My biggest problem is this is a great episode on paper, but there was no reason for it to be only 38 minutes. So much happened and we didn’t get a chance to let different events breathe. The Darksaber is destroyed and its not brought up again, same with Moff Gideon dying. Things happen and the story just moves on from it. Just a simple conversation between Din and Bo about what it means for Mandalorians going forward without the Darksaber would make the impact feel more meaningful

I think the point of the adoption scene is to show Din fully and officially adopting Grogu as in SON. Throughout the series, although other people refers to Din as Grogu's dad, Din never actually said that himself, always calling Grogu is ward. The conversation with the Armourer in that scene was basically the Armourer subtlety coaxing Din to officially adopt Grogu as accordance to the Creed because she knew it was the way.

As an actual adopted person, thank you. Seriously. Thank you. This finale and overall season has its (glaring) flaws in my eyes, but that scene was not one of them to me. Din has always spiritually been there for Grogu, ever since he went back to save him in The Sin from S1. That's the first time he really looked at the boy and went, "Damn it, I DO care!" So when they became a clan of two in the S1 finale, that's when he became his *caretaker and father, or father figure.* Since then, the only way Din and Grogu have gone is up, and by the end of S2, it was no longer a matter of titles to me. Din was Grogu's DAD then, not merely his father/father figure. His dad. So to finally have this formal adoption moment take place is something I've been waiting for. Something I knew would happen. I've got my gripes, but Din loving his boy is not and never will be one of them.
@SeanChriscole Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there was nothing wrong with the adoption scene. It's a powerful moment some are thinking about too quickly rather than thinking about what it means to the individuals the moment it's for. Sometimes audiences don't truly understand something unless they've lived it for themselves.

I thought, that when they became a clan of two, he officially adopted grogu in season one. Honestly it gives me Disney thinks we're stupid vibes. They can't trust the audience to understand that so they literally had to spell it out, but that's just my opinion, no disrespect to anyone who found that scene heartwarming. My biggest concern is the helmet problem. How do din officially adopt a child and still not feel comfortable with him seeing his face.

@@FatGuyInSpace I don’t think he’s uncomfortable with showing his son his face, if that was the case then he would not have removed his helmet the second time. Almost every bad thing that happened to Mandalore in the past 30 years in-canon was tied to it in some way, and it's fitting that after it's introduction back in '09 marked the end of Mandalore's short-lived peace and the (on-screen) beginning of the division and infighting that culminated in them being too weak to resist the purge, it's destruction would mark Mandalore being reclaimed by its united people.

I think this review highlights the pitfalls of watching a show with very specific expectations. You end up deciding in your mind what should happen, and this risks blinding you to the actual direction the show takes. For example, it's been pretty clear since very early on in this season that the show had no intention of painting any group of Mandalorians as having the "wrong" beliefs. The season never led me to believe even for a moment that Mando might leave the Children of the Watch or stop caring about keeping his helmet on. On the contrary, a central theme of the season is that the differences between the groups are okay (maybe even good), as long as they learn to live in harmony with one another. Not trying to invalidate anyone's opinions, of course. But I went in without any specific expectations (aside from wanting to see Gideon defeated for good), and I enjoyed it immensely. This season has become my favorite. I think fans often rob themselves of a good experience by doing things like predefining what they see as character growth.
@Diana-qp2rw Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Many fans have to many specific expectations about what should happen and then they are disappointed not because what really happens is bad but because it’s not what they expected. I thought for a while that maybe Mando would take his helmet off again at some point or change his views, but I was never too sure of that and quickly saw that it’s probably not about one group being right. So I never had these kind of expectations. The same goes for the finale, I had my ideas and suspicions, but I was never convinced I was right, so I couldn’t be disappointed because I wasn’t right. I enjoyed the whole season a lot, especially the last two episodes.

@erikstevenson8508 Жыл бұрын
The whole business with the cruiser seems like it was reverse engineered exclusively to have the cruiser be the mechanism for destroying the base. At least from the number of fighters we actually see attacking it in the show, it doesn't make sense to abandon that ship - the Mandalorians had the firepower to win the battle in the air. That cruiser is worth a huge amount of money even if they didn't want it for offensive/defensive purposes, it was wild to just abandon a huge asset like that.

