Join Jeff Zweerink and Joseph Bergeron as they discuss new discoveries taking place at the frontiers of science that have theological and philosophical implications, including the reality of God’s existence.
The Man Behind the Shroud
The Shroud of Turin remains one of the most hotly debated artifacts related to Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection. Join us as medical specialist Joe Bergeron discusses what an analysis of the shroud’s image reveals about the man behind the shroud. The data provides abundant evidence supporting the accounts of Jesus’s crucifixion given in the Gospels.

What other crucified man would have a proper Jewish burial, and be wrapped in a shroud? What other crucified man would bear the marks of a crown of thorns? What other crucified man would have a shroud that would be removed 36-72 hours later? (See conversation 2 on this subject) I am eagerly waiting for answers from doubters.

It seems to me that more important than the fact that everything lines up with the gospel accounts of the crucifixion. For whoever this shroud belonged to the fact in all of our technology the only explanation we have been able to find for how this image was made is by a fraction of a millisecond burst of radiation is more powerful than all the energy combined that humankind has ever produced.

Nails were driven through the palms (an intended insult to helping hands). The lower arms were tied by ropes to the beams (most other Crucifixions were done like that as well) The scientific mambo-jumbo we most times seam to be pre-occupied with is poor understanding the culture in 33 AD. No matter where the nails are driven in into the hand. A crucified person would tear his arm off,to free himself from the cross. Even the weight of the person, with the addition of strength of struggling person would tear flesh and even bones off from any part of the hands. As they placed the person on the cross beam, the first thing they would do is to tie his arms by ropes to the beam (so that he cannot get away or put up a struggle to be casually and brutally nailed) The ropes on the hands were left on,thus the weight of the body was actually held by the ropes. The nailing was an additional punishment and inflicting of pain to the crucified Jesus. All that was matted out on Him was to torture Him short of killing Him; insult Him; spit on Him; mock Him with the corrupted plant, that bore thorns due to the fall of man, before crucifying Him to demonstrate our superiority.

I'm skeptical that this was the actual shroud placed over Jesus' body. Some thoughts: (1) In the modern day -- this year included -- there are people in the Philippines who undergo ritual crucifixion near Easter. So I can't imagine a past in which nobody wanted to identify with Jesus enough to undergo crucifixion themselves. Perhaps there were also some that asked that their bodies be made like his in death. (2) In the modern day we think of Jesus as a tall person, around 6 feet, but that is unlikely to be historically accurate. (2) There is nothing in scripture about Jesus' nose being split. (3) The bible states that none of Jesus' bones were broken. I believe this is from an OT prophecy. So if the shroud shows evidence that the shoulders were broken after rigor mortis set in then this person cannot be Jesus. (4) The best location for the nails through the "hands" (read: "arms") that I am aware of would be through the wrist between the ulna and radius which would lock the arm in place. This would also macerate the nerves running to the hands. (Why read hands as arms? It's because language changes over time. Until the era of modern medicine human body language didn't need to be so precise. When Luke spoke of Jesus healing someone lame in their "foot" he must have meant "leg" because nobody is lame in their feet but in their legs! Walking is a function of the legs, not the feet. So what they called the "hand" is our "arm". We've restricted that meaning in the modern era to the part below the wrist. Ditto for legs and feet.) Anyway, since the blood is near the palms this suggests a more modern origin for the shroud after our language changed.

If you are dumb enough to believe the Shroud is a fake, then you must explain how whoever fabricated it must have: 1. Know the precise methods of crucifixion in the first century. 2. Be proficient enough in over 100 scientific disciplines and also collectively outweigh the intelligence of the people who performed hundreds and hundreds of tests on the Shroud and who are not finding any indications of a forgery. 3. Possessed the medical knowledge of a modern expert surgeon. 4. Utilized an art process unknown to any great master, never duplicated before or since. 5. Be able to foresee and approximate principles of photographic negativity that would not be discovered for centuries. 6. Imported a piece of old cloth of Middle Eastern manufacture. 7. Used a coloring agent which would be unaffected by intense heat. 8. Be able to incorporate in his work details (that have only recently been discovered), that the human eye cannot see and that are visible only with the most advanced computer-scanning devices. 9. Be able to reproduce flawlessly, on a nearly flat linen surface, in a single color, undistorted 3-D characteristics of a human body in a 'negative format' on the tops of the threads, while conversely showing the 'blood' as positive and soaking all the way through. 10. Get somewhere the blood of a tortured man and apply it before creating the image. 11. Get limestone from Jerusalem, and pollen particles from the middle east, in special from plants with thorns, that flourish only between March and April.

The SHROUD is 99.999% certain to be the burial linen. The features line up with the GOSPEL 100% even down to the blood type, the punishments Jesus endured, and even the dirt particles on the feet of the SHROUD are travertine argonite, a unique limestone only present at the OLD EAST gate of JERUSALEM that JESUS walked to his CRUCIFIXION. I'm terms of height the SHROUD indicates 5foot 11 inches, tall, but remember the Y chromosome came from GOD so who knows what powerful genes GOD gave JESUS. Jesus was also very muscular, a TECTON by trade! I am a dedicated PhD level Physicist and the image on the SHROUD is not made by human hands. Not only that this cannot be duplicated by ANYONE with modern science!! God Bless ... P.S. BTW.... if shoulders were ripped out of the socket, that involves cartilage and tendons and NOT BROKEN bones, so SCRIPTURE is TRUE about JESUS!!

