I've been a Bob-Ross fan since the early days on PBS. But he's a one-trick-pony compared to Bill Alexander. Even with a bit of a language barrier, he's still the master of the wet-on-wet method.

Back in the early 1980's I learned to paint wet-on-wet by watching Bill Alexander. I soon painted until my home had no wall space left and found a great way of expressing color, light and form. Many years later, I made lots of great oil studies which are on permanent public display... but my START, was made easier by watching Bill.. I still have some of his paint tubes in my sudio and the knife that came with them. Bob Ross has overshadowed Bill... bit I knew instantly that Bill was the first to bring it to our television sets. So glad to see this here on KZbin more than 30 years later. A fantastic teacher that I will forever credit! Thumbs UP! and thank you.

Yeah I think it was just that bobs voice was soft and people would listen to it even if they didn't paint, I find with my own painting Bob Ross is a bit easier to paint with, but when I'm up for something a little more difficult I paint with bill. Either way these two will be remembered for a long time as beloved artists.

Observing the style of this painter, I think Bob Ross learned from him. This man was the original in style. But Bob Ross surpassed him. He did not just paint, he INSPIRED. " " happy accidents, happy little trees."

When he added the grass and branches to the right side.... that made it just look totally like sun was hitting it. The contrast is so good in this one. Makes those shadows look super deep and the lights look really bright. i know he watered down the green with white to get it even brighter but if he had time he prob would pop a little pure yellow in some spots to add more color and a touch more brilliant green here and there. Crazy how he can get this done in 30 minutes. Big to small, let the paint brushes paint all those details in one jab. Brilliant.

@@AAlexanderArt I have seen some of his other paintings and he was very good. I think he began doing the normal way and spending way too much time on details so he created the opposite which many painters do in all mediums. Huge chunks of shapes then go in and refine it more and more. Who wants to spend 2 months on a painting? :) keep up the legacy! I love watching him do his thing while listening to that accent. FIRE IN! Oh God! Can't you see it? The almighty sky... ve vill... ve will..... takes some Alizaron crimson....... hehehehe and de magic vite..... oh..... dat's vundeful! Bill Alexander was a master at shadows. Not just the mountains having highlight color and a shadow color but shadows in the trees and the paths and the water and every part of his paintings. Bob Ross didn't have that. I am not criticizing Bob Ross because he was extremely talented. I am just saying Bill Alexander was the Original and number one MASTER of Wet on Wet.
@richartrod4 жыл бұрын
I watched Bill Alexander as a child on his original station KOCE-TV in Southern California back in the 70's and 80's, and discovered Bob Ross online in the 2010's. Bill was Bob's mentor in the wet-on-wet technique. Both had different personalities, different styles, different approaches, but they are both masters of this style of oil painting.

Memories from him on television, and of course Bob Ross. I had some friends start me painting after decades. First question, how long to oil paints stay good...answer for me was 42 years, I had to twist of caps permanently on a few but at least I did not have to start fro scratch on all my supplies. Thanks for a great tutorial!

How amazing, I hope to learn and put my own twist and imagination to the wonderful techniques taught here. I see a lot of talk about Bill and Bob. The only similarities I see between the two is the techniques, which many people learn. How to form trees, how to form clouds... So on. The imagination between the two is very different, two totally different minds, two different sets of eyes, and that shows in their paintings. Bob was a student of Bill, so it goes without saying their technique would be similar or even the same, but to me there's no comparison between the two end products. They were both amazing and I enjoy them both personally. Special tributes should always go to the original.

Bob Ross also did what Bill did in many many ways, unknown to us. One such thing was that Bill had already painted preliminary stock paintings, off-camera which he would glance at to use as reference to what he would be painting for the series. He does lead us on that he is being spontaneous with what he is going to paint, when in fact he isn't - but that is not to say he is tricking us. He needs to do this in order to maintain ability to do the show with the timing restrictions against him. Initially Bill was thinking these spontaneous things, when he paints his pictures that he is going to show us. With that said, the point I'm making here is that Bill paints even more impressively beautiful paintings than the ones we see him fling onto our TV canvass. What Bill wants you to take from these shows is the skillset and knowledge in 'how' to paint with the technique. Bill is trying to explain and show us the technique, which our hands need to learn, not our brain. It will make sense once you begin to paint :) God bless you Bill. I love you.
