Great review , that tip on paddling position was really insightful. I understand why you focussed on feel but there are some features that could be highlighted so that your viewers have a better understanding of its advantages. Was really sad to read the comment that said the concave was too deep and should be avoided. We both know that it is the main reason for the great speed it generates. Also a mention of the thinned out tail would be helpful as it allows the board to bite in turns and stops that fish 'slide' that forces so many surfers into grab rail to control the board in cutbacks . Keep up the good work mate.

I feel like the Seaside needs better waves to really come to life. The Seaside will love that little reef of yours when it's got just a bit more push. I've found its a really fine line between groveler/Seaside/shortboard. I really like your analytical approach! Keep up the good work...

The first ever proper surfboard i got was a 5,10 fish(thruster) except for smashing the middle fin box at Fairy Bower reef next to Shellys, after 2 years the boards still great, in fact i think it was a smart choice my tutor getting me a a board that exactly my matched my small Celtic body size, better than learning on a foame at the time (dw i used a foamie latter on ) best choice ever teaching myself again to surf properly on a fish(when i was a kid i was a stand up bogie boarder!) so in relation to what you said in the beginning i think fish's are the best boards or people to learn on

Hey, I have two of these, both 5'8", one in woolite and one in the standard white. Love them both. I'm 6'2" 215lbs. The wool is a bit heavier and holds a little more in chop and bigger surf. The white excels in waist to shoulder high cleaner surf. When you get on the tail, they'll whip for surf. Two of my favorite boards

I find that the white one gets used more here in San Diego with our typical conditions (waist - chest, lots of good beachies and a few good points), but as soon as a good swell rolls in the wooly mammoth gets activated. I think it really depends on what bases you have covered with the rest of your quiver and if those boards are meeting their intent. All said you'll enjoy both for sure.

Nice video. How about discussing the differences between riding a quads, thrusters and twin-fins. Thrusters and twin-fins, although very different, feel intuitive to me. I've never been a quad guy and bought this board to figure out what quads are about. Apparently Machado never rode quads either and then came out with this as a quad only board. Seeing the reviews, it looked drivey and performance capable. I've only had one surf on it so far in shitty waves but I struggled to figure it out. Some points where I'd like to hear your opinion on Quad vs Tri vs twin: 1. Speed pump (I couldn't find that initial speed burst on my pumps like i do on my tri-fin) 2. Laying it on rail (I feel like tri-fins offer a better pivot and vertical approach in the pocket and i struggled to do the turns i wanted to do, i see quads as more of an open face cutback approach, unless you're riding quads for a barrel like Teahupoo) 3. Speed/drive (other fish style quad/twin boards I've ridden would increase in speed when cutting back towards the white water, i haven't felt that in this board YET. As I said, I've only had one surf on this board in very shitty conditions so I'm still going into it with an open mind, but I definitely noticed some big differences and my initial impression was that its not as user friendly as i had imagined. I had to change my approach a lot, more like a twin fin. Use a lot of compression in your core to get the board up and down the wave face. And use your hips and knees to kind of send the board out in front of you. This helped me with my railwork and turns. Also, it seems better to stay near the top of the wave. Don't drop down to the bottom of the wave until you see a section you want to perform a maneuver on. Definitely had a few moments of flare so I'm looking forward to my next session. Would love to hear your thoughts.

More simply what are the differences in body mechanics and approach required for the best performance out of 2, 3, 4 fin boards. And maybe even single. I know you did a twin fin video a while back but it would be cool to cover them all and get detailed about the differences in the way they perform and the way we should use our body.

Hey Matt, great questions and points you raise. I will put something together on this. I agree that it is not very user friendly / forgiving. But it is definitely worth putting the time into. It took me a while to figure It out also, it goes much better with some shape and push. For me it feels like it comes alive on rail with a slightly more horizontal approach. In saying that, it can still go top to bottom with a more vertical approach, but the wave needs to give you that opportunity. It took me a few weeks to get a good feel for this board and figure it out. You will come to love it, just give it some time. I am surprised that you haven't felt the drive of this board yet, for me this stood out early on.

