The battery health on my M2 Max is still 100%. I actually recorded talking talking about this, but because I was rambling, I removed it. This computer sits at my desk basically always so it doesn’t cycle. Also, macOS keeps the battery at 80% charge when always plugged in.

While some aim for the M3 Max just for the latest tech, I ordered the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 16" with 36GB RAM and 1TB. It's geared towards my needs-web development (iOS simulators, tons of Chrome tabs, VS Code, Docker, etc.), along with Photoshop, Lightroom, and video editing. Making the leap from my trusty 2018 15" Intel MacBook Pro. Hoping I made the right call!

@@paulh6933 The single fan is only on the base model, the pro and max have dual fans, there is thermal throttling on the 16/40 m3 max but not on the binned 14/30 m3 max. If size isn't a factor the 16" has quieter fans, more battery, better speakers, obviously more screen real estate, so a lot of benefits - but for me it was just too big and heavy to the point of being uncomfortable to pick up - noticeably bulkier than the 15" - and it doesn't fit on planes/trains, certain tables in cafes, etc, much prefer the size/weight of the 14" and plug into a larger display at home / at the office :)

The reason you were experiencing stutters when encoding on M3 is because, unless you get the M3 Max, your memory is speed-bottlenecked now. The M2 series doesn't suffer this, but Apple introduced memory bottlenecking as a new "feature" apparently (lol).

When it comes to the battery discussion at 7:42, one thing you didn't show was the *health* of the M2 Max battery compared to the M3 Pro. The M2 Max is probably no longer at 100% like the brand new M3 Pro (those batteries tend to degrade fairly fast, at least up to 80%) That makes a difference in how long they can hold a charge.

I'd personally stick with the M2 Max facing the same decision. I've watched a bunch of reviews and there seems to be a consensus that although on paper (benchmarks) the M3 is faster by a lot, real world use doesn't produce the same gains. There was a reason Apple didn’t show much comparison between M2 and M3 Especially the Pro chips, single core sure is a little different but on multi core my 16” M2 Pro gets 14700 score and on average the 12 Core M3 Pro gets 15500 which is negligible. 3nm was overhyped a bit. On the plus side I think the M3 Max chips are great and have higher core counts now…Just the added cost

@SeanMather
@SeanMather 10 ай бұрын
This makes sense, and also a “yeah duh.” It’s like comparing a V-12 car from last year to a V-8 from this year. Just because it’s a year newer doesn’t mean it’s better than the older top of the line. Expecting it to perform the same is unreasonable. Now, for most average people they wouldn’t be upgrading from a less than a year old M2 Max to the M3 Pro, they’re upgrading from an old creaky intel based Mac. Or if they are, say like a production house that will benefit from an even 5% increase in performance, they’re going to go right to an m3 Max, because they need the extra power, money be damned. Just from the specs, it’s got like half the gpu power, so of course rendering video is going to take a hit. And if you look at your gpu use chart, the m3 pro is basically at the top consistently, basically at 98-100% (not real exact numbers, just to make the point), while the m2 max has some variation so it’s running at like 90-100%. The more time at 100%, the more likely you are going to notice a slow down. This is good to know, and if you can get a great deal on an m2 max, you should consider it. However, given that Apple typically rolls the pricing over year to year, and deals on old models are hard to find, you usually just buy the most current one. It’s really only tech reviewers, and first adopters that have this “must buy a new Mac every year but cost is a problem” issue. It doesn’t make much sense for a normal user to replace any m1 or m2 Mac for the equivalent model m3, and definitely not to downgrade tiers like this. They’re not that separated in performance or features enough. Now if you bought an m1 and you want an M3 Max, generally moving up the tier list, sure there’s logic there. For an example of what I mean, I use my windows laptop for normal use and gaming, and it’s 5-ish years old, but it’s working fine for everything I throw at it. Could some games be even better on new hardware? Of course, but it works well enough for my needs, and it’s not causing frustration that would make me go get a new laptop yet. My previous laptop was slowing down hard, was about 8 or so, and the w key had fallen off… and it’s still acting as my media server now, even though it’s like 12 now. That’s kind of the realistic upgrade pattern for most people who can’t justify dropping a few thousand dollars every year. Overall, it’s nice to see the performance comparison, and to learn about some of the real world limitations of the m3 pro, but yeah, there was never a chance that the m3 Pro would come out on top. I would send back the m3 and be happy with the m2 max. It’d be cool to see some comparisons on it vs even older hardware. But yeah, enjoy your m2 until you don’t anymore.

