One thing to remember is that the Revolt was not just a war of liberation from the Seleucid overlords: within THAT war was also a civil war but between hellenizing Jews -- who wanted accommodation & acculturation with the Seleucid Empire -- and faithful Jews, who wanted to preserve their faith & culture. Americans can see an analogy with our own Revolutionary War, though the analogy is imperfect, of course. The 13 Colonies eventually sought independence from a larger hegemon, but there were thousands of Loyalists in the Colonies who supported the Crown & took up arms. The Battle of Kings Mountain is perhaps the best-known of these engagements. The point is that -- within larger wars for autonomy -- there were bloody civil wars between neighbors, friends, and families.

The story of the Maccabees is horrifying. Why was it taken out of the canon? Because its reality? It feels like we are watching it unfold again in our lifetime. The world wants us to conform and will stop at nothing.
@PapaGabo3 жыл бұрын
If I’m not mistaken, the Catholic and Orthodox canons are the only ones to keep the first two books of the Maccabees 1 and 2. The Protestants removed the Maccabees because they based their biblical canon off the Jewish Masoretic texts that were newer than the Hellenic Septuagint which also didn’t include them. I’m not sure why the Masoretic Bible (or other Jewish texts) doesn’t consider them deuterocanonical but instead apocryphal. Any one know more about the reasoning for this?
@KayramirCF3 жыл бұрын
I think it was more of them being conceived on a period when Jewish culture was very hellenistic they were not originally written in Hebrew but in Greek this and other books taken out of the protestant bible are like this. This I think is the reason those Jewish texts didn't have em they just had originally written Hebrew

Maccabees is in the Catholic and Orthodox translations of the Bible, just not the Protestant translations. So when she said that maccabees isn’t in the Bible, that’s not entirely correct. It depends on which translation you read.
@amd95922 жыл бұрын
The story of Maccabees and many apocryphal texts were removed from different denominations like the Protestants versus the Catholic and Orthodox because there was no hebrew text equivalent to be translated from, only Greek. the King James Version for example, would only translate those which had both greek and hebrew text to translate from and many had not print those texts to "save paper" due to the cost of print. The Catholic church includes those chapters as deutorcanonical because they still hold a lot of wisdom Like "Ecclesiasticus"or (the Book of Sirach), and the "Wisdom of Solomon".

Thank you for great presentation of the Bible's 'silent years'. Some other points I would like to add is that God actually protected the Temple when Onias was High Priest and a general tried to rob the 'tithe' monies and the Jewish people cried to God for help and 3 angels appeared as the general tried to rob the temple and they resisted him and whipped him to an inch of his life. So the general never tried that again. The reason why the angel's, who had restrained thieves and ultimately 'gentile' desecration of the temple, didn't restrain Antiochus when he showed up is because Onias' brother Jason bribed Antiochus IV with money for the position of High Priest and 'apostate' the whole priesthood and followed the ways of the Greeks. This is why God never defended the Temple when the abomination of desolation was set up. This pattern is also mentioned by Paul the Apostle in 2 Thessalonians 2 as it will again play out in a similar manner when the 'antichrist' appears and is defeated by the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also references: Matt 24, Mark 13 verses.

@Karen Stead if you believe what you typed you jnderstand that the new testament isn't compatible with the Tanakh and that it isn't an "old testament" because no new one ever replaced or superceded it. That's an important point to recognize if you're still seeking the truth about our religious histories. But most people don't have the wherewithal to go that deep into the journey.
@ZviJ14 жыл бұрын
@Karen Stead We Jews know that sacrificial offerings do not atone for all sins, nor are they irreplaceable when we have no ability to build and sacrifice on the big altar on the Temple Mt. This is why we substitute prayers for such offerings as written in Hoshe`a 14, especially on the yearly Day of Atonement. Don't presume to teach others about our religion, seeing as you're clearly not too knowledgeable.

You are right, it is cool. But, if there were no events of Hanukkah, then there would have been no birth of Yeshua/Jesus, the Messiah, 400 years later! Bravo! this was one of the best summaries produced. At the center of the disagreement, as Maccabees clearly impresses to the reader was a deviation from the sanctity of יהוה and the covenant ברית. This seemingly is a jewish issue as the Roman and Greek law would have bearing on the decision of the Sanhedrin. And this where the story gets interesting. As you mentioned, Judaism managed to succeed over both Greek and Roman mythology. But Judaism was already a divided sect beyond the Pharisees and Sadducees. The Birth of Zionism was the core of the Judaic split. This remain in the background of world history without nary a witness testimony for nearly two thousand years. Yet in 1897 it reappeared and this time is was going to fail. Hanukkah is more than simple commentary on a rededication of the temple. It was either fulfillment of divine providence OR it was an act of self determination. ( as we would see later on in history) Either way, this may be the only celebration in modern Judaic tradition where jewish agreement is universal.

