Good to see you Buffalo. Heritage 22's a user's review, inexpensive, but well enough made to be reliable if treated right. Those of us that own them will tell you little tricks, 1) the ejector rod cover screw, clean the hole, clean the screw and put some blue loctite on it. 2) be exceptionally thorough about cleaning. That forcing cone can gather a lot of grit shooting 22's. That grit will also embed in the frame around the cylinder gap. That zinc alloy sure ain't steel. 3) speaking of that zinc alloy, in some states it is illegal to own these because of the zinc alloy frame. 4) The frame finish will scratch, get used to it. Paul Harrell was a hero to a lot of us.

Nice little carbine. Looks like a lot of fun and pretty handy. I have a 10-22 with a Green Mountain bull barrel, shaped the stock to fit it, a real tack driver that is not anywhere as ammunition sensitive as the stock barrel. Also have a Ruger Mk11 pistol that is a lot of fun. The Rancher has the advantage of being able to shoot the shorts and CB cartridges which I like for short range varmints. The magnum cylinder option is another plus. The Rancher is added to my "gotta get one" list.

You gave a good talk, son. Heritage Rough Riders are a fun, inexpensive way for folks any age to plink enjoy the slowness of SSAs. Not only are 22LRs the cheapest, but you get to take your time loading and unloading, maybe even talking with guy for a bit between rounds. 😮 You can spend some quality time with someone for 2 hrs and spend $20. OR you could load up your semi auto ammo guzzler and spend that 20 bucks in about 20 seconds. We'll, that was great. Now you're broke and out of ammo. Nothing left to do now except go back to your "safe place" and touch yourself...that's fun too. I'll be sitting here with my grandson for a couple hrs yet. 😂😂 That wasn't too harsh, was it? 🤔😁

I have this in the black & gold version. It fills it's purpose as a fun gun, however it is surprisingly accurate and would easliy dispatch small critters. I hunt rouge tin cans with it and use "CCI Quiet" ammo (no side blast in the face & low noise). Had to have the main spring replaced due to light strikes and as a FYI the mainspring is not the same as in the revolvers. (It is shorter, but a revolver spring can be cut down to fit.). I also replaced the plastic ejctor rod with a metal one. Love mine and enjoyed this video. Thanks.

I got one of the 16" revolvers and it was running 50% keyholing... but only with 22LR. With shorts it did fine, and with magnums it did fine. I contacted customer service and the sent another cylinder out to rule out timing issues, but it had no effect. I returned the gun and they replaced the barrel and forcing cone. Now it keyholes about 5% of the time. It will barely hold 12" at 100 yards. I understand what this gun is, and it is accurate enough to be fun... Interestingly though... I have a 9" version and a Barkeep (3" barrel maybe) and they have almost identical accuracy to the 16" gun. Yes... 3" barrel at 100 yards will stay inside 12", but has a bit more drop than the 16". This is consistent across almost any ammo. Lapua Biathlon did better than average, (consistent), but the next best was Armscor 36gr cp jhp's! Whatever works... but these Heritage revolvers have been "good enough to be fun" for the price.
@RequisiteFunction26 күн бұрын
Very interesting that your longer barrel had such poor accuracy. I would love to know the physics behind what caused that, but I can only speculate. It's a possibility that the longer barrel is leveraging against the reciever in a way that your handgun would not. I'd definitely try it with and without a sling. A barrel-mounted sling on a flexible barrel is an engineering absurdity. Slings are normally mounted to forends, which are attached to the reciever. Even when they look like they're attached to the barrel, they're attached to the reciever. This allows the barrel to be independent of the sling forces and weight. I'd also try shooting it from a vise. Genuinely curious about this issue. Longer barrels tend to give tighter groups, not because faster is better, but because the added FPS helps reduce the percentage of deviation between bullets. In other words, the difference from one bullet to the next (in the same batch) is less pronounced when all of the bullets are going faster. A 50fps difference at 700fps is a lot more noticeable than a 50fps difference at 1200fps. Short barrels can shoot fine with good ammo, but bad ammo works better in longer guns. Does your rifling look out of place in any way? I once purchased a new .22 rifle in the 90s. The rifling on the end , toward the muzzle, was basically missing. It was the strangest thing. I debated returning it, but it actually shot pretty well for some strange reason. Anyway, good luck. I think of you find the problem, you can hone in the groups more.

