I use a Summit Audio TLA-50 (hardware, not plugin), which as I understand it, is modeled on the LA-2A. It is a very, very nice leveling amp that I insert on the vocal channel while mixing live sound at an open mic I host. Couldn't be easier to use and it pays off big time in the overall sound.

Have been working with the waves CLA-2 forever, but also sometimes the IK Multimedia T-Racks white face... the only thing that can catch out the beginner with the waves one is that it switches on Analog noise (60Hz) which can bring up the noise floor dramatically.

One big difference with the paid version - lack of the high frequency side chain :) aka emphasis control. Many pro users know how important it is in some situations. So, thank you UA! 😁 But overall ua full version is the best for me imho

Try some emphasis / de-emphasis eq before and after the unit. It acts the same way as a sidechain filter ;)

@@TheAris621 Absolutly no coloring with a transparent eq (no harmonics) and both filters and phase response cancel each other if it has the exact same reverse parameters. You only affect the way compressor (or whatever unit in between) react to the sound.

Thanks Chris! I picked up the free LA-2A from UAD yesterday and then I went and grabbed the Teletronix collection since the price was finally right at Plugin Boutique. The 2A really works great on vocals and I plan to do the whole serial compression thing with an 1176 pretty soon too. Really quick: the UAD Essentials Edition is $49 right now through Plugin Boutique if you get this free LA-2A through them too. It's a "crossgrade" so you'd have to activate the free plugin first before activating the rest of the bundle. It's an incredible deal and that allowed me to grab the different versions of the LA-2A in that suite too (and getting $149 worth of Teletronix for $49 alone was totally worth it, let alone the $299 for Essentials itself).

The problem with everyone is that they’re caught up in the brand of plug-ins The magic DeathEye Mono and stereo Plugins From DDMF Are the best Opto Plugins out there Because they do the best job of making the vocal or whatever you’re running through it sit in the mix better From an engineering standpoint, they blow every other Opto plug-in away And I am including nebula and Acustica audio 😂 It’s just a really really good out of algorithm for Opto compression ITB

I have this UA version of LA-2A, but haven't downloaded. I've used the Waves CLA-2A. Funny how the ears work, the LA-2A I heard in recordings was likely paired with the 1176, and that is how I like doing it myself, 1176 into LA-2A. I'm not after much gain reduction as much as that sound.

Good tutorial. My question is: where would you use it? By this I mean if we mimicked real world use, would one compress each track individually and bounce each time to free it up for the next track; use multiple units on multiple tracks or busses; or as one buss that serves multiple tracks at once (which I assume would be a very bad idea)?

Funny I watched many comparison video’s and in all videos the UA came out not so great. Heard comparisons with hardware and all type of plugins. The Waves came out great out of all tests, but most people don’t like that company anymore. By the way we always hear the LA2A on vocals and guitar but it’s actually awesome on snares try it out, sounds killer 😊

Makes sense as compressors on drums tend to want to be slower (ie. longer attack, of course) and this would be good to preserve transients which some folks set to 10-16ms for drums. Whether toms or snares or kick, seems like it would make sense to try it out.

The hoops you have to jump through to get this free plug-in. Is it worth it? Genuinely wondering. I went most of the way, but stopped at having to install the UA Connect. I am not a UAD hardware user, and likely never will be. I have the Overloud version of the LA2A (and maybe some others similar, like SoftTube). So... is this plugin anything special?

The UA Connect is to activate and install Native Based UAD Plugins, so no hardware needed. It's free, so yes, it's worth it :-)

I was more asking if the LA2A plugin was worth the hassle based on the merit that it might be an exceptional plug-in or just another LA2A emulation in exchange for your info for marketing. Hi there, if you have the UA Desktop application installed. You’ll notice this free plugin is listed separately there as a tube compressor from the Teletronix Leveler collection. I am certainly no expert by any means and totally brand new to the UA platform. But, that would mean it is different from the rest of the LA-2A’s. They each sound different to me. I just used this particular one on my Martin acoustic and some vocals for a pop rock song and it sounded pretty amazing.

The Magic for me is the way it reacts to a signal, and the tone which is unique to the LA2A, and that is comparable to the model it was modeled after. It's one of the best plugin versions out there. Of course, even if it's very close, it will not be 100% the same, and that's normal, and ok. Most people wouldn't probably even notice the difference, but some of us might, and that doesn't mean one is better than the other, if that's the case...just slightly different within the same ball park. If I had one with me, I would make a comparison video, but the question is, is the difference between the 2 is worth a difference of $4500? There's no right or wrong answer to this question, just a personnal preference. But can't go wrong with FREE, as far as I'm concerned :-)

@@mixdownonline I guess even the boxes aren't the same as eachother due to analogue-ness! Transistors built to a standard with tolerances and margins for specs mean everything has slight variation. I have heard of old engineers having their favourite box in a studio of identical models because it had a different sound.

Thanks for your video, I tried to get the plugin for free. Unfortunately it is so complicated that I abandoned the attempt. You have to create an account on several sites, enter your ALL data, confirm several mails to get the key - THEN - you have to install several programs to download the plugin at all. NOPE - That's cheating, my data is worth more, I just download it via alternative sites and done. This is way too complicated and the price - is anything but free -.