The m3 pro is a 6 core machine - the other 6 ecores combined take up less die space than a single p-core, they don’t count. So the max is basically 12 core vs 6 core, twice as fast.
@emiwan79
@emiwan79 10 ай бұрын
The max has 8 p cores not 12. And the p and e cores of the M3 are better. The thing that is making fcp slower is that the M3 pro has half the GPU cores. Which are much much better of those on the M2 max but just for raytracing and 3d rendering. For fcp are the same and are just half of the Max cores so that's it.

It is absolutely silly to upgrade every gen while also cost-cutting. In fact, Intel to the M1 family or from a base chip to a Max chip is ordinarily the only justification. The vast majority of consumers have no business upgrading every gen because it simply costs too much, and the ones that do have both money (lots) and interest buy the very top every time. Professionals are similar - it’s about how much money the machine makes you and how much it was in your way before. The stutters in Final Cut could just as easily be software optimizations for the M3 family that have yet to happen as a raw performance difference, but there’s a good chance the M3 Pro will never get the edge in export times. Personally, I will be keeping my M1 Max machine, as it solved every gripe I had with my Intel+AMD MacBook and my workload has yet to redline it. That said, I really like the exploration of the M3 Pro performed by High Yield, and though it has some regressions vs. M2 Pro, I think it’s a really neat chip. You can avoid letting the world know you are a peasant by buying silver every year - never goes out of style. 😉 If I may ask, what are your finances like, Jerry? I’m worried for you. The YT channel must bring you a lot of joy, and it’s cool that you get to talk about this tech, but maybe it’s time to change the pattern. :)

There are cooling pads with fans that sit under the notebook that are available in the marketplace which may help reduce the higher temperatures of the 14 inch M2 Max. Personally, I would only purchase a Max notebook in the 16 inch form factor due to the thermal issues that are significant when the CPU cores and particularly the p-cores are pushed to their limits. Thanks for your video comparison! It was really useful. I have Macbook pro 15’ from 2018 and last few months have been really bad. Video editing is almost impossible. Few months ago OBS stopped opening and yesterday Final Cut Pro stopped working as well. My laptop just keeps showing me error window ☹️ And iMovie is stuttering and throws out me from the app from time to time. Exploring internet is going ok on it though. I was happy with my laptop all this year so I wasn’t interested in updating it. I’ve cleaned storage, it doesn’t help. So I’m thinking which one to get, Macbook pro 14 in M2 Max or M3 Pro… I’m kinda tuned off by those stuttering in M3 Pro that I’ve had on my 2018 macbook so maybe M2 is a better option? I’m confused… And I’m also confused by the price of my old laptop. Apple Store offered me 200€🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ And different store 300€, that’s…🤦🏻‍♀️

An enlightening video, Jerry; it corroborates some in-depth web-articles I read with benchmarks that point out a cross-tier generational increase in performance for Apple Silicon; e.g M3-Pro is comparable to M2-Max (& so-on) for CPU based tasks. GPU tasks may be a different story which Pro & Max variants depart on considerably!

Are you shooting 10bit h264? If so then I suppose apple, like everyone else does not actually accelerate 10bit h264. Apple does not publish what specific codecs they hardware accelerate, but we know that nobody else in the industry accelerates 10bit h264. Meaning ironically that 10bit h264 is harder to playback than 10bit h265, as h265 10bit is hardware accelerated. You shouldn't shoot 10bit h264 if you can avoid it, but I know sony cameras have funky limitations like no h265 10bit in 30fps.

