Being born n raised on NE Oahu, I was enslaved to the world of surf by the 5th grade .. in 1975. Nothing else mattered. But after I got the very first morey boogey board - the small one, as there was a big one also, and got up on my knees one day at Makapu'u beach(E most Oahu) .. my destiny as a kneeboarder had been cemented for life. In the 7th grade('77) I got my first actual fiberglass n foam kneeboard .. talk about ONE SUUPAH STOOOOKED ISLAND KEIKI !!?? A red n white .. Lightning Bolt .. genuine Gerry Lopez twin fin box skeg 4'6" with the black lightning bolt right down the center of the deck and bottom. Cut class, cut baseball practice, cut chores .. cut everyting, aaah !! .. fo surf .. East Oahu was 30 miles of dozens of barrier reef breaks that were usually just about a half mile out with real shallow lagoons. So with friends or solo, we'd foray into the aqua fray, chancing that we could get past the reef to the outside .. as dry reef scenarios were a no-go due to just getting shredded bloody on coral heads. For us bike/skateboard bound stoner surfers .. this was surfari heaven. High school n post HS, trips to Kauai n Molokai were the newer rendition of surfari heaven or even just getting to North Beach(sneak by da MPs, aaaah !) on Kaneohe Marine Core Air Station(E Oahu secret GEM) or the mile long deep water paddle to Rabbit(Manana) Island was dreamland .. then moving to Silicon Valley at 23(wot da f**k wuz I tinkeen) and bailing to Santa Cruz to surf my okole off and wander the north coast great white riddled, endless surf spots, there and gone on the high or low tides .. was my life. I couldn't get acquaintances to surf with me, cuz dey wuz da kine aaah .. chicken buk buk of da big fish wit da biiiig teeth .. I was like - bra .. da kine crowd control, aaah !!? I had a 5/4 w hood n needed every bit of it. Watching vids like this makes me understand the physical n mental fortitude inherently necessary for places this far north. Heck, norcal was plaaaany cold enough !! Awesome editing and videography !! Peace n aloha !!

Don't make it so easy to find. Mick Fanning's wave took 5 minutes. The other perfect right took 7 minutes. This took a minute.

Dood, no one’s gonna be flocking en masse to a location like this, especially with wave pool technology the likes of which is gonna keep people more or less locked in place when those things are all over the joint. Water this cold takes care of itself.

This is a $10K surf trip. Most people who are going to lay out 10k will probably go somewhere tropical. Would you really go there and lug all your gear and wetsuit and booties to surf in 50 degree water?

@@Handelson The last time I surfed in Alaska, the water was 36 degrees. This spot is further north, so yeah, self regulating.
