My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

#cooking #selfreliance #cabin
It gets warm in the cabin from my first 24+ hour fire in the woodstove while I chink the walls of the log cabin, cook a few meals, sharpen my knife by the fire, track animals through the forest and practice my archery skills on a target behind the cabin. I flush ruffed grouse while walking through the forest in the snow. Drone footage of the cabin in the snow adds perspective and shows the remoteness of the cabin and how vast the Canadian wilderness beyond the cabin is, especially since the forest and the ground is more visible with no leaves on the trees and a fresh dusting of snow. I finish the stone floor at the entranceway and under the fireplace as well and I need the long burning fire to keep it from freezing while it cures.
To answer many questions last week about the wood splitter I used to process firewood, I talk about it in more detail and explain where to buy it (The man with the axe). I have many axes, each with its own purpose, and this chopper1 axe is probably my most unique and singular in purpose.
In my weekly rant, I talk about respecting woman, why I like having strong women in my life and how Survival Lilly deals with the negativity and abuse she receives on her KZbin channel.
At the end of the video in my self reflections, I answer the question, “how did I get out of $750,000 of debt?”, and why it will never happen again.

I so appreciate your comments about strong women. I grew up helping my Grandad farm, driving the great big tractors (helping plant, harvest, plowing, pulling the grain trailers to the elevator. Little bitty 100 lbs me, tiny woman, learned to do all this by learning to let the machinery work as it was meant to work. I met my husband, a long distance truck driver, and he was amazed that little bitty me knew how, and could actually drive, big machinery. We drove 2 semi(s) for the same company, him in one, me in the other, 48 states and Canada. Every 8 weeks we would shut down, go home to the UP of MI for 3 weeks and build on our homeplace on 20 acres that we were renovating from the 100 year old homestead. While we were home, my husband would help cook, clean, wash dishes etc and I would help build. He always said that if little bitty me could help him and work like a man doing it, he wasn't too proud to help by washing a dish, cooking or whatever else it took, that was commonly known as women's work, while we were home. Love of my life. Sadly he died, at 42 years old, from Viet Nam war, Agent Orange, inflicted injuries. We never got to finish our home place because after he died I sold and moved close to my family. At any rate, the jest of this is "this tough Marine Viet Nam war vet" had all the respect in the world for a woman and what a woman could do.

I am retired, but my wife still works (her choice). As she's still working, I feel an obligation to pick up a larger share of the domestic duties. Consequentially, I try to have things in order at the house when she comes home at night. She's still involved in the domestic aspects, but I do all of my laundry (and what of hers she'll allows), do all of the grocery shopping (oddly, I actually kind of enjoy that) and probably do 65-70% of the cooking, along with other household chores. And frankly, it has given me a keener awareness of the importance of ALL chores and heightens my appreciation for those things that she dutifully did mostly by herself before me late epiphany. She has never been shy about helping in any labors that are within her physical capacity (and sometimes beyond). Your message is spot-on, Shawn. As always, thanks so much for sharing. Steve

Thank you so much for your comments. Lilly inspired me to go out and build my own shelter, bushcrafting 101 with my zero skills. It took me three days, but I did it and I thank Lilly for her supportive, informative vids and her willingness to show her courage in a male-dominated genre.you said it: the word is PARTNER. My husband and I absolutely share duties, and lift each other up every day with humor, communication, equality and respect each other.

I too am married to a strong woman and I am not a submissive male by any means. For 20 years our marriage has worked because we know the value of each other and try to play off our strengths. We aren’t perfect, but we are committed to the act of loving one another and our children. Lily is a great role model for my girls and I stand with you in defending her my friend.

Great video again. // Rant - well said. When I was five years old (1956) my father said. "men and women are equal and have complimentary skills sets. Look after the women in your life and always show respect." 61 years later I can still visualize him saying those words to me. // I cannot understand the negativity and rudeness on social media; but I have come to the conclusion that it must be personal inadequacy that drives their anger. For the 50 years of my working life I was surrounded by talented and highly capable folk; so now in retirement I now see the other sad and rude side of life that inhabit social media. // Your lantern. I was thinking a pulley system from the roof peak just forward of the loft. On the floor, have the lantern on the draw rope at workable height. When you move to the loft, pull the lantern up to loft height and safely climb the ladder. You can unhook the lantern to move it by your loft bed. Reverse the lantern process to descend the the floor level. Fire safety and ladder safety. (I guess you have a safety process). Your videos my me think and enjoy. I enjoy your meals almost as much as you do. Regards from Thailand, Greg

I just had to comment on this video. I started following you once I watched Joe's video. I never expected to enjoy your channel so much. I love to see your cabin being constructed, and I really enjoy your self reflections. Your rant was so on point. I'm a young woman, and have grown up surrounded by people who always treated me like I could do anything. So to realize that there are so many out there who treat woman like crap has been... well shocking and disheartening. But it's really reassuring to know that there are plenty of people out there who aren't intimidated by strong women, and believe men and women should be partners, not one dominate the other.

Thank you for speaking out about the inappropriate and misogynistic comments aimed at Survival Lily. It is distressing to find such inhumane remarks leveled at someone doing what they love -without hurting anyone else- and doing it well enough to live off their passion! :-) I intermittently watched Survival Lily, and because of your addressing the nastiness, I now subscribe to Survival Lily. I grew up with strong women around me, my mother, sister, granny and aunts. They where tough as nails even thou most of them where small in size they never was afraid of doing hard work. My granny and her sister had a butcher shop, and came from a family of small farmers. From them I learned that you can do anything you set your mind to. My grandpa, who also came from a farmers family, always showed such a love and respect for my granny, that showed my that a relationship is a partnership between equals. My women and life partner since over 30 years, is my best friend and we try to share the workload equal. She hates to cook, but I like it so I gladly do that. She does the cleaning, which I really hates, and I do all the shopping instead. Other things we take turns on. I don't feel less of a man because I like to cook or getting the groceries. We do stuff to help each other and that brings us together. Men that don't respect women are weak and unsure of their own abilities.

