Rough Rider and Barkeep owner here. Love them - from the quality, to the customizations, the authenticity, performance, and really important to me, is the friendliness of the platform for new shooters, along with seasoned shooters. Don't mean to sound cornball, but this is really how I feel. I've got grandkids and I like these more than my other guns for their intro to shooting.

I am almost 79 years old and recently bought my first revolver. I was going buy several years ago but one of my renters talked be into semi autos. My first revolver, a Heritage Rough Rider with a 4.75" barrel and I love it. The grips came pre-scuffed, so now I wish I would have bought the other one the gun shop had with the wooden grips, I can always re-do wooden grips. I bought my Heritage on sale in Columbus,Ohio and got a GREAT deal on it, so great that I've already ordered the /22WMR cylinder. I am making a switch from all semi autos to all revolvers and my Heritage is just the first. I am also planning on a Taurus 856 to replace my Ruger lc9s and maybe a Taurus 942 after that. The Heritage is replacing my S&W .22 compact. You may ask why am I changing from semi autos to all revlovers, ARTHIRITIS AND GOUT in my hands which made it nearly impossible to load a magazine. I have no trouble loading a revolver. I would LOVE to see Heritage come out with a 38 Special single action revolver that looks just like the .22 Rough Rider. I don't think you would have to go any larger than a 38 Special. Taurus already has plenty of options when it comes to larger calibers clear to the Judge. If Heritage would come out with a 38 Special Rough Rider Taurus already has 38 Special cylinders and barrels, so it would be a very easy thing to do, I know I would want one.

The first modification I did to mine was remove that safety. Not needed with a half cock function. The second mod was to fix a nub on the hammer, preventing a solid striking surface and causing impact marks on the receiver. And the third mod was to increase tension on the hammer spring to fix light primer strikes. For $150, I'm not complaining too much, but for a gun that misfired 2/3 shots and a $60 shipping fee, it simply was not worth sending back to the company and the mods were easy enough to do with a dremel, a shim and a screwdriver.

I had to do some "precision machining" on mine pretty much right out of the box. The frame was milled so poorly it had a sharp edge around the center the long way. It had massive hang-up problems, couldn't cock it without considerable force, especially after warming it up a bit. But after the adjustment I can truthfully say I love it, runs fine, really fun to shoot.

If it keeps misfiring modify the hammer by taking a small file and on the 3rd or last spur on the hammer file that down like a meter or so then take a small round file file a small but noticeable curve on that 3rd or last bottom spur and that should take care of the misfire issue this mod will allow the trigger to get a better grip and will also increase accuracy but also completely stop the misfire and will also give you a heavier trigger pull. Try it I did it to mine and I don't have no issues at all with it

Put 100 through my new RR bought 24hr ago. Slick video, here is some real world data: 1. Cylinder constantly locks, either lr or wmr. It seems the slight deformation of a spent round will catch in the cynlinder frame. Also some misfires with no strike mark at all- can be reloaded and fired. Cylinders spin new rounds fine but fired casings cant spin through the frame. I mean its called a 'revolver', should any of this really be a problem? 2. Also the ejector assembly fell off the gun mid session, kind of sad , hilarious (found the screw in my casings). 3. Lots of blow back of metal shards or something, makes me nervous using it. Any solutions? Was thinking of a new 9mm you make with optics but this makes me wonder what you are doing over there.

@jerroldshelton9367 Жыл бұрын
If I wanted a transfer bar, I'd buy a Ruger. instead. I'd rather have the hammer-block safety of the Rough Rider, because it doesn't nanny me or f*** up trigger pull full-time like a transfer bar does. I like the Rough Rider for its Colt-likeness. Had to replace the cylinder hand spring on it after shooting around 1000 rounds. Not sure how many were put through it before I bought it. Pretty fun gun. However, if I was going to buy a new .22 SA revolver, I would probably go with the Ruger Wrangler.
@tzackaria73 жыл бұрын
deciding between the two I went with the Wrangler. Not sure that was a good choice. Accuracy with the Wrangler is terrible. Tight groups with a Single Six but all over the paper with the Wrangler. Trigger pull is hard and tight, and when the trigger breaks it moves the gun off target. Not to be fixed as the spring is used for the trigger and the firing pin. Soften the trigger and you soften the firing pin which could lead to the primers not igniting

I like how they say nothing needed to be changed on the gun. The shell extractor is cheap plastic and could be cnced out of aluminum. If we had this solid bar design it would open up race gun mods, which they could make and market themselves

I have asked this question for years but never received an answer. How is the slot to hold hand which turns the cylinder by the action of the hammer cut? It's the law now, every gun needs an approved safety system. Building an in-hammer or in-cylinder transfer safety would double the cost per gun, and a transfer bar system would eliminate it being anything like a colt single action. I think they did the best they could while keeping the cost down.

So, let's say you're in your shop, garage, basement, etc., you've got your SA in the 2nd position, and you're just loading, or unloading your SA, but suddenly something unexpected happens, like maybe a child, bumps into you, a football, baseball, RC car, knocks you off-balance, gun drops, or you jerk your hand, and boom. In an instant, you have an AD. It's not unheard of. Many stories of ADs from back in the day. What's stupid to me is people whining about something it is dead simple, and very effective. On my inexpensive Heritages, I like them a lot, now that we have a grandson who will be 6 next year and will have his first trip to the range. Beyond that, I kind of like the sort of old-fashioned mechanical look of them now that I'm used to it on my Barkeep and 2 Rough Riders. I've got Cimarron Pistolero coming. I definitely think their hammer block safety is a more elegant and unobtrusive solution, which I think is good and bad. Definitely requires more training for the lil ones learning how to load, fire, eject and repeat. I'll probably leave the Pistolero out of the picture until he gets a little bit bigger and stronger and experienced. I figure we can keep him entertained between my Golden Boy (which is way too big and heavy for him right now), my wife's 63 yr old .22 9 shot DA revolver, and my 3 Heretiges (all .22s). Great fun for my wife and I, and a safe platform for the grandkids. 1911s? I like to point to the safeties on them. You don't hear moaning about the safeties on them (though I'm sure there are some). They were designed that way because the U.S. Army demanded it. I think that tells you something about their thoughts on safeties. I think it's safe to assume they demanded them because there were far too many ADs in previous wars with SAs. I read that in the '30s, Colt even dabbled with a third safety for their 1911s. DAs? That long and heavy trigger pull in double-action is all the safety I need and I can't stand it that S&W yielded to the left on that issue. I suppose gun manufacturers have to let them win a fight here and there in order for us to win the war. Shotguns? I'd never own one without one. I'm sure people see me pop into these threads and say the same thing over and over again, and are getting tired of it. Sorry, but I'm not buying a 1-1 reproduction, so I accept and welcome the hammer block. And for the incredibly low price, it's all the better.

I went to the local gun store yesterday to pick it up and upon inspection I found the head of the screw that holds the slide ejector to the barrel was completely damaged as if someone had over tightened, or cross threaded the screw and kept forcing it into the barrel. The sales associate brought out another Heritage Rough Rider and upon inspection I found that when trying to decock the revolver to avoid dry firing, the hammer would stick and I had to manually push it back down toward the firing pin. The salesman agreed that these were both quality control issues and they would be sent back to the manufacturer.

The one I bought was completely fine.

Why are they going up so much in price recently though?

Explain to me why a single action revolver needs a safety. Sounds like Alec Baldwin saying that he didn’t pull the trigger.

They're pot metal plinkers. And they are fine at that. Put several 500rd bricks through one. Accurate and mostly dependable. Wouldn't call it an investment or heirloom. For the money it's a fun gun.