Buffalo, I just recently subscribed, but I have watched a good number of your videos already. I have enjoyed every one. I also live here in the Appalachian Mountains, and we share the same taste in firearms. I have 2 of these .22 carbines, each with different sighting features. I'm sorry you got a burn mark on the sling, but maybe I can help with that issue. Hook your left arm through the sling and wrap it once on your forearm. Paul Harrell (RIP) has a good demonstration of this method of stabilization in a video he also did on the Rancher Carbine. Your bench/table rest is also likely deflecting some of the cylinder spray back at your face as well. As you, I enjoy a large variety of firearms, in many shapes, calibers, styles, and functions. It is a shame that some people only come away with a negative view of a fun little plinker like this one, but even some minor inconveniences are enough to discourage people from something outside of their comfort zone. I began shooting at 8 years-old with cap & ball black-powder pistols & rifles, so modern firearms and shells of any sort are of absolutely no inconvenience to me in any way, lol! Your free-hand marksmanship is much more consistent than mine, even after 50+ years of shooting, too! Having a relatively accurate firearm never hurts, either, lol! Thanks for sharing your range time and have a great Christmas!
@buffalosoutdoorsАй бұрын
I tried wrapping the sling around my support arm as I do with my other rifles and carbines, you may have seen me do that in some of my other videos, but never could get it comfortable with this Rancher. I ended up just grabbing the sling and pulling it tight which did help some with stabilization, though not as much as the wrap around technique with other rifles that have fore end stocks. I will try again next time I have it out since you say it works for you. It's always good to hear from a fellow Appalachian and I am always open to tips and ideas. I have a Circuit Judge that has a blast shield to prevent burns from the cylinder gap. Even with the blast shield, I still sometimes get small burns on my forearm. This with no shield will defiantly give you a burn. Now .22lr is most likely not going to blow off any fingers, but I am sure it will...educate you quickly on how to hold this. Looks like a ton of fun. SSA revolvers are fun to shot because of the manual of arms, and this has that going for it. I have seen these before. They seem to come back onto the market randomly, I think they do sprint runs of these at the factory, and then kick it back into gear when their inventory starts running low.

Another good and fair video. I agree with not being a great all around.22 ,but definitely fills a gap in the types of firearms made. Would not be a good choice for a first rifle when teaching children.

Merry Christmas, Buffalo! Always glad to see your videos. Could that .22LR cylinder be slightly mis-timed and two of the chambers are off enough that the slugs deform and cause them to not fly straight and keyhole? Just a thought, I had a Taurus .22 revolver years ago with a mis-timed cylinder that not only keyholed slugs from the same three chambers every time but shot what looked like a 20 yard shotgun pattern instead of a group from a handgun.
@buffalosoutdoorsАй бұрын
Very well could be. Many things can cause a bullet to be unstable. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Perhaps a pair of gauntlet gloves would solve the cylinder gap blast problem,( just don't forget if not wearing them, I have a Remington falling block 22-the small one that gives a little dusting of the face when firing-yeah wear glasses !

Watched the Paul Harrel video and noticed that the carbine he used did not have the adjustable rear sight or the sling attachment, both of those could lead to better accuracy. I am also wondering if the cylinders bores aren't quite straight on these.
@buffalosoutdoorsАй бұрын
Isn't that a great video. Lots of information to take in. Paul always laid his videos out in such a manner that the novice as well as the seasoned could follow along and stay interested. The buckhorn sights (as bad as I dislike them) will definitely let the user shoot more accurately than the fixed "gutter" sights. These Heritage revolvers are not highly refined precision instruments so you may be right that things are quite straight.
@thomastommy1192Ай бұрын
That's a nice gun. I like it. Is that considered a hand gun or a long gun? I give your videos a thumbs up.
@buffalosoutdoorsАй бұрын
This would be a long gun since it's intended to be fired from the shoulder and meets the requirements for the ATF to call it a rifle. Thanks for the question and I appreciate that thumbs up, every little bit helps!

Hi Buffalo, I love SAA revolvers but that safety is just butt ugly and kills heritage revolvers for me. Your camera when you were first shooting off hand at the being of the video you could see the gases escaping from the cylinder Gap. That was awesome. Thanks for all your hard work and time Sir. 🤠🇺🇲

@MrDuffy81Ай бұрын
A single action seems more reasonable on a rifle than on a pistol. You would naturally be in a position to re-caulk the single shot instead of in a pistol scenario where you have to take it off the target in order to do so.

It is a little easier to work the hammer with the stock in place. Thanks for the comment!

If it was available with interchangable cylinders I would be interested. Purchasing the mag cylinder separately the cost is most likely prohibitive.

Does no one shoot a 3ft square sheet of white paper with a black cross drawn in the middle when assessing the new to them firearm? There's no guessing, no missing (unless you have something seriously wrong with the firearm), no need for a spotter...... You just hold on the black cross and fire until you have a feel for the firearm.... and there should be a good group somewhere close to the black cross... and now you know to adjust the sights (or the Kentucky Windage you need to apply if it's not your firearm or you cannot adjust the sights.)
