Fugo is such an interesting character on-paper, it's a shame that he was so screwed over by the plot. His one fight in Part 5, he's not even that important in- it's mostly there for Giorno and Abbacchio's stories, his dynamic with Narancia is underexplored and while I understand Araki's reasoning, the traitor plotline being scrapped means there's zero payoff to him leaving, it just comes out of nowhere and even then he's not the focus of it, it's meant to be there for Narancia's sake. It's cool that other materials have expanded on him (PHF in particular did so much for him), but when taking only Part 5 into account, he's just there in the background, gets a couple interospective moments, and then peaces out and the plot carries on as if he was never there, hes never even so much as mentioned after that point. It's a pity.

One thing I'm a bit confused on is, is Purple Haze really uncontrollable? The time we see it in Man in the Mirror Abbacchio says something along the lines of "if Fugo was here he wouldn't let it behave like this." And while I haven't read Golden Heart Golden Ring, in PHF the only time Purple Haze seems to act outside of Fugo's control is when it's snarling in the arena at the beginning and Sheila E makes a snide comment about not keeping it behaved. But other than openly showing some of Fugo's more primal emotions without the self control and intelligence, I don't think it's the case the Fugo can't actually control him. It seems to do what he wants just fine, yet I see most fans take the approach that Fugo can't control it. I think it's more so the virus he can't control, as once it's out it spreads with no bias, but Purple Haze itself is fine.
@masterzoroark66644 жыл бұрын
Good points. Guess Purple Haze can act on self accord when Fugo doesn't give it the orders, like your brain goes out and lizardbrain takes over
@arthurpprado4 жыл бұрын
My perspective is that Fugo can mostly control it but more like a dog owner tugging on the leash when their dog starts barking at someone. I see that especially when Fugo commands Purple Haze to attack the mirror in the fight with Illuso. Any other Stand would have just punched the mirror once or do something with more finesse like writing a message or pointing at the mirror, but Purple Haze does a Stand Rush and only attacks the mirror with its last punch. Also, when Purple Haze finally attacked Illuso, it would be fine to just burst a capsule on him and let the virus do its job but Purple Haze lashed out and punched him repeatedly, despite Illuso already being very close to dead. In short, it seems to me like Fugo can give commands to Purple Haze just fine but Purple Haze will do things its way and will act on its own in stupid, obsessive and violent ways if not carefully commanded

in this case when people refer to fugo as being unable to control purple haze i think most people are referring to its ability/the virus. the virus’ indiscriminate killing is one the stand’s main cons, and the only part of the stand fugo himself cannot control.

10:47 "This is an anime adaptation of this scene, and Araki was likely not consulted on this backstory" That's not true. The backstory was actually very directly approved by Araki. The anime team worked on the backstory themselves and sent the proposal to Araki for approval. I don't know if their proposal was the exact story we got, or if Araki suggested changes until the idea was finalised, but he was 100% consulted on the idea. I got this from an Anime News Network interview that was done with the producers of the show, if anyone wants a source.

They got approval but he wasn't consulted on the backstory, he just approved of the story itself which is the same for all of the different approaches to Fugo's backstory. "We talked at length with the scenario writer about how we would like to approach telling Fugo's backstory, and then we brought our finished proposal to Araki-sensei. We thought it was very important to detail Fugo's past for this version of the story, so we worked hard on it." "In terms of our general approach to creating original elements for animation, they have to be something that will enhance the work's appeal. Even though these elements are new, they must never step away from the intent of the original work. That's the angle we work hardest on, always thinking about how the audience will feel about the story." They made a story and brought it too Araki who likely just approved it like he's done for other projects involving him.

