An Australian politician who is willing to say generous things about a political opponent makes Malinauskas more of an exception to the rule here. Even in the pandemic context that is an uncommon thing to see.

Banning political donations in elections or massively restricting them would do more for democracy than any other measure. This has been obvious to most people for a long time. Sadly the likelihood of this in most of the world seems close to zero. Also I agree that acknowledging something the political opposition gets right adds to credibility. I thought this as soon as Peter said it and the following remarks only confirmed my opinion. The democratic West badly needs new approaches to restore the loss of trust in politics and politicians.

South Australia has been at the forefront of electoral reform for decades. If compulsory voting is popular with those bound by it, there is less need to justify it. The same can be said of preferential voting and the somewhat unexpected success of the teals Another advantage is that the electoral authorities are required to ensure that polling booths are well-resourced and easy to access and that the experience of voting is a positive one. Hence the democracy sausages which have grown without formal organisation.

Peter's comment about Baltic migrants merging into the community mirrors my experience as a person born in the Netherlands. Its great that Dutch migrants have assimilated so well but sad that there aren't many Dutch shops and cafe's around!

I don’t like the extent to which donations carry power in UK politics either. No one seems to know where Conservative Party donations come from, or what donors get for it. But are Labour donations any different? We know Unions expect something for their money and cause mayhem when they don’t get it; but where else does money come from? We need donations out of politics, the only issue is how.

Canada strictly limits political donations & uses a per vote subsidy system. And banned the aristocracy back in the 1930s.

If there's to be an honest democracy; one person one vote, one person up to $1000 political donation. End lobby group money, business or unions 'buying' politicians and parties, donations only from the vote registered public.

Is the trick not to have very transparent financing of the poliicans and the political parties? I am ok with soem Mp buying up farmlands and getting donatiosn fromthe farmers club but it shoudl be open when he/she then makes new suggestions for farming subsidies increaase, based on owning the land etc. People must be free to ask and work for ... very biased things but we should know who/what they are working for?

All political payments should be through a single account, then transferred to a specified recipient. That would at least provide more vision on who is paying for what.

I think you need anonymous donations. Especially in the US, the cost of a campaign is too high. But party politics can homogenise and polarise it all.
@Coops3215 ай бұрын
I don't think anonymous donations is really practical or possible- there would be texts, calls emails etc even if the official channel the money goes through is clear

Good luck to anyone wanting to change the UK voting system. First past the post works for the two main parties. Compulsory voting, persuading MPs via this podcast is hilarious. Getting rid of of the second chamber ain’t gonna happen.

Rory rather stating the obvious that most donors don’t give you money for nothing. A good enough reason to ban donations, although Vaughan Gethin doesn’t want to admit it
@rogersimpson65095 ай бұрын
The two major parties out here don't want change as there's too much benefit from the current system. That is, Labor party from the unions and conservatives from right wing oligarchs like Murdoch, Rinehart, etc... malinauskus seems unique as he's successful through his own capabilities..

Not sure if it's discussed in this episode, watching as I write, but questions for Rory and Alistair - A. does a system run on political donations protect against populism to some extent? ie people with money are probably not wanting big changes to the status quo (except perhaps trade unions (?)) B. do political donations and lobbying protect against explicit corruption? ie there will be corruption of some sort, best to legalise and regulate

I don't think it's that unreasonable to ask. It is much easier to follow UK politics because of the similar political structure than something like Japan or Korea. And it isn't completely unreasonable when you consider military alliances and AUKUS.
