The West got Sufism wrong. Stereotyped by orientalists as apolitical, peaceful poets lost in personal spirituality, they missed the warriors within.
In this episode of Stories of Resistance, we travel to Somalia to explore the incredible story of the Dervishes, a Sufi order that fiercely resisted European colonialism for nearly 30 years. Led by the iconic Sayyid Muhammad Abdullah Hassan, also known as the "Mad Mullah" by the British, the Dervishes fought for their faith, freedom, and way of life.

0:59 good thing that you mentioned "Mad Mullah" was a British name to denigrate him. Interestingly, it was actually given by the British colonial collaborators/ loyalists. They called him "wadaadka waalan." So there's that too.

What a funny thing, as a Kurd I can relate, the British did the same thing to us a year prior in 1919. Mahmud Barzanji a member Qadiriyya order of Sufis, the most influential personality in Iraqi Kurdistan rebelled when the British along with the Christian Assyrians and Iraqi mandate wanted to take our lands and make Fasial I our king despite the guy having any connection to that land whatsoever. The Kurds of Iran, Iraq and Turkey, or Kurdistan as it was know before putting our lands immerged to theirs put their tribal difference asides, and joined forces after the Jihad was called against the British. As for our "mad mullah" he was caught and sent to India by the British, but the Kurds still fought them with vigour, in an attempt they brought back the Sheykh from his exile so that he could convince the Kurds to lay down their weapons. But instead when he got back, the first thing he did was to praise them for their bravery and went back to attack the British and killed several of their officers and set up ambushes after ambush for them. But the local Assyrians helped the British to avoid them, which ultimately led to his downfall. He later signed a peace accord with the new Iraqi government, returning from the underground to the independent Iraq in 1932. It would take around 72 years of resistance until we regained semi-autonomi, and Kurdistan could get it's part back from Iraq in the year of 1992, in what is called the Kurdistan regional government. The reason was that Kurdistan has a large gas supply and the British and Americans didn't want it to go to the Soviets, so they insisted on not letting that area be open for other foreign powers to used. As of now the other three parts of Kurdistan is still in war for their autonomy, in Iran, Turkey and Syria. The guys in Syria have fought ISIS and regained their territory, and are now in talks with Damascus to gain the same autonomy as the in in Iraqi Kurdistan.

This analysis offers a thorough account of Somali history and underscores the noteworthy displays of patriotism by past Somali leaders. The resilience, fortitude, pride, and patriotism exhibited by this remarkable individual and his comrades deserve celebration and admiration; nonetheless, it is disheartening that some will distort it into tribal accomplishments or particular clan narratives. Those who propagate these stupid, ill-advised, misguided, ignorant, and unethical beliefs are dishonorable. Great work, sister!

That isn't correct. The colonial powers approached him on several occasions with goodies and he turned down all offers, even when he lost territory and was at his lowest. Anyone against his movement was considered an enemy of the Devrvish State and that's how the world works even today. That's why we have treason charges in our charge sheets today. Take note that Somalis wouldn't be Muslims today if he didn't intervene. That has alot of value to the Somalis and he deserves more than a statute.

Ethiopia did not colonize Somalia; the Ogaden region was handed to it by Britain in 1948 as part of European-imposed borders that disregarded the Somali people’s self-determination. Ethiopia’s control over the Ogaden was inherited through these imperial agreements, with ongoing international support to maintain the borders drawn by colonial powers, reflecting a legacy of European decisions rather than Ethiopian colonization. Similarly, France did not colonize Somalia as a whole but did colonize part of Somali territory, now known as Djibouti, ruling it as French Somaliland until its independence in 1977.

It’s actually tragic to see such intentional propaganda and misinformation being propelled. All historical records, (including our gabay’s) from SOMALI people who experienced the brunt of his atrocities and massacres completely oppose everything stated in this video. The mad mullah killed the most Somalis when compared to the British, Italians and Abyssinians gumaystayaal at the time. His massacre of my family pushed them from Taleex all the way to Berbera in which he murdered hundreds of nomads in ONE day. Gabays reflect the first time infanticide was committed was by him in which he would slash the bellies of pregnant women when they refused to give up their sons and flocks of sheep to him and takfir their husbands and kill them. Somalis, please read gabay’s. This man never went to free our people that were being attacked by Christian Abyssinians because of him in Ethiopia. He even killed notable Somali Calims and Shayukhs all over Somalia because they opposed how unislamic his actions were. If this was an anti-colonial and anti-imperialist movement by him, why were the majority of his casualties poor nomadic Somalis that were 100% MUSLIMS and not the kuffar?? To promote him is deeply anti-Islamic, please STOP pushing these lies SubhanAllah.