personally i think the anime adaptation has a good take on it, fugo had the "gifted child treatment", which as a result of immense pressure, being given expectations that you can't reach and unattainable self standards, leads to mental illness. it's traumatic for young children to be put under so much stress especially when the psyche is so easily influenced during the sensitive periods of development (infancy up to age 6) which, if a child is deprived of the appropriate support and affection from parents, can become a "problem child" i.e. anger issues. that's around the time where fugo develops his anger, but it isn't uncontrollable from the moment he starts to struggle with it. university for someone fresh out of high school is very mentally taxing (from personal experience), never mind a 13 year old with immense pressure to excel as a prodigy. he never really got to live his childhood, so he likely lacks that emotional bond with his parents which explains why he's not as distraught over being disowned as you'd expect someone to be. as for the "snapping" in university, it's a mentally unsound child's reaction to a traumatic event. the years of him repressing (important note: NOT letting out his anger in other ways like crying or talking about it etc. he literally bottles it up which is what causes an emotional snap) his bouts of anger followed by his professor forcing himself on him, which is by definition, a traumatic event, caused his brain to react in a way that just. released EVERYTHING. and he was the one at fault for that because he PHYSICALLY hurt someone despite the psychological wounds on fugo being.. irreparable, at best. so, his suffering was once again dismissed and this just adds onto the stuff he's already dealing with, and it snowballs. i think it was snowballing from the point AFTER he snapped from bottling up all of his anger for so many years and his brain releasing it in a means of protecting him from the professor's advances, fugo literally being the "fight" in fight or flight, when he only ended up in more danger (no guardians, being expelled, arrested etc.) which may? have been the catalyst for his stand manifesting. he's scared of what purple haze can do, and he's scared of what his volatile emotions can do to others and himself. he says purple haze is uncontrollable because he himself doesn't know how to cope with all that has happened to him, he thinks it's out of his control because of how it affects him emotionally. he likely can't remember most of his childhood because of repression as well - fugo probably doesn't know WHY he has these emotional issues and can't remember the source of all his problems. so, to him, it's uncontrollable - reflecting in purple haze (and purple haze distortion, in the PHF novel)

And while lashing out at the teacher was certainly justified, which would set Fugo apart from the others who made bad choices,the anime still makes it pretty clear that Fugo does have legitimate anger issues. Even if he hadn’t been targeted by that teacher, I suspect that eventually something else would have caused him to snap.

I feel like there's pros and cons to every adaptation of Fugo's backstory. I prefer the anime because it helps me relate most to Fugo - I was put under heavy academic pressure for my intelligence by my parents, but I was sexually abused, too. Fugo was falsely accused of wanting/enjoying what happened between him and his professor, and in some cases people even say he did it as a way to get into the uni. So without any external validation, Fugo's left to see himself as needlessly cruel. Sexual abuse, on the other hand, leaves one feeling very dirty (Purple Haze is obsessed with cleanliness) and feeling like everyone and everywhere is unsafe and dangerous (Purple Haze kills everything around him). Paired with a violent disposition and voila, a recipe for rage. Of course, not everyone has to like it. This is just my take, paired with my own interpretations.

I feel like Fugo is actually really well developed even though we see him for only a little bit. We know that Purple Haze is a reflection of his anger and we also know that Fugo only summons it in very dire circumstances, both because of the uncontrollable nature of its very ability, but also due to his hatred towards it. We know from that that Fugo views his anger as both something he can not control and something he hates about himself, which, from fearing his own anger, he fears his other emotions as well. When he was given the choice of going with the gang or not he emotionally wanted to go, but out of his own fear of his emotions he made the logical choice of his own self preservation and decided to not betray the boss. That's my own interpretation of his character at least and the reason why he is my favorite character in JoJo, he is just incredibly written for what he is in the story.

I have to say I do like Fugo's analysis of of Jekyll and Hyde within the Doujin, along with the argument he has with the other student. The girl's analysis of the work isn't really inherently wrong as much as it is a surface-level reading that assumes Jekyll is able to be objective in his letters when describing his other persona. Essentially she takes the words in the story as gospel and examines the work that way. Fugo's analysis is more about digging into the character itself and trying to understand his nature (which is the kind of thought process that would likely prove useful against Stands). By that viewpoint Hyde very much is the desire that Jekyll wants to experience and makes his story one about repression and outbursts. The issue is that type of examination requires a certain type of mentality to consider as it is basically questions the reliability of Jekyll as a narrator. So he's probably closer to being right but there is a stubborness and even a slight bias in his analysis.

