Engine ticking from the exhaust / top of the engine is almost always loose camshaft carrier bolts on the S55. It can happen from factory actually. It happened to my F80 M3. You might be lucky. but me and many others have needed at full rebuild of the top-end. And friend of my was luckier than me, he did not need a top-end rebuild, but a lot of different washers, gaskets and new bolts. You can also avoid retiming by removing each injector wells and replace bolts one by one. There is a great post on the F87 forums. After watching the video: It is for sure loose camshaft carrier bolts. You need new crossbrace bolts, gaskets and possibly new bearings if they are scored (by the looks of the oil filter, you need them)

Same situation. BMW fixed my issur for free. But you should hear better for your engine. If the camshaft isnt tight properly, its possible to hear that. Its barely noticable, but its possible to not let these things happen, I heard mine slightly. Heads up rebuilding it though, keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻

@@eskimo330 If you have the tools it is no problem. However it is catastrophic if you mess it up or attempt it without proper tools since the S55 is an interference engine. It's pretty much the same as the N52/N55 (I believe it is even the same tool). Find TDC Cyl 1, lock the vanos and pin the flywheel just so you know u got true TDC (And look for the QR code on the cams) and pretension the chain. (This is oversimplified).

the thing u are describing is a mix of skill issue and bad luck. my guy expanded too much, if he is struggling right now that is entirely on him and not making a safety cushion if something like this happened. anyone with any amount of wealth should know about not sinking all of it into assets that can break. Hate to see stuff like this happen man but I know the feeling, my 2023 mk6 Gti had 78k miles when it blew up do to timing chain failure. Then we replaced the engine with a new one just for it to fail on the interstate a week later. I feel for you man it always sucks when something this major happens to your car especially when it has a sentimental significance to you.

Crazy for how expensive those M cars are they are known for bearing issues. And DYI the dirty timing and injections are from an aftermarket air intake. It lets dust and dirt thru to the engine in the name of more air/power. Chin up my guy.

If the car had misfires or if the solenoid you mentioned was bad you'd have a check engine light, + If the valvetronic system is failing (e.g., a faulty actuator motor, eccentric shaft, or sensor), it could cause abnormal valve timing or lift which CAN cause the engine knock, but my guess is its bent or worn rod bearings, but I'd say take the engine apart and take it as an opportunity to properly rebuild it

Hey Jake, I've seen your stuff mostly on your shorts. This video got recommended to me, but I'm not one of your regulars, much less a sub. I just hope you spot this comment! Just some advice that comes from lots of experience with BMW and rebuilding engines. Within the first few seconds of hearing that noise, I'm about 90% sure that's either a spun rod bearing or a piston slap (both can be related). A leaky or dirty injector can lead to this when it leaks fuel into the cylinder, causing the oil for that rod bearing to thin out. It was a very common problem in the N54, and even N55 engines. Remmy seems like a great friend, and also quite knowledgeable, but I would urge you to get someone on board who knows BMW motors and German auto engineering inside out. Working on these isn't the same as working on Japanese cars ;).

Before your write it off as a bearing, look into the exhaust side camshaft. If it has significantly more wear than the intake side, that could be your issue. BMW had a TSB for it on the earlier years where the cam wasn't torqued properly from the factory and backed itself out over time causing it to knock consistent with rpm. Mine started ticking at 80k miles, definitely wasn't as bad as yours though and minimal material in my oil/filter. Had it fixed through BMW for free.
