Beautiful review. I love when you see these movies that we all love. I’m always anxious that you may not catch cultural nuances but you always nail it! FYI: witness required but not necessarily family. The courts are neutral in India and they don’t care about family approval as long as the couple are willing.

I think that is what sets them apart from other reaction channels. The depth to which they delve in wanting and trying to learn everything Indian is just amazing. Oh my absolute favourite film ever. It is so close to my heart. Ashoke and Ashima seem like people I know and have grown up with in my family. I listen to the Namesake theme very frequently and the tears just start flowing. The scene where Ashok takes Gogol to the water's edge and forgets the camera and says "You must remember we came to a place where there was no where left to go" To which Gogol innocently asks "how long do I have to remember it?" - it get me smiling through my tears every time. Then the scene in the car where Ashoke tells Gogol the reason for naming him Gogol and Gogol asks his father if seeing him reminds him of that accident to which Ashok replies "You remind me of everything that followed. Everyday since then has been a gift". Oh I could go on and on about what I love about the film. I have given up on requesting it now- I had been requesting it for quite a long time along with the Margarita trailer reaction request. That one got picked but sadly this one didn't. But I'm glad you did.

Same here. You always miss something more after it is lost forever. He was an amazing actor (feels weird to talk about him in the past tense). Because of the vulnerability he showed in his acting, his passing almost feels personal, like I've lost a family member. He draws you in without even saying a word. This and Namesake are my favorite Irfan Khan movies. Breaks my heart that we won't get a chance to see him in any more movies 😢

Relationship naming in India: It stems from local languages and the respect to elders habit. An unrelated female elder, for example in Hindi, would be called Maasi (mom's sister) and an unrelated elder male would be called Chacha (dad's brother). An unrelated old woman would be either called Dadi (dad's mother) or Nani (mom's mother), while the man would be Dada or Nana. This is out of respect with the intention to treat unrelated people with the same courtesy. Many cultured homes raise their kids to call their servants with the same nomenclature - Ramu kaka (another word for dads brother). Other relationship names for unrelated people or strangers: Bhabhi (brother's wife) or Behen (sister) for a same-aged women Bhai / Bhaiya (brother) for a same-aged men Tambi [in Tamil] (little brother) Maaji, Ma, Amma (mom) for addressing elder women with more respect or with more feelings. Most Eastern cultures have this system, including the Chinese. Translated into English, all these just become aunty, uncle, grandma, grandpa, brother, sister without the subtly or the specialness conveyed by the regional word. Nevertheless, that's how it's translated. :)

For me this movie was about loneliness. It doesn't matter if you are actually alone like Irfan or lonely in a marriage like Nimrit's character...the way the film captured that loneliness was amazing. And the simple exchange of letters sparked something in both of them that allowed them to reach out and connect to people around them. Beautiful movie.... It's a shame India didn't send this to the Oscars.

@@suryakantsharma3114 nope . He's got an old CRT TV unit. He watches movies from late 70's , early 80's when he and his wife were a young couple and she was a child. They talk about mp3 players and cd players but her neighbor still plays cassettes. Nawazuddin says in one dialogue these days people talk to each other in emails , who sends letters.. ila has a landline phone in her house, which we come to know of when she receives a call when her father dies. Irfans office is completely non computerized. So this story is set in the late 90's to < 2010 , when internet/email was a new sensation for young people. Mobile phones existed, but nobody other than a handful had them.

You guys will be shoked to hear this. Irfan Khan was asked by Christopher Nolan to play the character which Matt Damon played in "Interstellar". But as he had no dates available as he was busy shooting "The Lunchbox", Irfan Khan "rejected" that offer. In an interview with Time Of India Newspaper, Irfan said, “They expected a huge commitment from my end. I had to stay in the US for four months at a stretch. I tried to work out my schedule and suggested if I could shuttle between India and the US as it wouldn’t have been possible for me to be there for that long. I wanted to be here for The Lunchbox and D-Day. They couldn’t allow that. I don’t have a tendency to regret what I do, but knowing it’s a Christopher Nolan film, I can say that this has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve made,” Also. he rejected an offer made by Ridley Scott for the movie "Martian" in which he was about to play the role which was later played by Chiwetel Ejiofor as he was busy with the shooting for the movie "PIKU". On that , Irfan said, “I had committed my dates to Shoojit Sircar’s film, and no regrets about that. Piku is an important film in my career” Also :p ,he had earlier rejected Ridley Scott when he was approached for the movie "Body of Lies" where the role he was about to play was later played by Mark Strong.

Gully boy is Oscar choice for 2020 and this was for 2013 but because of some dispute they sent 'the good road' which is a Gujarati film. That's why everybody was so appauled on the committee's choice.

You don't believe me but Nawazuddin Siddiquie is very down-to-earth and very humble guy...he was poor and struggled a lot..he got success after he turned 40..he struggled a lot..but now he is the best actore india have right now.

No doubt that he struggled a lot and is a great actor, but I am not sure about him being "very down to earth" and "very humble", when he has complaints registered against him by his own family members and neighbours too...

I knew you would love this film but it still feels great to see how much you loved it. And yes Aunty ji, uncle ji, Bhaiya ji , didi are all very common ways of addressing even strangers. The cab driver, the green grocer, the liftman, the person standing next to you in a queue - it could be anyone and we address them by one of these names appropriate to their age and gender. However now more and more people are resorting to simply Sir/Ma'am.

There's a darker interpretation to the ending that either of you missed and I am surprised Korbin did too. in one of the letters to Irfan's character Nimrat mentions a woman who killed herself and her little girl. It specificly says, she took off all her jewelry and kept it on her bed side and then jumped off the roof with her daughter. In one of her final scenes she does the exact same thing. The final letter to Irfan can be seen as a kindness. She may actually very well have comitted suicide while telling Irfan that she's off to Bhutan.

It's not an official entry for Oscars from India. Every one thought it was a lock but the FFI selected The Good Road( A Gujarati Film) which is not nominated. Every one is equally frustrated about it back then. FFI has habit of considering themselves the only Intellectuals left in India and always underestimate Audience Intelligence. Personally I won't mind getting not nominated to Oscars as long as India submits their absolute best above personal preference of FFI.

The thing about civil weddings in India is that there is a provision to avoid elopement. Every wedding has to be declared a month ago on the notification board of the municipal office. However, the actual witnesses can be any adults. Much like the witnesses at the signing of a will. It is more like a legal thing than a family thing.

No Korbin, people wouldn't be much confused because we 'mostly' call older, unrelated ladies as aunty (we don't call elders by name) If blood related, every type of aunty has a different term or name in India(based on language of course). Example in north: mom's sister= maasi ji, dad's sis= Bua ji, Mom's bro's(Mama ji) wife= Mami ji, Dad's bro's (chacha ji) wife= Chachi ji. In India every relative will have a different title.
