I want to dismiss this as a joke, but as far as kids' movies go, I think you may be right. It's one thing for women to comfortably say this, but if a man does, he may get weird looks or contemptuous suspicion heaped on him. The stigma of MLP still hasn't died off.

True! ^u^ I agree with you all the way! Especially in movies/shows made more for little girls. When I was a kid there was a show called Pearlie, which also was fairy-themed, but they were like modern fairies in a city park and the plot of each show was TERRIBLE! Literally the point of the show was Pearlie's cousin trying to get revenge on her due to jealousy or something. And of course, they had to make them look stereotypic because you know you can't have a crappy show without degrading racial stereotypes. Pearlie had the cutesy, Disney princess look= pale blonde hair, light skin, freckles on her nose, blue/green eyes, wore pink a lot, spoke in a Barbie voice, yada yada yada... meanwhile her cousin= tall Asian girl, long black hair, wore heavier makeup, wore dark blue and purple clothes, was kind of full of herself, you know kind of like a stereotypic villain and she'd CRAVE revenge. As you can see, that show was never real popular and didn't make girls like fairies very much (another reason was because it was on the Qubo channel tho) but the Tinkerbell/Disney Fairies movies does the opposite. They show the diversity in a nice way and make the villain not be all bad, which I am all for, especially with younger female characters. As a young girl myself, I'm always happy when there's a sisters-before-misters or a girls-support-girls message. Though, growing up in the 2000's and 2010's, I think that they stopped with the guys-support-guys-without-being-gay and the bros-before-hoes messages and I think they need to show that once in a while too. I just think us girls are more sensitive, though. When they make a younger female villain be all bad and look a certain way, you can kind of see how it destroys confidence.

I think the second movie was more of a way to introduce character traits in Tinkerbell we were aware of but didn't see in the first one. I actually don’t mind that they changed her up, she’s more likable as an actual protagonist with a voice this way. I didn't have many friends until I was about 5 years old. There weren't many kids my age in the neighborhood, on weekends I would find some kids at the playground that I would never see again but all my other friends were animals. I would chase seagulls, feed cats, pet stray dogs twice my size (I thought all dogs were friendly so I almost got attacked by a dog when I was 3. I was so dissappointed)... So whenever I would see a character that likes animals I would get overly excited. Fawn was my favourite character and I *LOVED* to watch a movie about her. It's still my favourite out of all of them.
@testofplaces

I think my favourite character is Tinkerbell. Yeah, I know it’s the main character in most of the movies but it’s because I relate to her the most. I too like being creative and trying to fix random things and I can loose my temper at times.(though when she gets Angry I would rather get Sad) And probably relating to the fact that she can’t find purpose in the first movie. Oh well I may be overthinking here.

My favorite character didn’t make it into the movies, but the books were definitely an important part of my childhood. I have a lot of creative hobbies and interests, everything from painting to gardening to cooking and more. The fact that there were so many different fairies with different talents, and that they all had their own struggles to overcome with how they fit into the world around them, the vivid world building that was done with this franchise, it was all I could think about as an 8 year old. My favorite character was Prilla. She was the fairy whose talent was helping other fairies find their talents. Her struggle was similar to mine, in that she dabbled in every talent but never really fit in with any of them. The poster child for “jack of all trades, master of none”.

Something interesting about the Tinkerbell movies and the Peter Pan movies is how differently they characterize Tinkerbell herself. In the Peter Pan movies: tink is violent, possessive, and vain. She straight up tried to Kill Wendy a few times. But in the Disney Fairy movies she is resourceful, curious, kind, still has a temper but isn’t as violent. What happened between the Disney fairy movies and the Peter Pan movies that made Tinkerbell so mean?

The way pan treated her like a tool instead of a freind most of the time, possible giving her disdain then even developing that hatred evenmore. She doesn't get to use her "power" or maby even kicked out of the fairy land because of him and she feels like he's obligated? Idk

Iirc someone once said that because of a fairy's small size they can only feel one emotion at a time, idk if she saw peter pan as a best friend or love interest, but because peter wasn't paying any attention to her she got mad and mad was the only thing she felt. I suppose in the the tinkerbell movies they threw the 'one emotion at the time' thing out the window amd maybe that's why she feels different

@jocelynecupcake 3 жыл бұрын
Some of the reviews by parents complain that everything is too scary... or something else. It's those same people who want to remove a looney tunes character because he speaks with an accent or something Honestly, I agree that some movies are too scary for kids. I never seen Legend of Neverbeast, but I watched Spirited Away and Pinnochio when I was in my early teens, and I was shocked at how TERRIFYING they were. Spirited Away is almost like a horror film! Horror movies are NOT for kids. I feel the same way about stuff like Nightmare before Christmas, and anything by Tim Burton, those movies are NOT for kids. And if your kids are around the age where they're starting to want a good scare once in a while, it's okay but use your judgement. Even as a late teen, technically an adult, I still can't watch any of those movies because I freak out easily. If your kid is one of those sensitive kids who freak out easily like me, I highly DO NOT recommend those movies and think that they should have warnings on them. But if you're kid is near teen or preteen age and likes creepy stuff and plays a lot of games like five nights at freddies and that kind of thing, sure go ahead but remember that all kids aren't like that. also everyone who has seen Spirited Away seems to say it's "beautiful" and "aesthetic" but they all appear to be adults who are used to watching that kind of thing. Just because you enjoyed it doesn't mean your 8 year old is going to enjoy it. That pig scene was just too much, I watched it when I was 15 and I almost had a heart attack at that part. It's on my top 10 of movies that are too scary for kids

This is probably just me because I've experienced a lot of trauma in my life, but I also get the same feeling from a lot of the barbie movies. I'd really love to see them all hit Disney or Netflix at some point.

Zerena felt like an outcast and didn't feel like she belonged into the place she was supposed to be (dust fairy) and then her new friends (the pirates) weren't that good for her and I'm not getting into my own personal life but Zerena has always been my favorite character and pirate fairy has always been my favorite film.

I think Tinker Bell was the first thing I saw as a kid that I felt was made specially for girls, yet I still found enjoyment watching and looked forward to more movies for. I even remember being a little bit concerned about watching it in front of my cousins because I was worried it'd be humiliating to watch something "girly" in front of them. I find that interesting since I think a lot of kids had a "girls vs. boys" phase, and this movie managed to transcend that for me. Looking back further, my older brother also got into the My Little Pony fandom a few years later. Although that's a completely different story, I wonder if this was partially the cause for that, as it showed us that "girly" things can still be enjoyable.

Something about these films too is how it portrays people working past unhealthy relationships. In the first movie fairy Mary is a mentor and doesn’t value tinkerbell’s true abilities. In the second film Terence and Tinkerbell have a relationship without communication that causes tinkerbell to become angry and unhappy and tarence to feel unwanted. In the third movie a little girl’s interests are brushed off by her father who frequently ignores her to do work. In the fourth movie it’s not so much about relationships but does show how people are separated out of fear. In the fifth movie the pirate fairy is manipulated by Captain Hook, she believes he actually cares about her when in reality he is using her for power. In the last movie it does have a much darker tone but it really highlights how people aren’t forever, people die and have to be let go.

I got so excited when you brought up the books. I used to have the second one and the shorter one with Priya as a protagonist, which I loved. I wonder if you would be up to doing a video about the books and what you like most about them. As for me, my favorite character was in fact Priya, and I actually liked the idea of a dove that is the source of fairy dust. Although, I must admit that I also got a weird fascination by how the book described the taste of insects.