Presumably the TIEs shot down the cruiser then flew back under the clouds to report to Gideon (and warn him about the falling ship). I loved that, even as I knew that would be a sticking point for a segment (and given that you hated that as well, possibly a LARGE segment) of the fanbase. I thought it was a great subversion of the whole cliched "chosen one" storytelling devices that Star Wars often falls back on. The Mandalorians don't follow Bo because she wields some ancient relic. This finale is very wholesome for me. I just rewatched season 1 ep4 yesterday and there was a scene where the widow from the village was asking Din to take a break or let Grogu to play with other children and have a normal childhood. And also when Greef suggested Din to have a vacation after he handed over Grogu to the imperial, Din rejected Greef’s idea as well. Also, in the first season, Din wasn’t care about the moral of his job, that’s why he hunted and handed over Grogu in the first place! I think the ending of this finale actually showed that Din is now not just working all the time but chilling with his son, and he now chooses his job for doing good. Apart from that, I think this finale is pretty stand out for me. There are different SW shows now and their finale usually have some cliffhangers, which usually lifted up hype for the next season and is pretty exciting to watch. But for this one, I found it really peaceful and relieved, since after what Din and Grogu have been through in S1,2&3 and BOBF, their well deserved break finally came, which is something Din once thought impossible to have in S1. Besides, although this seems like it’s “End of Story“, I am pretty sure Din and Grogu will have their next adventure after taking the break as the armorer set them off to their journey. P.S. I wanted to point out that when Grogu saving Din and Bo, the score there was the same as the score from The Prince of Egypt when the Red Sea was separated, which is one of my favourite animations.

I’m so glad the Dark Saber has been destroyed. In an immersive way it’s good for the Mandolorians to have it off the table. In a real world view it takes some lazy writing tropes off the table. I felt last week, after the Shadow Council meeting, it was very obvious that Gideon was on his own agenda and was going to have to be dealt with, either by The Council or other means to make way for Thrawn. Other means seems to have been The Mandolorians which is a good story arc for them as a people. I think season 4 reverts back to Din/Grogu. We will see the big bad development of the current timeline via Ahsoka with that eventually pulling in Din and the Mandolorians (and everyone else) in the climactic movie wrap up after Ahsoka season2. As a whole I’m fine with the season. I think there was little to zero idea that this “TV universe” would be SO SO successful when Mando S1 Ep1 was released. It’s clear with the success that there has been a large pivot in mindset behind the scenes and this season is the first on screen representation of that. For that reason it is a little clunky as it now has different long term goals. With that in mind I felt it did the best it could. I’m not upset about “side mission” episodes like the CSI episode either. These one offs are good palate cleansers between expositional plot heavy episodes. Even X-files would toss in these sorts of one off episodes from time to time. Finally, MAJOR feels for Kanan Jarrus during the moment with Grogu protecting himself, Bo and Din from the explosive destruction of the Imperial Base.
@Zeemis Жыл бұрын
I just finished the episode myself, I felt like it was just okay. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great. There was no big plot reveal, like The Armorer being a villain, or some big cameo like Luke Skywalker. In narrative exposition, you have initial conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. It felt like the climax was weak, and there was little to no falling action. We had initial conflict and rising action last episode, finding out about Moff Gideon's imperial remnant being on Mandalore, and then the initial storming the castle event. We continue with rising action with the battle in this episode followed up with the Moff Gideon fight being the climax. He loses, and we get no falling action. Falling action would have been a few minutes of closing lose ends, like what happened to Pershing and Elia Kane. Or Grogu speaking his first words, which would set excitement for a season 4 or movie. We have no information about Thrawn setting up for what's to come either. It was a good season, but the climax and falling action were just weak. It felt very safe.

There’s still some stuff I’d need to rewatch again or reflect on as I watch this video over time, but I did really enjoy this episode on a first watch and thought it was great (IMO of course). The final fight was EPIC, with Bo-Katan charging in with the Darksaber with all of the Mandalorian and the Armorer bashing troopers midair, Din salvaging weapons off troopers “John Wick” style (stun batons were such an awesome treat to see post-TFA), and Din and Bo working together to fight Gideon. I was a bit taken back seeing the Darksaber crushed just like that, but after discussing it elsewhere, it does offer Mandalore to choose a capable leader based on their qualities and not just a laser sword. And as Bo said, “Mandalorians are stronger together.” And the finale does feel like a bow tie to how everything culminated at this point. Mandalore is taken back, with the Great Forge reignited, all of the Mandalorians uniting together, and nature starting to heal. IG-11 has a return as a Marshall for Navarro. And Din now has his own little place (in between missions) to settle down with his apprentice/son Din Grogu. I do understand if there are a few threads still open or could have been done a bit differently, but this was just a pretty great and satisfying episode and finale for me.

