It's John's arrangement of the harmonies that raises the song's level to astounding and beautiful. Nobody could do it as well. What a great combination of that and their voices; one of the best blends ever. We were very lucky to be old enough to really appreciate them then. It was exciting, brand new songs every other day from an incredible, diverse array of musicians constantly getting better. It was a golden era from 1962-1972.
@Scorchy6668 ай бұрын
John's arrangements were incredible. The problems began once he began mixing in the studio. Remastering his work for digital today is next to impossible because he didn't really care about the different channels and stereo. It was mostly dumped into one channel, minus any overdubbing. I used to have their greatest hits on cassette. Certain notes and vocals would simply drop off.

I disagree. She was a great talent and had a gorgeous voice. - but that goes for the rest of the group. Denny sang lead on most of their hits. John wrote most of their songs - and arranged those, they "borrowed" or got from others. He is the mastermind behind the fabulous harmonies which are second to none in the rock-business. So Cass was just one out of 4 great musicians.
@KirksCousin82 жыл бұрын
@@666108 Not really? Maybe found 40 different voices that are as beautiful as hers. Comparing from the current population that's 0.00000005128% of the population. Even if that number is 1000, that's still stupidly low.

@@tjfSIM what you are hearing in her voice is a Mid-Atlantic/ trans-atlantic accent, probably because she was born in and grew up in Maryland (in the Baltimore area). That type of accent was highly sought after in those days and folks such as Judy Garland went to acting schools and had vocal coaches to try to achieve it. Compare Cass's voice accent in this video or her natural speaking voice to any video of Judy speaking or singing, and you will see what I mean. I actually live in Maryland and I honestly never focus much on that manner of speaking because I'm probably so used to hearing it, but some might say it sounds polished or fake. I think it's similar to Hillary Clinton's voice, and a lot of people think she puts on a fake voice for speeches or debates so I don't know if people think the same of anyone from Maryland or who otherwise has that type of accent. You seem to think it is pleasant though, and it's been sought after by so many other people, so I guess it can't be all bad ☺️

Cass Elliot was an icon during the mid-late 1960's to early 70's. She did everything. Sang, acted, and comedy. She was on so many shows as a guest and/or performer. She must have been such a nice beautiful person because it seemed that everyone who knew her loved her. Audiences could feel it too. It's great that her talent still resonates all this time.

Truly an amazing voice❤️ I love her little dance moves too! Not a fan of”Creeque Alley” the line “no one’s getting fat except Mama Cass” Mama Cass was the glue of the band she was an established artist whom sang in a trio, worked in jazz clubs making a decent living. This line had two meanings 1. Mama was bringing in the bread, 2. Possibly a reference to her curves. Here she was carrying the band then John and Michelle write this lyric. She was so talented🙏🏽 Deserved better

Regarding their relationships: Soon after the success of their debut album, Michelle was fired from the group after having a fling with the Byrd's singer Gene Clark. She was replaced by Jill Gibson, who performed a few shows with them and was participating in the recording of their second album when Michelle begged her way back into the group. I believe her brief affair with Denny happened some time after..Cass was in love with Denny, so she was upset that Michelle shagged him, but their relationship quickly mended and they remained friends for the rest of Cass's life..Michelle's marriage to John ended when the group ended. Denny and Cass remained friends. He loved her, but just couldn't get over the weight issue. In his latter years he expressed regret about it. Cass wrote the liner notes for an album Denny released soon after her death. She, along with Michelle, sang background vocals on it. It was the last time her voice was ever recorded.

It was a typical practice in that era for groups to lip-sync on TV shows. Full bands with musicians pretended to play, even though it was obviously mimicry when the track would fade out as it does on the record. In the numerous TV appearances the Mamas and Papas made, they often would sing live over the recorded track. This clip is one example of how they were not afraid to show the pretense of the mimicry. In fact, they made fun of it. At an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, mid song, Michelle is seen singing into a banana like a microphone, and at a point where she should be singing, she take a bit of it! They were playfully defiant about shattering the illusion,

I agree. I find Adele, whisper it, over-rated too. She is a belter but I find no subtlety in her voice; no nuances. Actually, I just don't like her voice. I read about grown men crying at her concerts and can only think it must be the over-inflated ticket prices that are causing them to blub. I don't actually detect much emotion in her voice and it sounds samey to me. I do like Mama Cass's voice though and I admired her as a person.

Cheesteak22. I can't resist so here is my list: Karen Carpenter (obviously), Aretha, Tina Turner, Linda Ronstadt (That girl could sing anything with total respect for the song), Mary Travers, Judith Durham, Carole King, Emmy-lou Harris (the sweetest country voice ever), both ABBA girls, Janis Ian, Rita Coolidge, Melanie (weak but sweet and quirky), Laura Nyro, Dusty Springfield, Carly Simon and two outliers: Eve Graham (late of The new Seekers but a seriously good voice) and Susan Boyle, late of Britain's Got Talent but now a dignified, beautiful singer with a soaring voice.You will probably have picked up there are no modern divas on my list. I can appreciate what their voices can do but I hate what they do with them and how they present themselves. I like plain and simple and standing on a stage in a simple frock or jeans and a jumper and giving us the song. Actually Petula did that too and Sandie and Olivia Newton-John and Kiki Dee, Any advances?

Cass was in love with Denny, even asked him to marry her. He was never attracted to Cass, because of her weight, instead had a thing for Michelle, which the two ended up having an affair while she was married to John. When the affair was discovered it broke Cass's heart, broke up John and Michelle, and put a strain on Michelle and Cass's friendship. The group was never the same after that, and just went through the motions for the last 3 years of the band.
