@@eiler1987 The sarlacc is an intelligent creature that deliberately keeps its victims alive to psychologically torture them during digestion. There's nothing to suggest that the flying creature was intelligent in any way to do the same. Plus if it is imitative of birds of prey on Earth then the kid would've been placed inside the nest and eaten the same day. There's zero chance of him surviving that long. This whole episode is just lazy writing to create justification for a future episode when Bo inevitably decides to lead the clan to revitalize Mandalore as the new ruler of the Mandalorians. Probably leading to a conflict between her and the armorer

If you compare the Krate Dragon episode from Season 2 where they work with the Tuskin Raiders to kill the worm, there's a clear contrast with the quality of writing, plot, and even logic in the action sequences compared to this season's episodes. Especially this random monster / rescue plot that has tons of plot holes, bad writing and is much shorter

I had a revelation upon watching this episode: the me that was a little kid would have absolutely loved it. I think the Mandalorian started out as the more mature Star Wars show in Season 1 but Disney execs noticed how much kids loved Grogu and enforced a tonal shift. That would explain all too much.

Absolutely on point, aside from the episode 3 side plot (which feels like it was ripped from another show altogether) this whole season has had brainless saturday morning cartoon vibes. I even got the impression when the season opened focusing on the child foundling that he was supposed to be some kind of stand in for the intended audience, "see kids, you can be like the Mandalorian too! Don't forget to buy all your Mando toys and accessories just like boring foundling kid over here!"

It's an episode that would be passable in a 22 episode season. Not one where we are halfway through already. I agree, the flashback scene was great. The writers seem to have their finger on the pulse regarding what fans want some of the time, which makes you wonder why they don't write more of it in their stories.

@@yeetnessmcfinn501 "filler" doesnt always apply as a concept though. The good star trek shows werent structured with a focus on an overarching plot most of the time.. It was very much an episodic "what will the crew encounter this week" structure, which was great. Mando season 1 had a lot of that going on and I loved it.. Season 2 introduced more pressing plot elements and reduced the episodic angle a bit. The problem isnt "filler episodes" Its that the direction of the show took a more plot heavy angle during season 2 and season 3 refuses to follow up on it whch is really annoying.

This review, unlike last week's Picard review, was spot-on. It is shocking to me how little has transpired in spite of having four episodes out of eight already behind us. It's not even that I want or need stuff to happen at a breakneck pace, but this is barely a crawl now. While I appreciate that they didn't stretch out Din's journey to Mandalore for his cleansing over the whole season, it still wrapped up rather quickly, and now I don't know where they're headed next. What's worse is, where they are now in terms of story makes no sense. A couple of points that stand out for me: Why are the Mandalorians so incompetent? Like you said, they're supposed to be the stuff of legend; the best hunters/warriors/assassins in the SW universe, and yet they can't figure out how to keep their children, their future generations, safe from randomly appearing predators? That's ridiculous!!! Maybe find a place to live that's not quite so inhospitable Why does Bo-Katan seem perfectly fine with being a Child of the Watch now? She flat-out called them a "cult" in the first episode of the season and even blamed them for scattering her people. Now, she's just one of the gang. Either she's waiting to take what she needs from them to further her own goals, since she no longer has followers of her own, at which point she'll flip deuces and peace-out on them, or she's looking to eventually convert them from their traditionalist ways in order to unite what few Mandalorians still exist. Those are the only two motivations that make sense for Bo-Katan right now. Finally, your mileage may vary, but the cuteness factor for Grogu is starting to wear thin for me. Don't get me wrong; the little guy is still adorable, but there needs to be a narrative direction for him, now that he's apparently left the Jedi path behind, and I'm struggling to take seriously the idea of him becoming a Mandalorian. When he was just a little guy in a hover-stroller that Din had to protect so he could be handed over to the Jedi, him just being cute was passable enough. Now that he's moved on from that, he needs something to be/do besides Din's cute space-kid.

I feel like I'm watching a different show. Are people on a hate brigade or avoiding some show don't tell moments. Bo-Katan's change is shocking to you. The entire 2 episodes explain it. She bathed in the water, and saw a thing of legend that represents their creed, plenty even in real life switch religion over merely surviving a traumatic event or meeting someone who seems holy aka its the old agnostic vs religious debate. Its taking a simple idea, oh mando is stupid religion dumb and making it more gray which is fair given the force and other religious aspects of starwars. She saw them as cultists, was symbolically baptized, came out of the water, accepted into a family. The Mandalorians are shown as a found family, they encourage foundling and finding people to join. (AKA they took the children of the monster they killed on accident sorta.) They call people they look over their kids. The symbolism still stands that they feel like orphans, eat alone, feel alone, and feel they aren't actually a part of the family they have. She constantly feels or shows by body language she doesn't know if she is about this, she asks them questions about eating, and so on. (Note the meme of her being all alone in that castle vs now. But juxtaposed to her still eating alone.) A lot of stuff is here in these episodes, maybe I'm not seeing all the stuff to hate, or I got to watch back-to-back, but I feel this season is more character and story less overarching do this to save the --- which I like. Less defeat the evil win storytelling. I'll admit thou I'm not big on nitpicks and the stuff that takes others out of a story, like lack of an explanation for the boy surviving don't bother me as I can assume from clues they have had this occur before, and the creature keeps them alive etc. To be fair people also love to state joe reviews are near flawless with great call-outs for issues when it's just his opinion as he says and in actuality he gave great stuff with universal praise bad scores because he just wasn't in the mood (stranger things season 4) and wanted the plot faster or didn't like binging so much material. Which can be hard.

