooting for you. You’ve got this.

Funny, I've been puzzling over this line... I don't understand it. Can you explain? I mean I get that the narrator of the song is saying this but...why would the subject (the person the song is about) be lying awake for the narrator? And why would the narrator be hoping that's not the case? And why is this situation so meaningful?

@@deandeck I think it's to say that the narrator is lying awake due to him being worried for Gloria's well-being. They seem to be mentioning Gloria's use of alcohol throughout the song. Me and my sister were given up for fostering after I was born, because my parents were alcoholics and couldn't look after us. My mom and dad were walking home from a bar, drunk, late one night and my mom ended up losing her footing and fell into a bog drain at the side of the road. She drowned that night. My dad died when I was 12 from lung cancer and other ailments from addiction. I spent a lot of time in the hospital waiting for him to wake up from a coma but he never really did. In this shot alone, you can see the beauty of Gloria peak through with the slightly askew black bar showing a slim window at the happiness she feels with her children. There is no pain, no addiction. This song exposed me to the Lumineers. I was driving through the Bay Area from Sacramento, browsing radio stations. I heard this song and saved it to my liked songs on youtube. Over a year later I am listening to it almost every day, and I like it more and more every time.

Can't wait to see them for the 4th time in Manchester this November. I've loved their music for the last 7 years. They remind me of my travels through Europe, the people I've met and the soundtrack of the love of my life, whom I marry next year and just bought our first home together. They are the soundtrack of all my adventures by motorcycle and they make me feel nostalgic for memories I haven't even made yet. The lumineers are simply magical.

This song helps me see the lie that I believed for years.. that it was my fault. The many nights I prayed and I still do. We are only in control of our own actions and God loves us enough to have mercy.

Amazing band! The Lumineers are amazing musicians and singer-songwriters, and it is extremely difficult or impossible to understand why a person would not like them. Honestly, I have not found anyone who doesn't like The Lumineers, even if they don't become one of their favorite bands. Still, there are all kinds of people and musical tastes in this crazy world. We must respect other musical tastes, even if we don't get them. The Lumineers play their instruments beautifully, their voices are raw and soothing, and their lyrics are real-life stories that people can relate to directly or indirectly. Many of their songs make one want to clap and dance; others make you reflect and feel sad, and there’s nothing wrong with it. All kinds of human emotions are covered in their music, which is genuine, honest, and good to many people and me. 🙂

Thank you for this song. I lost a cousin to alcoholism a few weeks ago. Family members found him. Other family members struggle with the disease also. It's nice to know that none of us suffer alone with these experiences with the people we love.

this song reminds me of my dad, my entire childhood/life he was a manulipitive, alcoholic, deadbeat dad. he would constantly verbally abuse my mom and i’d always have to comfort her while she was crying and screaming about how horrible he was when i was only 6 years old. i had to comfort her all the way until i was 14 and he eventually died from liver cancer when i was 15. eventually my mom admitted she was always too scared to leave him and i learned that he was also physically abusive

You were a parentified child. It's not a child's duty to comfort a parent. It's should be the other way around. Hope you are doing fine now!

Well I can relate to this song.. my mom was a recovering alcoholic, died bang in the middle of the summer holidays, right after we’d been on holiday. Turns out she couldn’t help it and went to the alcohol, which she just couldn’t take. And my dad is nowhere to be, so I’m now living with my grandparents. I feel terribly guilty writing this, but they’re more of my parents than she was. I will always love her and thank her for giving me such a good childhood, but she knew herself, I think. The night before she passed, she wrote a letter, saying that she wanted me to be raised by my grandparents, and they could give me a good life of what she never could.

Amber Louise I’m sorry for your loss and that your dad isn’t around at the moment💗. Also, you shouldn’t feel guilty about feeling like that, as long as you’re getting by and being taken care of❤️.

Eileen Fezza thank you, I really appreciate it 😊 My grandparents are really really lovely people and I’m really grateful to be with them. The loss of my mom will haunt me forever, but one day at a time, I guess. My dad isn’t around since he lost custody of me, which I’m quite glad of to be honest, I never really knew him properly. I’m doing as well as I can ❤️

Gloria, I smell it on your breath Gloria, booze and peppermint Gloria, no one said enough is enough Gloria, they found you on the floor Gloria, my hand was tied to yours Gloria, did you finally see that enough is enough? Did you know me when I was younger then? I could take the whole world with me I would find myself feelin' alone Heaven, help me now, Heaven, show the way Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh Gloria, you crawled up on your cross Gloria, you made us sit and watch Gloria, no one said enough is enough Heaven, help me now, Heaven, show the way Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me Every night away, every day alone Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don't lie awake for me Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh Gloria, will you just decide? Gloria, there's easier ways to die Gloria, have you had enough?