i respectfully strongly disagree with your assessment of which pseudocanon backstory for fugo seems the most in line with his character. in my opinion, feedback feels much more in tune with fugo as a character. the point isn't that the incident with his teacher is the inciting incident for his rage, the point is that his anger had been building for his entire life and the one thing that brought him happiness was not only ripped away from him, but he wasn't even given a chance to mourn. i believe his choice to finally snap and take control of his life fits more with the other members' backstory than his life being relatively happy and him just being misunderstood. i don't know if this is just because i have a very strong connection to this character, but your analysis kinda feels like you're brushing off debatably the most important part of these characters. their lives (for the most part) are not good before the inciting incident which leads them to the gang, they're mediocre at best, and some injustice thrust upon them shows them how bad the world can be and leads them to bruno. abacchio doesn't realise the danger of accepting the bribe and his partner dies, mista risks his life to save a woman in danger and is wrongfully imprisoned, narancia is tricked by someone he trusts and is made to take the blame for a crime, and bruno's parents split up, he chooses the more difficult life to help his father, and eventually starts working for passione to continue to protect him. you can argue that all of these characters' arcs are started by choices they made, but all of them (with the somewhat exception of abacchio) weren't really choices. they were either decieved, tried to protect their family, or tried to do the right thing.

i think the anime backstory is the best; it makes fugo just in the same way mista was just in shooting the men that were assaulting the woman and then tried to kill him. I don't think it misses the point at all, it still follows the themes of the part. plus i really like that they acknowledge that victims of sexual abuse often develop anger issues (fugo had them before but they were amplified after the abuse) because that's often ignored in media. experiencing abuse as a child fucks with your development but it's usually just portrayed as sadness when a lot of the time it manifests in uglier, less socially acceptable ways, like lashing out, a lack of self-control, feeling empty, abandonment issues etc his stand reflects that lack of control one experiences when and after being abused. it even tries to clean itself which is pretty concerning in the context of his backstory :(

I love a lot of the points he makes during this, but every time he said something like This doesn't fit with the angry outbursts we see Fugo have throughout the manga, as he stabs Narancia for just getting a math problem wrong, I kinda cringe cuz think about it. This is Fugo's first real form of backlash, he still wants to impress his parents and keep his position as a LITERAL 13 YEAR OLD IN COLLEGE. He wouldn't even be there if he already had outbursts like that over something as trivial as a failed math problem! We see him trying to contain his anger already during the almost-stabs-his-dad scene, so it only makes sense that his first lashing-out would require pressure more infuriating than a slow student. That said, this comment is on a 3 month old video so i'll be lucky if someone so much as scrolls past and doesn't read it cuz it's so damn long.

When I heard that Fugo in GHGR was basically some angry rich kid, it threw me off from reading it. But considering Araki’s plans for the character, I think I have a theory. Basically Fugo is meant to represent someone who was in the top of society causing his own downfall, kinda like Abbacchio(which is why they seem to be paired in MiTM) compared to being in a underprivileged position like Narancia. Every character in P5 develops into someone who can face their worst traits head on and have the resolve to chage their fate. But not Fugo. His inability to grow as a person and stick to the traditional is what would be his undoing. It why Gio was to kill him, as Gio would represent the new, the change for the better, the Golden Wind. Sorry if this is rambling but I really like Fugo and all the ways he can be interpreted. I love the anime (especially the symbolism of PH and how it ties to his sexual assault, like the stiching in his mouth and how SA victims are often silenced ). As well as PHF Fugo with him and Bucci meeting in jail. I love this cheese boi so much DP please animate PHF please!!
@rhiabloom122 жыл бұрын
My point of view when it comes to different canonish explanations (As my understanding is that none of there were written by Araki, he just approved them) is to mash them together into a version that is the most sensible to you. For me Fugo having a larger role in the organization and being somewhat of a spy is important, especially as that is closest to what Araki initially intended. The GHGW emphasis of him pushing people away also makes sense. And then it makes most sense for him to have gone to prison like in PHF as that keeps in line with “the society negatively affecting him” motif you mentioned.

Cioccolata is the suspiciously similar replacement for Fugo. How would Fugo matched up with him? They're both the smartest person of their organization, they both have super destructive power. However, Cioccolata's Green Day is indiscrimating and can be used in very creatively. Fugo's Purple Haze is even more discriminating in that Fugo isn't immune to its effect.

Agreed regarding the anime backstory - I really appreciate it highlighting the very sad reality of how sexual assault cases are often twisted around so that the victim gets more backlash than the attacker - but it didn't fit the point of Fugo's rage.

I really liked the adaptation of Fugo’s backstory in the anime. Something about it just made my sympathize with him and care for the character so much more. I believe that the anime’s adaptation was the canon one, but I think that’s just me speaking from personal opinion.

If Fugo had a backstory, he’d prefer it to be multiple choice.

I personally like the anime explanation I really would’ve liked it if she would’ve helped Bruno and gang when they decide to go against the boss but he didn’t