While I preferred seeing Bo kick dino butt on her own right away, instead of babies they could have wrote that the nest had eggs about to hatch and the boy was living food for hatch day, stuck in a nest on the top of the spire. That would have bought them the narrative time for the war party. Hatching birds could have been used to crank up the tension during a battle with mama dino.

They kind of already did that with the spider thing in season 1 though. They could have just set up the whole hunting party led by Bo from the beginning as the kids first hunting trip. They must have brought in the writers of the Boba series with how the writing has been going. Bo-Katan is starting to remind me of Fennec, a cool female character that just becomes the problem-solving god for everyone to look up to, while the rest of the cast are bumbling around. Yes, I want her to be capable, but not at the cost of the rest of the cast sharing a single brain cell between them.

I don't know if someone explained this but I have to ask. Yoda was 900 years old by the end of Return of the Jedi but as he says in empire strikes back he trained jedi for 800 years so he was 100 when he started teaching. Will Grogu develop in the next 50 years to reach adulthood even though he is still a child at 50?

A two year old wrote this episode. Why would that creature wait to kill its prey? Why would Bo tell the kid to grab her hand when she was 15 feet away, in the air? Why would they rest under a ledge all night knowing the kid was probably dead already? Why would these people live on a planet where every second they can be eaten by something? Why does anyone think that Grogu is even remotely interesting at this point? He sits around with crap in his diapers and does a few flips now and then. Why is everyone on the shore "training" where a Godzilla sized crocodile just tried to eat them all a few episodes ago? The Mandalorians look like cosplayers going to the next SDCC. And now they can scale the sides of mountains like professional athletes? And they can take their helmets off when there are no other people around? Which is it? Never remove the helmet? Or remove it when you need to eat and go to the bathroom? "Mesa thinkin this is a badden idea." I miss Jar Jar Binks. At least he was interesting.

This season is really shaping up to be a "finds themselves/remebers themselves" kind of season for the primary characters involved. Din has redeemed himself as a Mandalorian and is "passing on" his traditions to Grogu and Bo. Grogu, for his part, is finding himself while also remembering more of his past that brought him to this point. Bo Katan is sort of coming back from the brink of having lost her entire clan and people, and then finding and connecting with the sect that she always looked upon with such derision, and in turn finding the Mandalorian in herself again in their traditions. The scientist and former Imperial officer who betrayed him (I'm not convinced she killed him in that episode, but maybe "programed" the Imperial back into him, we'll see) I really don't know where that's going other than maybe setting up some kind of big bad for the season. But Joe is right, there really isn't so much of a throughline for this season and the severely shortened episodes definitely aren't helping things. I have no idea where they're going with this season but I have a bad feeling the combination of no overarching story and very short episode runtimes is going to make the ending of it feel very lackluster and underwhelming.
@TheMelancholicWriter

As a huge Din fan, I'm finding it really frustrating seeing him portrayed like this, but dare say it elsewhere and you're called toxic. I don't mind seeing character development of other characters but not to the detriment of the main character for the majority of episodes. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the season, but I don't want to see the main character side-lined. The show is 'THE Mandalorian' , whom Jon F has said multiple times is Pedro. I think that the episode should have been adding more to the idea of the Mandolrians getting together and pulling other groups together to get Mandor back on track. Bo Katan mentioning the mythosaur at the end of the episode made me think that maybe there should have been talks/discussions over the myths and legends surrounding it, maybe hint that it has a part to play this season? Given that the main plot teased was all about going to Mandor as a main point, made me assume that there was going to be focus this season with Din, Bo-Katan, and the Armorer possibly having a reason to esclate things to get the planet rebuilt to some extent despite the limitations (the planet IS fucked so there's only so much they can do) and maybe have the season with them dealing with the Empire getting back at them and possibly other Mando groups giving them trouble. Maybe that will happen (at least the Empire and going to Mandor with a larger group) abut for 4 episodes left I am naturally concern but hold some optimism.