I'm fine with destroying the Darksaber, but it feels like a missed opportunity to make it random collateral damage instead of a character moment. Imagine, for example, if Gideon stole it back from Bo-Katan and then she shot it out of his hand to keep him from hitting Din with it, choosing to sacrifice one vision of Mandalore for another. Same overall effect, but more thematic impact.

I really liked most of this season! But I think like this season could have really benefited from being maybe 12 episodes instead of 8 to take a little more time developing not only the story of the Mandalorians reclaiming Mandalore, but also give Din Djarin and Grogu some more time to develop as well as giving more time for the big powerful moments (Bo Katan getting the dark saber, the dark saber being destroyed) to feel more meaningful.

Fun episode but a few too many story points that were a bit questionable? How did grogu get in to the base (we last saw him with the fleeing Mandos)? How was R5 anywhere near the base? Wasn't he with the Gauntlet? He certainly wasn't on the Mando boat right from last week... Jetpack don't run out fuel now? And I don't think a jetpack has enough velocity (or fuel) to escape the atmosphere? And you'd think Gideon has better controls on his clones? Not just in the walkway to his control center. And what does the Creed say about removing helmets in front of family? Shouldn't a parent and child be able to see their faces? Anyway, lots of questions but like the "reset" we will see for the story next season

This season was put in a tough spot. With Din and Grogu being reunited in BOBF and Rangers of the new republic being scrapped, there seems like a lot was ran through. Hopefully with season 4 we can distance from this and start a new plot line
@peacock0328 Жыл бұрын
I agree. It would have been better to have Din reunite with Grogu in S3 of The Mandalorian, not in BoBF. Unfortunately, I heard that there was some studio interference with the overall story (much to the annoyance of the show writers) since Grogu is now a cash cow for Disney, and they needed him present for S3 in its entirety. This could possibly explain why Din and Grogu take a back seat as far as character development in this season.
@cm275 Жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the season quite a bit for the most part but they obviously had to do a bit of reset to resolve the Grogu training arc and hit the story beats from Rangers that were needed to advance the overall Thrawn story. Hot take: I still wanted the Rangers of the New Republic series, even without Cara Dune. Maybe introduce some Legends pilots like Curran Horn or something.

I think we are forgetting this series is a western-type of story, and the writers ended this season showing us that. He involved himself in bigger plots, but is still about a mercenary that became some sort of a hero and now is trying to help in his new situation. Obviously next season is gonna be about Thrawn's return and Mando is gonna be involved with the New Republic and Mandalore. And about the destruction of the Darksaber I think is gonna rise new conflicts between mandalorians, or at least they open up that possibility.

I think the episode title, “The Spies” is simply referring to Bo Katan’s scouting party. Spy can refer to reconnaissance, it doesn’t always have to mean espionage. We have to remember that it’s other Mandos that label them a “cult.” And as we know, just because a character says something doesn’t make it true. So instead of a rejection of certain spiritual-ritual forms, we instead get an evolution of the people who use those forms being less exclusivist about their forms, while continuing to value their forms. In the context of themes, this fits with two important ones: 1) That one can have a disciplined spiritual life (the Jedi) without being fascists about it (the Sith), and 2) the differences are positive and that the erasure of differences is a colonialist / imperialist project. From the perspective of the philosophy of religion in our world, we have to remember that Secularism per se is essentially Northern European Protestant Christianity as it developed in the contexts of the European Renaissance, but without God-talk. Hence, it is often used in colonialist / imperialist endeavors tto negate or undermine differences, particularly religious and cultural differences that differ from Euro-North American developments-especially when those religious or cultural differences are perceived as disruptive to the capitalist order of the planet. That is: When they can’t be (easily or effectively) commodified. This is not to dismiss rightful criticisms of religious materialism (the preferred way of understanding “fundamentalism”) or the pernicious effects of various authoritarian cults. Instead, it’s a way of understanding that various religious cultural forms can carry real meaning for the folks who use them. And we have to remember: The Mandalorian has gone out of its way to show us that the forms of the Children are voluntary. Sure, it can be difficult to leave a group, and people can be dicks about your leaving, but difficult dicks does not equal “cult.” We’re just dealing with real people. And as a philosopher of religion, it’s interesting to me to see the subtle ways Favereau has pointed out how much the Children’s issues with outsiders stems from a post-imperialist-genocide need to protect themselves.

