I lived in Japan as a missionary for some years and attended every taiko concert I could find. A friend took me to a taiko factory one time and I got to meet a famous female drummer there. She had injured her arm so could not play until healed . With a translator she was most interesting to talk with. Sadly, the owners of the place were very proprietary and would not allow me to see how the drums were made. I was able to see the tree trunks and the finished products. All this was one of the high points of my time in this beautiful country. I still wish to thank all the fine people who I talked to for all the information they provided me. Me, being a wood-worker, was fascinated with the dedication and attention to detail the craftsmen showed in the completed drums. I attended a taiko concert where most of the drums were at least 4ft. across. There were several that were larger than that. I sat in a chair about 300 + ft. from the performers. When the largest drums were struck, the vibrations traveled across the ground and made my chest also vibrated. It was marvelous.

Amazing. They take much time until the end of its making putting great efforts into it. It is precise in technique and beautifully made! English translation is expected so people overseas can understand much more.

The every little detail of what they have to do to get the drum done the wait for the wood to dry slowly and all cuts off from chisels and the way they work the skin ready and tuning the drum is a job that takes years to accomplish and the knowledge and skills that they need to have but I think that they have to work on their self discipline and patience to get the drum perfected and sounding perfect
Fascinating video, can't help but wonder how on Earth they Made these Drums using only traditional Hand Tools in the past..

Questions: 1) How did he create a perfect circle as he cut the wood? 2) The wood was long. How did his chainsaw go deep enough? The wood is like 4 times the length of his chain saw. 3) How long did it take to make the drum? Sorry, I do not read Kanji. Very thanks for the Producers of the video to be shared online. : -)
@omkr01225 жыл бұрын
The drum making workers cut the wood from the both sides using the chain saw. There might be a 'special long' chainsaw which is not shown in the video used to saw through the wood. The workers work with patience and careful attention to quality. That's why they were able to make a perfect circle. A good kodo drum takes 5 years to be made. web-japan.org/kidsweb/cool/12-12-25/index.html

I cant believe the size of that tree, amazing craftmanship its fascinating to watch , although Id like to see how they were traditionally made. Can anyone tell me the type of tree they use I'd love to see one alive ? Also do they continue making smaller and smaller drums from the remaining core ? its so cool

I can only imagine how expensive these are, considering how much manual labor goes into their making. I'll bet a large portion of the process could be automated (especially the part with the chain saws!) and done in about 1/10th the time, but this is tradition. Well done!
@davidjacobs85584 жыл бұрын
yet it seems there is significant demand for such large drums, which is rather hard to believe. I guess they could get a huge wood lathe machine to cut down on labor cost.
@JustWasted3HoursHere4 жыл бұрын
@@davidjacobs8558 For sure a lathe would make things muuuuuuuuch faster (and more accurate too), but of course that's why Rolls Royce makes their cars by hand! Even if they just used a lathe for the first step and then did everything else by hand it would speed up the job tremendously, but it would be less unique.

Talk about beating your drum. If they used a giant bandsaw, they could have less wastage, more tabletops, planks and other furniture made from the slabs they cut from the log, and the center much bigger and cleaner. Then they could state they have the worlds largest bandsaw.