Excellent video as are all of the videos in this series and on this channel. I recommend this channel to all my family and friends. One important comment on something stated in the video; the story about the oil lasting 8 days was made up and added later for political reasons. The miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah was always that G-d enabled the small number of faithful Jews to defeat the vastly superior foreign occupation troops and reclaim their country, religion, and culture. This obviously would not go over well with the large and powerful empires which controlled both the Holy Land and the Diaspora Jewish communities. Therefore Jewish leaders created the story of the oil lasting 8 days as the miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah. In the Books of the Macabees it says that after the Temple had been recaptured and purified, the 8 day Festival of Succot and Shemini Atzeret had been missed. So the Macabees celebrated that festival as soon as they were able. They also sent out communiques to all the other Jewish communities outside the Holy Land telling them to start celebrating this 8 day holiday as "Succot in Kislev (the Jewish month when Chanukah/Hanukkah is celebrated)." That is why Chanukah/Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days. For further proof of what the true miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah was, the blessings made while lighting the Chanukah/Hanukkah lights and the prayer "Al HaNissim ("On the Miracles)" all refer to the battles and victories of the Macabees and the reclaimation and purification of the Holy Temple, but there is no mention of the miracle of a single vial of oil lasting for 8 days. If that would have been one of the miracles, don't you think it would have been mentioned there?

Fascinating summary of these post Persian Empire events! Its also worth noting that while these people persevered in thier effort not to repeat the mistakes of the pre desolation era of worship, they were NOT re-establishments of the God anointed Davidic dynasty, of which the Jews heavily connected with the Messiah. The deep reverence for thier worship and attention to their prophets would set the stage for the rise of Jesus and Christianity. Christian theology connects Jesus's lineage to King David through his sons: Solomon, from whom Joseph would decend, and Nathan, from whom Mary would descend. Both of these connections made Jesus the rightful hier to the Davidic Dynasty.

Also the HIGH priest was supposed to be descended from a specific Levite, Tzadok since the tome of Solomon. By the decree of God: Ezekiel 44:15 But the priests the Levites, the sons of Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood, saith the Lord GOD:

Absolutely. The Hasmonean ruler Yehonatan, Yehudah's brother, should have brought a scion of the Zadokites back from Egypt and anointed him High Priest. Yehonatan made a huge mistake, to put it mildly, in omitting to do so.

And then came the Christians who set up their messiah figure as both king and high priest lol

The world's greatest army and empire? of the ancient world? by that time I doubt it, the Seleucids were in decline and were constantly humiliated by the Parthians and the Romans. Anyway, gaining independence was a feat worthy of recognition for a small nation.

Interestingly this holiday isn't one commanded by the Most High in scripture. It's more a cultural tradition rather than a direct commandments by Yah.

The 'Most High' commands the Israelites in Scripture to listen to their elders.

@@davidschalit907 Still a tradition of man, not Yah..hence Ashzanzi Jews holding Hanukah in a high regard.

@@manofvision No, 'the most High' commands the Jews to listen to their elders. Their elders saw the miracle that 'the most High' performed for them, and so they instituted this holiday. In reality, however, it is a minor holiday in Judaism.

@@davidschalit907 Anything that the Most High did not institute is a tradition of man period. Most High gives the command the man/ elder, the next generation is to keep the command.

I hope you have a "course" on the Jews during the Roman era and the Israelite Kings. From what I have read for a time a very good alliance between Rome, Jerusalem with Julius Caesar and other Roman rulers. Unfortunately, that came to and end because Rome wanted everything their way.....Multiple people in Israel started calling themselves the "Messiah" as a result of the Roman oppression, etc.

Actually, Unpacked has several episodes that cover this subject. For example, check out episode 15 in this series "Jesus and the Jews" which has an excellent historical review of the relationship between Christianity, Rome, and the Jewish people & community.

I think a series taking us through a year in the life of observant Jews is Israel (recognizing the range of observance) - the holidays and other traditions - would be very interesting.

Interesting that the story of the Maccabean revolt is not in the Hebrew Bible but is in the Catholic and Orthodox Bible
@UNPACKED4 жыл бұрын
The Book of Maccabees is in a collection of apocryphal writings often called "the external books". They are not part of Canon but they are recognized.

Fun Fact: Jesus Christ also celebrated this holiday 🙏 I think Christians should also celebrate this holiday and there should be a movie about it. The movie should be like a mix of the Ten Commandments and Lord of the Rings.

As a Roman Catholic, we learn about this in Bible study as well as reading the Macabees in our version of the Bible. I understand the Protestant Bible removed certain books from the Catholic text (although I humbly disagree), but I don't get why they remove the Mcabees. They are wonderful historical documents.
@jrr2480 Жыл бұрын
@@jkherold63 I agree that surten sections of the Bible was unjustly edited out, including the Mcabees book. I hope more Christian groups will learn about and understand this great pease of history.