We still don't know *why* keeping their helmets on is such a focal part of the creed for the Children of the Watch. Without that info, I think it's impossible to judge whether it's a "good" or "bad" tradition. I wonder if it's because they seem to be largely made up of foundlings. Without being Mandalorian by blood or by birth, strict adherence to the creed is probably crucial to defining themselves as Mandalorian. The helmets themselves are also a powerful symbol of that cultural identity, and probably even more so for those who have elected to follow the creed, rather than taking it for granted as a birth right.

A thing that i did enjoy quite a bit was the fact that Gideon, like the Empire, does not really learn from his mistakes and gets taken down by the consequences of his own actions again. The first time was by abducting Grogu and forcing the intervention of the rescue party and Luke Skywalker. This second time its the attack on the fleet, which technically suceeded, but prompted Axe to crash the cruiser into the base which took out Gideon himself and the base as a whole. It has a certain poetry to it that Gideon not only got taken out by the consequences of his own actions, but also by the very thing he lost the last time he lost. Plus, i think it was quite fitting that Axe chose the end to something he probably considered to be "his" ship and i liked that he chose to get out and not go the usual trope of going down with the ship.

I love that the writers refuse to make Mando take his helmet off and leave it off. I just love to see the fans angry at the fact that it never happens. 😂 I loved this episode despite every criticism. “Living with honor” makes you a good person and yes that’s a part of being a Mandalorian, and it’s part of their culture, but wearing a helmet, wearing that Armour, saying *this is the way* , reigniting the forge and reciting the creed these customs are unique to Mandalorians, it’s what makes them special. So making them take off their helmets, making them cease reciting the creed, stopping their baptisms is sacrificing what makes them unique in order to have the basic principles that every culture should already have. Say what you want about the children of the watch but they are very unified, very disciplined and clearly love their people enough to fight with their own people that they disagreed with for the better of Mandalore. If they were the militant cult that the fandom is making them out to be, they would not have gone to help the other Mandalorians.

You commented on how little we see Gideon in season 3, but I felt that was pretty consistent with the prior seasons. We only see him in episodes 7 and 8 of season 1, and while he is in episodes 3,5, and 6 of season 2 (in addition to episodes 7 and 8), the three extra episodes have less than 5 minutes of Gideon total. It's what makes him such a good villain. We don't need to see him a lot to know he must have some part to play in what is happening. And now, with Gideon gone (most likely), I wonder if Elian Kane will start to work for a different warlord. It is interesting speculation on whether Hux learns what happened to Pershing, at Gideon's order, to deliberately set project Necromancer back. And if so, what "reward" Kane might earn for her loyalty. After all, someone that deep in the New Republic bureaucracy would still be very useful to the remenant.

Think about it, this thing can only be won in combat and has been used by countless evil people to take over Mandalore. My headcanon is that it's like the one ring, quietly corrupting those who wield it and stirring up division. Tarre Vizla can be the Isildur, who defeated Darth Bad guy and took the unique black kyber crystal as a testament to his victory. Summed up how I felt pretty well, I feel this episode brought the rest of the season down as certain earlier episodes that felt like they were building up something fell flat after seeing their stories resolved.
@BlipBloop33 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. It was always leading to Grogu becoming a son to Din and a Mandolorian. This closed that plot line nicely.

I liked the Pershing episode and was interested to see where it went despite everyone else complaining, now it just feels like the only purpose of that episode was to show us Gideons assistant working undercover for the New Republic. We didn’t even see Pershing again or find out what happened to him and why she led him on that wild goose chase through the star destroyer

I was mostly content with most of this season but yeah this definitely drags the season down…way too many plot points and not nearly enough resolutions, and the the ones we got were clumsy and convenient. 8 episodes weren’t enough, all the cameos became distracting after a while, and again this episode was disjointed and rushed.

@@BlipBloop33 except there were 30 other plot points that didn’t get resolved and were brought up for no reason. This finale was rushed and disjointed and everything addressed was conveniently wrapped up clumisily…this was poorly written

It is ironic that in Boba Fett series the main hero was at some times pushed to the background... same as Mando in his series xD

It was decent episode. It felt a bit as if something was missing. I wonder if Gideon is alive or one of his clones. Also I enjoyed that Din used new double westar blasters which is as powerfull as the previous model.

