This must be one of the greatest videos ever in golf! If not in the whole sport, certainly on shallowing the club! 5:48 Brilliant question, Eric! Why!....6:20 Love the attitude with which you start walking behind the dude here! No1. A swing path which is gently tracking from the inside! 7:08 No2. Influence on the attack angle (more shallow angle of attack) thereby impacting 8:48 ball speed, spin, stability and distance. "Good things, right"! And reason No.3 8:50 How our body (arms, hips, legs, shoulder tilt) angles react to the shaft angle - Absolutely Brilliant! 11:33 and A++ Job of explaining why! I am clearly a WHY person! It is very challenging for one to wrap one's head around doing something when one does not understand why! I am so very pleased for your explanation, but oh so very disappointed that it has taken me 43 years to understand this and the importance of fully committing to implementing this in my swing! I have played off 6! Can you imaging how much better a player I might have been, had this explanation been known to me sooner! I am currently a pretty strong 10, because I took way too much concentration and the attending headaches to play and enjoy the game, if I tried to go lower swinging the club the way I was swinging itn prior to yesterday! The best video out, Eric! The best! Hope it gets more views! I will update in due course on my progress! Sorry for the voluminous comment! Thanks again, Eric!

Massively important video. Ties so many important of your other videos together That video is the key that unlocks so many of your other videos and dispels so many factors that seem intuitive i.e. pulling the club down. If I understood correctly, the arms are brought to the hitting area by rotation of the trunk of your body. Perhaps this thought woulds be helpful - assuming a correct backswing at the top if your club is pointed at 11am then to shallow the club you point the club at say 10am. For me the clock face is understood easily. I also like the connection between coming up and out of a shot tied directly to the shallowing of the club and that up and out of a shot is actually an athletic reaction essentially protecting your wrist from damage. Very important to the senior golfer (me). Important collaboration between two very knowledgeable instructors. Thanks so much!!!

@@CogornoGolf Eric, I only recently, like yesterday, realized rotational speed. I've been golfing a long time, and never really felt power from rotation. What a difference? It resulted from feeling me rotating my right side bend as the power source, and it resulted in solid shots, good direction, and consistency. That rotation was paired with and aided by bracing that left side. Wow. Just wow. But, I've been here before with things I've thought were the secret, but maybe this is the real deal. I think too that thoughts like the magic triangle will turn your focus from arms and hands as power to the upper body opening (with side bend) and rotating back to the ball. Thank you as always for your excellent instruction.

Thank you Eric/John for the video. Great contents... I'm just concerned one thing about this teaching... when John later mentioned to use the chest, the core and rib cages as an engine to initiate the move (around @19:00 down)... Shouldn't the lower body and the hips initiate the move... then when the hips move everything else passively turns. And the shaft should automatically shallow due to the gravity (now at that point use the wrists to control not to let the shaft go too shallow). If I force myself to initiate the move with my chest/core/shoulders first, I know my lower body will never catch up.... Or what I'm missing here...
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hey KK! In reality they are ALL involved. The lower body would be going first then the upper body after. For some people when they feel the upper body....the lower body goes by itself. For others focus on the lower would be appropriate.

Eric, I find it much more effective to look at the triangle created by the left and right for arms. The triangle is relatively horizontal in the backswing and becomes vertical in the downswing. The more vertical and more shallow the club gets. No need to manipulate the wrist. Also very powerful to pull the grip and hard to cast from that position.

Great video! But a tiny nit pick..... in transition flexing the wrist only rotates the shaft on it's own axis thus closing the face. To shallow the club you have to pronate the forearm. I think doing both moves together during the transition are good. Sorry can't help using the anatomically correct terms lol.
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Kurray! You're right--lead wrist flexion mainly changes face to path and dynamic loft. And pronation has a more direct effect on shallowing (shaft angle) BUT as you flex that does also shallow the shaft as you add the flex you also add ulnar deviation (which in combination) make the shaft angle lower.
@daveschreiber95873 жыл бұрын
This might be the trick that finally gets me to a shallow shaft. But one question ... how shallow is "shallow enough?" At left arm parallel on the downswing if a line drawn through the shaft down toward the ball hits the ground right outside the ball, is that shallow enough? By "outside the ball" I mean on the side of the ball furthest from my feet. Thanks!

@@CogornoGolf Awesome. I can do that with my irons now. But I just realized that standing further from the ball with the driver ... the geometry requires an even more shallow swing inorder for that line to hit the ground outside the ball. Is that right?

I think the same checkpoint applies. More tilt at setup and more extension with upper body/right side bend should automatically have the driver plane more "shallow" with the same feels as irons.