Sayid Mohamed Abdalle was not truly an anti-colonial hero; he was a power-hungry warlord. Much of his poetry focused on bragging, stealing camels, or insulting other clans. The main reason many Somalis regard him as an anti-colonialist fighter is that the dictator Siyad Barre made his story a mandatory part of school curricula and even built a statue of him in the heart of Mogadishu.

This video is profoundly misleading and contributes to the dangerous rewriting of Somali history. The portrayal of Mohamed Abdulle Hassan as a “hero” or a “freedom fighter” is not only historically inaccurate but also a grave insult to the thousands of innocent lives lost due to his actions. Mohamed Abdulle Hassan and his gang were not freedom fighters but rather violent warlords who terrorized the Somali population. Far from being defenders of Somali sovereignty, they were oppressors who engaged in robbery, rape, and murder, causing immense suffering to innocent civilians. Their actions were not aimed at resisting colonialism in any meaningful way but rather at advancing their own power through brutality and chaos. The British intervention was, in part, a response to his crimes against humanity, not merely an attempt to maintain colonial dominance. The narrative of him being a “hero” whitewashes the atrocities his gang committed and distorts history to fit a romanticized, nationalist narrative. The video also perpetuates the myth that Somalia achieved independence through violent resistance against colonial powers. This is categorically false. Somalia’s independence was achieved through diplomacy and political negotiation, primarily driven by Somali intellectuals and leaders who advocated for self-determination. These efforts were marked by a reliance on dialogue and international support, not by the barbaric actions of figures like Mohamed Abdulle Hassan. Romanticizing tyrants like Mohamed Abdulle Hassan does a disservice to Somali history and undermines the contributions of true Somali patriots who worked tirelessly for the country’s progress. By glorifying a man whose legacy is steeped in violence, the video not only spreads falsehoods but also risks inspiring admiration for destructive and divisive figures. Somalia deserves a history that reflects the truth-one that celebrates the efforts of its diplomats, thinkers, and peaceful activists who brought the nation to independence, not a narrative that glorifies criminality and violence. It is vital to challenge such distortions and ensure that Somali history is preserved with integrity and respect for the victims of figures like Mohamed Abdulle Hassan. Videos like this undermine the real story of Somalia’s independence and contribute to the ongoing confusion about its history. They must be critically examined and corrected to honor the truth.

How can you claim Somalia was colonized by those nations, but Somalia never existed before they cane along. Tell me, who was the ruling King, dynasty, or government that ruled all Somali people? When did the word “Somalia” even come into existence? Somalis have never in history been united as a nation. Somali clans always had different loyalties, despite having a similar language and culture. The world Somalia was invented by italia. England created Somaliland. Etc. To claim Ethiopia of all countries colonized you is actually hilarious.. who can even tell you all apart? 😂😂 it’s like the Igbo claiming to be colonized by the Yoruba.. stop your whining and cheap propaganda.

No one is whinning cheap propaganda, and we all know that Somalia existed way before the so called colonizes come to Somalia, AND we have a long history of greatness, and the word Somali come from our forfather Saamaale, go and read before you medle in our history. It also seems that you're a Nigerian, not that we have beef with you or anything, but leave us alone.

He was one of the WORST things that ever happened to Somalia and what happened to Somalia is partly his bad legacy ...don't glorify him...he wasn't an anti-colonial. he was a religious fanatic .. not deferent than ISIS... if Somalian truly know how bad he effected their life decades after his death they wouldn't celebrate him.

the guy who calls somalis "somalian" instead of somalis is trying to educate us, he is one of the best things that somalia had, you dogs cant even appreciate the man who basically saved our religion and united us ( made us more fierce and cautious ) .