@@HowtoRip I agree. I've adjusted my approach and took it out in some decent waves. When I get it right the thing absolutely flies. Faster than any other board I've ridden and feelings I've never felt on any other board. I got this board for this long, very sectiony reef point we have and it did not disappoint. The adjustment I made was A LOT more back foot pressure and REALLY leading with my shoulders and hips through turns. I think its important to do this on a tri-fin as well but it was critical on this board. I can do a lot with ankle movement and weight transfer on a tri, but with the quad Its more of a torsional pulling with your whole body for a smoother, horizontal, rail to rail approach. Shift your knees and feet forward so that your center of gravity sits right on top of those fins. The faster you go, the more pressure you need on the back foot, and the board goes faster, like their is no limit. It felt like there was a jet engine between the fins. The horizontal approach was key on cutbacks. A tri can do a more circular continuous carve where this is more of an elongated oval with a sharp apex out on the shoulder. I'm still struggling with backside turns in the lip. When I'd see a good section to get vertical and go to hit the lip, I'd get excited approach the section like I would on a tri-fin and would catch rail and fall. I'm thinking this could still just be a lack of back foot pressure and leading with my body. I'm having a blast on this board and enjoying the challenge of riding something different. I think my tri-fin surfing will improve from what I'm learning on the seaside. For reference I am 31yrs 68 kg/150lbs 177cm/5'10 and ride the 5'3 at 28 liters. I ride my shortboards at 25 to 27 liters. I bought the seaside a little over volumed for the sectiony right point i mentioned because it has a few very mushy sections and i just want to go fast.

The seaside or twice baked...I’ve been going back and fourth quite a bit. I want a board that will get me back out in knee-waist high surf....I miss surfing on the regular. as it is I only get out on hurricane ground swell or random nice swells in the winter with a 30L thruster or a 33L MERRICK POD. 5’10” 170lbs. I’m in the US east coast and from some of the comments it sounds like the groveler nature of the twice baked is a better pick for me. I’m failing to get into a lot of the mushy waves with the aforementioned boards so was thinking of going up to a 5’9” 37L seaside or a 5’7” 38L twice baked...any advice?

Good question Nate, I haven't surfed the twice baked...But judging from some of the footage i have seen, I think the twice baked might better in the super grovelly waves. The seaside definitely likes the waves to have some shape and a little punch. Good luck choosing, let us know what you decide!

Pierson Burbach I went with the twice baked 5’7” and I don’t regret it. First day I got it out it was mostly thigh, sets pushing waist, and I was getting more turns in than I ever had on my prior 28-31 liter boards. It’s exactly what I was looking for...haven’t had a chance to get out on bigger surf yet but I suspect it will do just fine. It felt completely different from my pu boards. As a side note...went with future controller fins.good luck!

How do you find it paddles in less than perfect conditions i.e chop, wind etc. Being so short does it have any glide? I have a Tomo Omni and in anything other than light winds and smooth conditions it feels like your towing a bucket around.

Aloha, I'm just wondering if you could help me out with a dilemma... I'm debating between the El Tomo and the Seaside surfboards. My level is beginner to intermediate (hopefully a strong intermediate by the end of the summer/fall as I'll be surfing almost everyday for the next few months). Not planning on riding huge waves as I'm not there yet but want something easy to progress on and that will help me get to the next level and won't be boring later on. Obviously as a low level rider, catching wave is the hardest part for me. Once I'm up, I'm up... I do a lot of kitesurfing and ride waves no problem with my strapless surfboard (I do get a bit more balance when I'm kitesurfing though as I can use the power of the kite to "fix" my lack of skills ;) ). Anyway which one of these two boards would you recommend? Mahalo

Hi I’m just moving over from surfing on a foam board onto a fibreglass board, when I went out the other day I found it really difficult to get the wave to actually catch the board so I can actually stand up in the first place (you know that feeling when the board gets picked up by the wave) is there any reason this might be happening? Hey Zach, it sounds like your new board is either either too small for you, or not buoyant enough (or a combination of both). I would persevere with it for a few more surfs, as sometimes it can take some time to adjust to a new board. But if things stay the same, maybe consider getting something with more volume = more buoyancy = more wave catching ability. Hope that helps and god luck!

5'8. 5'3 stock dim Go Fish. It depends on the conditions. For me if the waves have better shape and push, I will go the Seaside. If it is slower and fatter, I will surf the Go Fish. The Go Fish has almost 1 litre more volume, so that might contribute to why it feels better in those sort of waves. The Go Fish is still good in good waves however, but the Seaside lends itself to tighter turns.

Hey Paul, I think based on your weight and given that a 5'2 seaside will come in at 26.5L, giving you that extra 1.1L from your cymatic, I would go the 5'2. That extra volume will help you out in the smaller stuff also! Thanks for tuning in!