In my Inuit culture, women are the strongest members of our communities. They were the ones who, historically, looked after the families and ran the communities while the men were off hunting/fishing/gathering, and you can still see this in our communities today. They were the ones who prepared the skins, sewed the warm clothing, and kept the households running. Without the wisdom and strength of women, I would literally not be here today. We must honour and support women in every way!

My Self Reliance Apropos of nothing in particular: when I worked in the woods many moons ago, all my work gear was made by Fjällräven. When I moved to London in 1988, I bought a nap sack made by Fjällräven. I use it every day, and it is still the bag I carry to work in the summer in the woods. Very special place in my heart, that company!

Thanks for showing off that Axe, I have had a few viewers tell me I needed to purchase that axe. Nice to see it in action. I am also an outdoor woman that has a youtube channel and I find that I have to reserve time to filter out the comments from people that don't agree with a woman being in the outdoors alone. However, I have to admit, the comments I get are more good and inspiring than hateful and I am truly happy about that. I hope the world accepts everyone for enjoying the outdoors as our outdoor world is shrinking and the cities are growing.

Where you start to discuss women getting hate for being into 'guy' sports like the outdoors, fishing, etc. I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. It was pretty normal for women to enjoy the outdoors along side men. I get a ton of hate comments and private messages, at least 1/3rd of them is 'You are even WORSE than Survival Lilly somehow!' and 'I'll keep an eye out for you next time I'm in the woods and we'll see who 'wins' out in the wild'. I feel awful for Lilly. I know I get hardly a fraction of the flack, threats, and disrespect she gets.

Enjoying your channel, keep up the good work! Good take on gender, no time for hating on that, too. I got woke many years ago on "the fairer sex" when a young Mexican gal ran me ragged trying to keep up on a jobsite, lol. I've been partnering with the same gal for 35 years and she has shown me what the real world is about!

You are a great resource for knowledge and inspiration, as a 35 yr old with a wife and kids who has recently became debt free this kind of inspiration has effected me in many positive ways to do more, get out more, and do the things that interest me and my family to bring us closer together and enjoy more time together. Thank you for sharing your hard work and views on life with people like us who gain from it in many different ways. You're a great guy for being honest and sticking up for Lilly, if we only had more people with the same level of values and morals the world would be better off for it.

Edward Seth I know right!!! 🤣 His food always looks so delicious. It makes me think about the way people in the 1800s who lived on the frontier must have eaten. Really big portions of fresh food with a good amount of calories that was fit for sustaining a man who had to work out in the woods or the fields all day.

Hey Shawn, Thanks for your piece on Lilly and respect for women generally. I just got one thing to add: If someone thinks about disrespecting a woman, take a long look at yourself first: are you really so faultless? So together? So superior? If you think you are, maybe you're not humble enough. Thanks Shawn for all you do. Its my go-to wind-down time after a long day of stress.

Hey Shawn 😁 great to see you, I've been waiting all week for an update 😀 looking good.. You and the cabin. I actually noticed the axe splitter from last time and I'm familiar with it too 😉 seen it on (crazy Russian hacker) Taras Kul's channel a while back... I'm strange like that.. I know some stuff i have no reason to know, i have never even owned an axe 😂 I'm just in love with bushcraft i guess..... Totally agree with what you said in your rant 👍 respect and positivity is always a good thing, my rule is keep the negative for people who deserve it, there's a lot of bad people doing bad things that deserve your negative feed back.. Someone doing their own thing and not bothering you don't.. Jusy wanted to add something.. Today i wad diagnosed with a medical condition, thst will limit me for the rest of my life.. I may never be able to do many of the things I dreamed of doing... And I'm in a bad state mentally and emotionally trying to cope, but when I watched your video I forgot about it for a while and got carried away with this comment.. So i had to thank you ❤️ your like.. That's how much positivity you shine through to us.. Thank again Shaw, and sorry for the long comment - your biggest fan in Syria ❤️

I find myself attracted to strong women. It makes me think about how strong women had to be, during the frontier times and on the harsh prairies. They were not scared to defend their home and family, whether it be from a bear, or band of Indian braves. Women have fought along side men from before the time of the vikings, to the eastern Russian front of WW2 and beyond to defend their homeland and loved ones!

Hi Jeremy, make sure and look up the story of the Russian snipers (yes, female) during WWII. One of them had 360 confirmed kills to her name, and many of them were enemy snipers. When she came to tour the US with Eleanor Roosevelt, all the idiot US newspeople could ask her about was fashion, hair, and makeup!!. Imagine thinking about fashion when you are sniping Nazi's!! Patooie.

Hmm, check out the history of the Cathars (If I spelled that right) in Europe. As for modern day... a woman good at math calling in an artillery strike while on the move, or a man too proud to let the person better suited to the paticular situation call in the artillery strike? Who'd a person rather have call in danger close shells. Remaining in 1 piece is better than some absurd pride thing. Underestimate a person based on a bias, you only give them an advantage. Only person to consistently take me in knife fighting was a woman, guess that could mean I'm not a man... But what does that make the guys I'd routinely take out? ;)

Metrix Shield And where are Cathars today? Exactly. They are no more. You only make my point stronger. See how easily I defeat you. You cannot thrive as a man by following ways of a woman.