Very informative and as they say in geometry a triangle is the strongest geometric shape. So my question would be this, if one feels like they are maintaining the triangle arm structure during the downswing, what would be the corrections if the ball goes right or left instead of straight?
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! Thanks! I would say if the shaft angle feel below the triangle that would be "too shallow" or "under plane". You would expect pushes to the right and/or hooks to the left with that pattern If the shaft angle went above the triangle that would be "steep" or over the top of the plane. The would lead to pulls to the left or fades. Hope that helps

Eric, Love your videos. This video makes sense but seems opposite of what I’ve been working on from previous videos…which is using the split grip drill, dropping the hands down to start downswing and then turning into the ball with the body. Also seems completely different than the Malaska move. When I feel like I start more with the body like this video or Gankas videos and I flatten shaft to start the downswing and keep hands out and in front it just feels completely different. I know these are ‘feels’ but can you please clarify the difference? Thanks

DJ, Morikawa and Rohm all have that BOWED wrist as they come into the ball. Very obvious on the DTL views at the top of the backswing. DJ seems to set that wrist position right on takeaway, while Colin and John R bend that wrist (shallow) just as they start the downswing. Thus, "locked in" as described here, they just have to turn their bodies really fast for a great "shallow" strike and a lot of ball speed = pro distance. Thanks!!

I'd have liked this more if the attention was on dominant hand intentions/ conditions. I don't believe that the vast majority of us have much awareness or control of our weak arm/hand relative to the dominant. The way I'd describe what was going on here is the right forearm rotating clockwise with increasing rt wrist extension(and matching left wrist flexion) while moving from radial deviation to ulnar deviation of the right hand. Imo pulling the arms down is not the primary reason the shaft gets steep. I know as a fact many fine players pull the arms down hard. Including long drive champions. Steepening happens because it's very "natural" to want to flex the right wrist coming out of transition, and clockwise right forearm rotation is very counter intuitive for players when they are trying to square the clubface. So they flex the right wrist and either resist clockwise forearm rotation or even rotate counterclockwise, all steepening the shaft. When actually the intention should be to get the right forearm to rotate clockwise while torso rotation pressures extend the right wrist. "Lag" is purely rt wrist extension and not radial deviation. Right wrist radial deviation tracks left wrist extension is another way to see things. All no good. I think the way this lesson was taught would be much better for a flipped player, playing with his dominant side in the lead. I've said all the same things here from a dominant side perspective. Most of our brain is devoted to running the dominant hand and imo that's the primary if not the only thing we have at our disposal to direct our intentions. Peace out.

Actually shallowing the swing plane alone does not affect the solidity if the strike - it helps by countering the swing plane from shifting out over the top and messing up the "square to the target line" face angle. Regardless of the swing plane, the clubhead always travels on an arc. 8:20 To hit more solid, square the face angle + some forward shaft lean angle and level out the approach angle to impact like Byron Nelson. Concentrating on better (earlier) sequencing of the lower body movement with more relaxed arms in the downswing transition and less hand manipulation and less swing thoughts gives you more feel and control.

Easier said than done! Shallowing.. it is a subtle move but rehearsing it slow is easy. But when you add forces it all goes back to steep. Getting the club in the slot is unatural and that’s why it’s hard to improve our swings. It’s the magic move. Need more content drills. I have a perfect swing and flush the ball. However on video the shaft never gets shallow enough to where it is in the right forearm on downswing. (Which is what all pros have in common just before impact.

If you notice he is almost stood up when showing this, if he had left shoulder down it would look more normal. Remember left shoulder down will steepen the shaft and rotation will bring hands in. Do the move and stand up shaft should be horizontal and right elbow in in front. You can do this from any position. It’s a video more about arm structure. Eric’s video on right side bend with right hip high gets my arms in this position. You have to decide which you need to work on. I need my arms to react to the pivot because my pivot doesn’t react to the arms.

@@CogornoGolf thank you. That makes more sense. FYI I had seen that 4:00 video prior and found it extremely helpful. Hence my confusion with this one!

Unfortunately lowering the shaft and hands together with chest lead to over the top move. Hands must go much faster than torso and beginners must learn that first. That move what you show is for more advanced golffers and it’s more of a feel. Hands never go with same speed with chest. Took me years to figure that out and there are not much information about it out there.

@@CogornoGolf And to make clear, this content as well is very good as usual from you. You go so well to details understanding those better than most teaching pros that’s for sure. I have learned a lot from you over the years and want to thank you for that. Golfswing is so weird to learn. Pulling the handle and using your arms are great tips for the over the topper but really bad for the one who has the proper sequence. There are so much of information out there about using your body and everything go together in a swing. That is so bad for most of us. Seems that pros that learn a proper swing when they are kids never can understand or feel that they speed up their hands compared to the body.

Hey Louis! Yes. The more down, out and up on the way back the more you would keep the elbow toward target and logo away version in the follow through

Eric, it seems you have presented two different methods of shallowing the club. Very confusing!
@MrAbrazor3 жыл бұрын
The shallowing of the club is unconscious, it’s by moving the knees flexing forward like you see in Trevino swing for ex
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Well sure it is....if you do it subconsciously. But what if you do not? You move the knees flexing forward and it does not shallow.....then what should someone do? Thats really who we are trying to help. All the best

Boring, stupid over thinking. Can you both even shoot under par? This is why 98% of golfers cant break 80 consistently.