It was incredibly satisfying to see the TIE Interceptors launching one after another, and emerging from atmosphere - awesome ship cinematography this episode. It was fun to hear Binary named onscreen. I can't remember another time white that's happened. I loved the use of ray shields to divide and conquer opponents like in _The Phantom Menace,_ but with the hero doing it this time. You could tell that the Imperials were scared to face him in small numbers. I honestly thought for a moment that we'd see Ian McDiarmid in a tube. I wasn't expecting Gideon, but it makes sense given his remark in the previous episode about putting himself in the Dark Trooper armour. I really wish we could have seen any fighting from them, though, or at least seen Gideon himself with the Force to add something to the final fight with him. I didn't understand the title until you talked about the return of life/people to Mandalore. I was expecting to see Thrawn at the end. And why call rhe precious episode The Spies? The "biblical word for scouts" reasoning is pretty lame, in my opinion. These two could have used better names - The Survivors and The Reclamation, for instance. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Gideon survived; surely his armour can protect him from fire. However, I understand the thematic idea of him dying because he stands alone. I just want more Giancarlo Esposito, since each season has had so little Gideon screentime. I definitely agree on some things going unelaborated or happening offscreen. When those comic adaptations catch up to Season 3, I hope they take the chance to show us moments such as Mandalorians learning the Darksaber is gone.

Overall, I give the season a 6/10. I enjoyed the cast and certain concepts, but I felt things were just jumbled together, which made it dell disorganized to me. And I feel they played it safe by not having the Armorer or any other Mandalorian be a spy like many theorized and Gideon cloning himself and not Palpatine. Maybe they're saving the best for the movie that was just announced. It wasn't bad, but it could've been better.

I really love the action pack ep. When we got to see Din's visor POV, its got me into start of mission vibe for video games. The fight between Din and the commando was so much fun. Din and Bo teaming up to take on Gideon was a nice "Mandalorians are stronger together" because Bo and Din grew up so differently and yet they work together. The Dark saber i may not agree with what happen to it but I understand why because it move away from Bo needing the saber to lead (Bo has been able to lead the covert in a mission without the saber showing that she can lead without it).

I think I felt the same as you. There was some stuff I liked and it was definitely entertaining but the story fell kinda flat for me and I didn't feel like the resolutions to this seasons major plotlines were super interesting.

When the Mandalorian used that one troopers flamethrower against the other I heard Jango’s death cry from the Bounty Hunter video game.

I loved the season 1 finale. Gideon with the darksaber was an insane reveal! I loved season 2 finally because of Luke showing up out of nowhere and Din removing his helmet. I liked this finale because it is a happy ending for Mandalorians, Din, and Grogu. However, I cannot love it because it felt like "the easy way out". Like you, Alex, I would have liked to see Din go through more character growth. What he said to Bo last week about the darksaber, why not share that wisdom with the rest of The Children of the Watch? Why do we need to keep these helmets on when all that should matter is that we are actually good people??? And remove the helmet...then little by little the rest do the same. No need to hide our faces anymore.

I like that the Children of the Watch keep their helmets on because it shows that people with different beliefs can still live together and accept each other. It seems like everyone can decide for themselves now if they want to keep their helmet on or take it off instead of having to believe the same first before they can live together as Mandalorians. I thought this was much more powerful than it would have been of the Children had all taken their helmets off.

What i really like about the series is how it feels like a video game: main quest, side quests, npc and side characters helping. In particular in this last episode, the shields fight collecting new weapon on every "level", the boss fight with Gideon and the guards, and how grogu support din with the force (similarly as merrin with cal)

Very thankful that Andor was so good. Kenobi and now Mando S3 just fell short, and maybe thats because we had high expectations for those shows and Andor was just "hey, its a story about that dude from Rogue One, it might be cool." Will be very weary going into Ahsoka when it eventually arrives.

Untapped potential left me with a slightly underwhelming feeling for a S3 finale. Still really enjoyed the season as a whole, but I thought there could have been more jaw dropping excitement at the end (spy reveal, Maul callback, mythosaur, etc.). I’ll never be mad about Grogu laughing at Praetorian guards though. Pure comedy.

The Spies from Episode 7 were The Mandalorians themselves, spying out a new home. Mandalorians reflect the story of the Tweleve Tribes of Israel and this part was from The Book of Numbers, The twelve spies.

I never thought the title could refer to only Din Djarin. It can refer to any Mandalorian, or even just Mandalorians in general. Anyone can be the Mandalorian. He was the main Mandalorian of the first season,but then it branched out. At least, that’s how it has felt to me that the writers are going with.