DuelScreen: 1. Even on your hypothesis that there might have been other men in the past crucified exactly like Jesus, and had asked to be prepared for burial like Him (covered sandwich-style in a linen shroud) you’d still have to show at least one such a shroud with a body imprint like that of the Shroud of Turin: Photographic negative images of the body’s front and back, but not the sides or top of the head. Linen cloths don’t have the properties of photographic films. The image is not made of paint, shows dehydration (not scorching, not discoloration) and shows no capillary action to stain neighboring fibrils (fuzz). The image affects only the very tip of the fibrils, and did not go through the back side of the cloth. So far no archeology findings have come up with another such piece cloth. 2. The image on the Shroud shows the dead man to be from 5’8” to 5’11” tall. 3. Scripture says He had been crowned with thorns and His face viciously slapped by His torturers. The scientific findings say, “Discernible are a number of facial wounds, listed by Willis (cited in Wilson 1978:23) as swelling of both eyebrows, torn right eyelid, large swelling below right eye, swollen nose, bruise on right cheek, swelling in left cheek and left side of chin.” www.shroud.com/pdfs/sorensen2.pdf 4. The image shows no broken bones whatsoever. But since His Body, hanging from the cross for so long, was in rigor mortis, the men who prepared Him for burial had to rearrange His stiff arms to cover His genitals, and might have dislocated one or both shoulders and elbows in the process. Dislocated, not broken. www.shroud.com/meacham2.htm Read all the scientific papers and other papers here: www.shroud.com/menu.htm

the shroud of Turin? from which god? the bible says, John 20:6-7 “…Simon Peter…went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, ( not the shroud ) as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” so one must conclude the god of the shroud of Turin is of the god of this world also known as the devil as he is a liar and the father of lies, or the God of the bible, The Father The Son and The Holy Spirit are liars. it’s simple one is lying and one is telling the truth, as both cannot be true. if you wan’t truth ask me.

Jesus was not wrapped up like a mummy. Those strips were used for biding. Not wrapping. Try to remember that It was *proven* by many dozens of doctors, scientists, archeologists, and other highly trained researchers and tens of thousands of hours of examination that the Shroud most definitely wrapped the body of a severely beaten, scourged and crucified man that was wearing a crown or cap of thorns when he died. Very few people out there, other than atheists, are quite dumb enough to believe that this was someone other than Jesus Christ.

You need to learn a little bit more about this. The shroud is a strip of linen, and there was a head cloth that is also been found. And the ones in the blood flow match the shroud exactly. If you’re going to make profound statement, don’t be so ignorant about the subject matter. Ignorance is where the devil lies.

@@sebbya8328 if you choose to believe the lies that’s up to you, you say “ a strip of linen “ the bible says strips of linen, you say the “blood flow match the shroud exactly, ? was that Jesus nailed through the palms of the hands, as prograde on the crucifix, because that is a lie, if Jesus was nailed in the palms of the hands the body would have fallen off the cross as there is only flesh there, the truth is he was nailed through the wrist bones as this was part of the hand in greek under standing, thus the body would stay on the cross, you say “ there was a head cloth that is also been found “ strange the shroud has the face imprint on it, sorry but no room for a face cloth, ? so where was this supposed face cloth found, the bible says strips of linen and the head cloth ware lying there, so who is the Liar ? the shroud or the bible, i choose choose to believe the bible

royruser, Here's the statement by one of the members of STURP team that investigated the Shroud in 1978, the official research photographer, Barrie Schwortz, who happens to be a Jew: "One has to remember that Jesus and his disciples were Jews and his burial would be conducted according to Jewish law and tradition. The Old Testament requires Jewish men of high stature to be buried in “pure linen raiments.” "The Gospels tell us that the shroud of Jesus was provided by Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man. That makes good sense, since such a cloth would have been expensive by first century standards and would most likely have been imported, quite possibly from Syria. "Jewish custom requires burial in a large single sheet. Once the body is wrapped in the cloth, it must be bound by linen strips to insure the cloth does not fall off when the body is transported. That is not only consistent with a first century Jewish burial, but also with contemporary burials. "Of course, the Gospels also tell us there was a second cloth, folded and separate from the other... So what is this second cloth and why was it there? Once again, Jewish law requires that anything containing the victim’s blood or bodily fluids be buried with the body. Once Jesus was taken down from the cross, his face and head were wrapped in a smaller cloth or napkin which absorbed the blood and pleural fluids from his nose and mouth. We still follow a similar procedure today and typically cover the face of the dead immediately upon their passing. Frankly, it is the preser vation of this second cloth and its presence in the tomb that convinces me this was an authentic Jewish burial." To read all the scientific findings and other papers by the research team, go to Schwortz' site: www.shroud.com/
