The Magic of Bullet Writing #13: The "Death Bullet" Writing Trap

Many performance appraisals cite leadership level organizational results such as stellar grades on compliance inspections, Air Force-level unit awards, and other heralded organizational accomplishments. This bullet breaks the rules of the TOS Concept, Iceberg Model, and Faulty Lead-In, and is very similar to the Led Effort trap. You have to tie the action to the result.
The "Outstanding" grade during a compliance inspection cites a leadership level result. Unfortunately, the individual's action and impact are ambiguous. Therefore the assessment of this accomplishment should be scored as fluff, or a maximum of membership level, since the member was merely there when something good happened.
Writers are often caught in the "Halo" effect and want to attribute the significant achievement to everyone in the organization. They forget to connect the dots that demonstrate how the individual impacted the leadership level result.
Unfortunately, the ambiguous or membership level action does not make the case. In fact, the "Horn" effect provides another impression where the faulty beginning of the bullet places the entire accomplishment in a hole from which it can never climb out. Avoid the "Death Bullet" Writing Trap.