I picked up the 14” M3 pro last month from Best Buy for $2000. It’s definitely an upgrade from my 13” M1 MBP 16/1tb. The only downgrade for me is the storage. I now have 512 instead of 1tb. My problem is the fans. I have a game that I was playing on windows 11 with parallels on both MacBooks. The M1 got a little warm and you could hear the fan a little. On the M3 pro it gets a little warmer and it the fans a lot louder. Could it be the specs are more or was the M1 better in handling this game? The screen is a whole lot better on the 14”. I hope more people will eventually learn the lesson you just learned: You don't always need to jump to the most recent stuff. If your equipment works well for you, keep it and work with it until it's really worth upgrading. This is better for your wallet, better for the environment, and it will make the next upgrade in a couple of years so much more exciting! Also consider buying used or refurbished. Especially the Apple silicon Macs are so powerful that even now, 3 years later, the M1 generation is more than enough for the vast majority.

Ok call me Einstein but I’m seeing a pattern here. A lot of KZbinrs are FCP users and their most power hungry work is always video editing and export (naturally). In reviews they try to talk about everything - benchmark, coding, 3d, gaming etc (plus endless analysis of “black” - honestly who cares) but when it comes to the crunch video export time in fcp is what they really care about the most. And all but the M3max machines appear to be a little underwhelming in this department this time around, which is a bummer. It’s possible Apple needs to update FCP to optimise for the new chips, hard to say.

@@frostgodx hey thanks for the feedback! I was leaning that way as well. However, another comment in another thread mentioned how various software that I will be using doesn't use the P/E cores efficiently. Such that, let's say for example, real-time audio DSP plugins running natively only use up the Performance Cores and do not spill over into Efficiency Cores. So they said having 8P cores in the M2 vs 6P in the M3 would be the better option. But again, feels like I'm splitting hairs bc maybe 6P cores with the newer architecture would be equivalent to 8P cores on the older M2? I swear, I've had so many Macs in my life but this particular decision has been the hardest one to make! What’s really interesting to see is the fast charging though - you get the faster charger with the base level kit and it takes about an hour to go from 18% to full… That raises all kinds of questions about the longevity of the system, but I’m hoping Apple is still considering users that are on 5 year upgrade cycles when it comes to parts quality.

I am sill using the M2 Max so if you can get a good refurb deal, I highly recommend.

@@JerrySchulze the price is about the same. So you think I should go for the M2 Max in that case?

I have a intel machine, torn between getting cheaper m2 max or the latest m3 max. I edit big video files for web, sometimes for broadcast. Which would u suggest?

If it’s for work and you make money doing it get the latest and be happy for years. If you can get way more with a refurb M2 Max with say 8tb or 96gb ram that you can’t afford on the m3, get the m2.

Awesome stuff.. I am curious thou, did you get any feedback from Apple in regards to M3 Pro? My issue was video export with screen recording on, My base M1 MacBook Air proven to be faster with SR turned on, while the MacBook Pro was slowwwww and only in videoexport, while it was struggling although dead cold.

It's not about not needing the power; it's about having a powerful machine that you will not outgrow. I for one keep my computers until I cannot update them anymore. So in my case the more powerful the better since I do not want to outgrow it. If I was you I would take the M3 back and keep using the M2 max. And if I was you I would also have the mac studio ultra.

I've been thinking M3 Pro or M2 MAX myself and I keep coming back to the same core issue: memory bandwidth. Sure, the MAX has dual encoders and that's for sure going to help export performance in video. But the other issue is memory bandwidth. The MAX has double at 300 MB/s where the Pro is at 150MB/s. Now, both of these are great numbers. But if you're going to see any performance issues outside of exporting, it's probably going to be about data being shoved around in memory.... Quite certain.

Hi guys, I need an advice. What is better for the same price? A new 16" MacBook Pro M3 Pro with 18 GB and 1 TB or a 16" MacBook Pro M2 Max with 32 GB and 1 TB refurbished by Apple?
