I think this number could've been a bit more chaotic and goofy. It feels too contained with them being in this one house. If The Grinch was running around, stealing stuff while someone sang the song in the background and the lights were going crazy, I think that would've been cool. The performances are actually pretty solid here, though.
@ZoraCatone Жыл бұрын
If you want chaotic, I'd highly recommend looking up Stefan Karl's performance. Infinitely better in every possible way.

Honestly, this is the most “meh” broadcast of a musical. That doesn’t mean I hate it. The songs are nice, obviously “You’re a Mean One” is the best Seuss Christmas song, BooBoo Stewart does a great job as young Max, and I did love Matthew Morrison’s portrayal, but only half the time. Probably because I enjoy Boris Karloff and Jim Carrey’s versions too much.

Comparing how each actor does the Grinch the best is like comparing apples to oranges and each one of them plays them a little bit differently. Boris Karloff plays up more of the subtle, cold heartedness of his character. His version of the Grinch doesn’t raise his voice or angrily screams aloud but you can hear the bitterness in his voice and you can feel his anger gradually building up. Jim Carrey plays up more of the flamboyant, energetic and wickedness of his character and we see frequently troll and pull nasty pranks on the Who’s. His version of the Grinch has a more in-your-face, ill mannered attitude but also has a sympathetic and tragic backstory on why he resents the Whos, christmas and why he is the way he is. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the Grinch more like a torture soul and he looks like a character who has been through trauma and has shut himself from anyone in Whoville making the few times where he feels lonely and isolated that much more powerful. Now unlike the other versions, the ending has a twist which I appreciated it. When he does return the gifts to Whoville, he doesn’t immediately go celebrating Christmas with the who’s and everything’s okay, he actually explains his reason why he stole Christmas, apologizes and takes accountability for his wrongful actions. He doesn’t beg for forgiveness. He doesn’t break down and cry. He just slowly walks away and goes back to his cave, feeling like because he stole everyone’s Christmas, he believes he doesn’t deserve to have any friends and to live alone for the rest of his life…that is until Cindy Lou comes over and invites him over for Christmas dinner out of sheer kindness, compassion and forgiveness. When he arrives to the party, instead of getting shamed, booed and kicked out of the party out of rejection and anger, the Whos genuinely welcomed the Grinch with loving and friendly open arms which has been implied that the Whos genuinely forgave the Grinch for stealing their Christmases. Stefan Karl and Patrick Page lean that way at times too but they both also still managed to find the subtle, bitter, grouchiness of the character as well. Matthew Morrison plays up more as the irritable, spiteful crankiness and we see him frequently get angry and lose his temper and he loses his temper a lot in this production.

Matthew Morrison is not by any means awful, just sort of miscasted. I know he’s trying but he just doesn’t have that level of “Grinchiness” that Jim Carrey, Boris Karloff, Patrick Page or Stefan Karl have. However despite that, I do like seeing different actors bring their own take on the character and the very different interpretations of the Grinch with the horror movie being the only exception in my opinion.
