I would say that using the arts in physical ways would be even better than say just a 20 minute walk. Dancing, singing, rhythmic clapping and tapping while moving and speaking poetry and then sitting absolutely still for a few minutes with eyes closed doing mindfulness meditation would certainly open up the mind making it receptive to ideas.

I saw Kim as a cheerleader throughout this presentation. Normally, I don't like cheerleaders much coz they seem to be trying to drum up enthusiasm for things that - to me - don't seem particularly important ... however, this simple idea of physical movement IS important. When I was growing up, I remember when schools cut the amount of recess time, and I thought to myself "Are they crazy?" My Mom then enrolled me in a tumbling class, to make sure I got my physical activity. Didn't appreciate it then, but grew to understand and love it. Thanks Mom. And thanks, Kim!

I agree with this speaker. We definitely need more physical exercise. But It is also possible that those statistics are showing that: If the better you are at science the more you understand the importance of physical exercise, and not the other way around as those statistics concluded, that: "If you exercise more you will be more creative". Although exercise will help you function better mentally, more oxygen flow to the brain and so on, but if someone lacking logic and imagination, then nothing will help them, not even more exercise, they might lose weight, but that's all. There's plenty of proof of this. Just take a look how many people are exercising regularly and they have no creativity at all. If you want to be creative, open your mind, and think outside the box. The possibilities are infinite.

I had this idea long ago. As someone with ADD I noticed long ago that not sitting for too long and continue blood flow helps focus and feeling alert plus helps keeping heart disease and blood clots at bay. What we begin as children sets tone for what comes easy as adults. I would have a game with an alarm every X minutes and when it rings to take a lap around the classroom, walking or running as free choice. Controlled chaos! When we make things a game the brain learns faster. And what counts isn't how many minutes you work, but how many of them are productive so taking away a few minutes of controlled chaos for better focus will help more stick of the other minutes. And smiles and laughter from running around makes a happy classroom - and happy students with joy from endorphins are less likely to bully and have more compassion. I'm not saying it would vanish, but less likely. And with endorphins, the natural high, you get positive reinforcement that school is where fun happens, not only do you decrease conflict but kids are more eager to go, less stress, better immune systems, and by that, better future. We aren't books to be stacked, we are biological creatures with motivation on what feels like a personal benefit. And what do we benefit from? Fun.

What are some idea for getting students to move and be physically active in the classroom? I am a high school teacher in a computer science classroom. I love the idea but I am not sure how to implement it due to a lack of space and not wanting students to accidentally knock over computers. Does anyone have any ideas on getting the students to safely move in a small space?

I'm confused by the terminology here. She is saying children need to get physically 'fit', but that is different from merely being physically active. For example, she says obese children score better if the test is preceded by physical activity. That doesn't mean the obese children are physically fit. I'm worried that the takeaway for some viewers is that they simply need to have students take a 10 minute walk before standardized tests. The REAL message is that we need to be creating a culture of physical activity that permeates the classroom in a way that continuously enhances learning.

This idea has been debunked (essentially). She's mixing correlation with causation. There is some evidence to show that obesity directly affects brain power, ability to think and process but only to a small degree. The reason obese children fail more often or do worse is because they are aware of their obesity, they become emotionally tired, de-motivated and they stop believing in their ability to achieve things. This systematically affects them at all levels in life, including with their education. This becomes a vicious cycle. There are many people out there who are obese and highly successful. These people live in a healthy environment that nurtures them, encourages them and gives them constructive criticism. This doesn't mean obesity should be accepted as-is, but the only way people can work on their bodies and their minds is from a place of positivity and a growth mindset. They need to believe that they can and will succeed/change and they also need to see that others believe that of them. This is why fat shaming is so bad- it doesn't help and it actually does more damage. Also because obesity is such an easy thing to fall into based on our basic biology and psychology it is necessary for us to have mediators who control our food enviroment- we need taxes on sugary/processed/junk food/drinks and we need to as a society talk about food, eating better and becoming healthier. The conversation about health food and healthy lifestyles has to be actively encouraged at school, work places and with our health professionals so these ideas become prevalent in society and culture.
@endxofxeternity7 жыл бұрын
I do think she makes a good point when she says to encourage kids to move- not just for obesity- not just to see the number on the scales to go down. Moving is a healthy part of a good life and a positive idea to live by.

yeah, kids don't learn because they don't move in class, and that's why they love physical education....how come nobody thought about that before....I have a feeling that there is a lack of holistic view in this research.
@thomjuhl11 жыл бұрын
Funny how cynicism fuels so little, while passion and action rattle and shake so many more hearts, bodies and minds. Keep up the good work, Kim, work that is firmly grounded in myriad research.
@ferghingaro1711 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! If it was not for cynicism humanity would have disappeared long ago. And use means to increase blood pressure and releasing hormones is not the answer to a good education. It's like taking medicine for depression not knowing why you're sad in the first place. Ask students why they hate school and the answer will not be because of the chairs. There's a whole world around a child and his brain.
@ferghingaro1710 жыл бұрын
valerie miller I encourage you to do the same. Just because you 'apparently' agree with her, it doesn't mean you shouldn't consider the whole story. I've made my point about this speech by point out that her argument needs to have a broader view about educational institutions and their educational methods which have far more implication on children learning than just not exercise before classes...
@ferghingaro1710 жыл бұрын
Sorry for my misinterpretation! =D What I usually get from these researches is a valid argument that goes far enough so it doesn't touch the root problem. Of course it makes sense and it helps to enlighten things but I'd like to see the academy getting institutions by the neck! ;) Tks for your comment. Regards from Brazil.
