John barfneck He had a phone but it didn't have signal way out in the middle of nowhere. Who has an emergency locator? I've never heard of that. Got to remember this was almost 2 decades ago when mobiles still had antennas. He went canyoneering himself because he wanted to. Its not a very common hobby where there'd be alot of people willing do to it with you anyways. I bet he regrets not telling anyone where he was going but how often does something like this happen. He probably thought he would be back for dinner. He's not an idiot, infact hes extremely smart to have gotten out of that situation alive. Many people would've died of thirst or blood loss. He used everything he had to survive and find help. He's an incredibly brave man.

He broke his arm bones and had to use the pliers of his multi tool to rip his tendons out. Luckily he had a smaller blade on the multi tool for his skin. Skin is very fragile and easy to cut through. Next time you’re preparing meat to be cooking stop and think that the beef you’re cutting is basically the same as our flesh.

Nathan Mcchristie it took 13 men, a winch and a hydraulic jack to move the boulder so that Ralston's arm could be removed. His arm was then cremated and the ashes given to Ralston. He returned to the accident scene with Tom Brokaw and a camera crew six months later on his 28th birthday to film a Dateline NBC special about the accident and to scatter the ashes of his arm where he said they belong.
