Mike McKones Starfire (7:10) takes the cake for me. She’s muscular yet feminine. Like, Mike did not play when it came to making Kori muscular. Totally get the muscle love, but I'm not crazy about her costume. Starfire's powers worked in a way so that her species (and her in particular) could always be sexualized/objectified potentially forever, and I do find that look and N52 to be some notorious examples of artists taking advantage.

@@Gemini053 oohhh good point on Avatar. I feel like that's always been another comparison that would get made the moment they adapt Starfire solo. So writers need to be careful and try to get original. The cat-like look makes sense because Tamaraneans ARE feline canonically.

@@TheSsjJoker oh yeah they were dropping Star Wars references (mostly Beastboy) in her very first few issues of The New Teen Titans (80s Pérez/Wolfman era, when Star Wars was just EXPLODING no doubt). I think because her initial introduction as a space princess being hunted by Gordanian troopers was pretty much Leia's first arc on New Hope (sorta)? Ngl I used to think that Tamaranean starbolts are solar-energy so they could give Kryptonians an insta-boost, so when Superboy and Blackfire met in the Titans show I was like "this makes sense lore wise" lol (despite Connor not being a true kryptonian). Anyway, to go deeper -- I feel like the Vega Star system itself has the potential to be it's own corner of the DCU that is much more defined closer to more sci fi tropes and stuff. It's the one star system that GL Corps have no jurisdiction in canonically so that itself makes me think "SHOW ME MORE" lol

6:22 I must say, technically Blackfire in her OG debut had this disease that made it so she couldn't absorb UV light to fly like other Tamaraneans, so that could explain why she stays more covered up (aside from further showing how different she is from the rest of her people).

Thank you so much for making this! I think the Titans live-action got a few good things and a lot of bad ones. It inspired that Tamaran would be something akin to a Babylon V or Farscape-like genre, but it wasn't embracing her warlords-of-okaara angle. Plus I thought the '03 animated seties really made her feel like this Asian exchange student almost, and being anime-inspired, made her sister Blackfire an absolute beast: Abusive, manipulative, and you 100% believed she had her own slave-trade business going on. We needed more of that. My favourite is the original Pérez one which absolutely had Star Wars/slave Leia in mind when designing that (there were references to Star Wars in-text). Anyway, when Kori becomes a supermodel under Donna's lens, thats another dynamic. Wish we got ALL of that and that they've delved into Tamaran culture more. They're also inspired by the ThunderCats to an extent. It was an 80s aesthetic 😂 I also didn't think they did a good job with writing her or Blackfire on Titans. She came off waaay too much as a diva rather than her personality conflicting between doe-eyed newgirl missing her family and her angry, hardened girl who doesnt let bitterness take her no matter what. I liked how she almost seemed like a Middle-Eastern princess at times, like she's from Saudi Arabia or something 😂 but if we are going by the comics it should have been the other Asian princesses they took ideas from the 😂

6:30 The only reason Kormand'r (Blackfire) wears a full bodysuit is because she can't naturally absorb solar raditation like all other Tamaraneans (basicly disabled for Tamaranean standers) which is one of the reasons her people dsliked her and was denied the right to the throne. Thou I don't know if that weakness is still active but I do wish they'd reinforced it, by showing how solar absorption affects Tamaran like how flying is a necessary part of travel and how she needs similar tech to the Psions, that gave all three siblings their powers, to recharge, just bring it back.

Titans United is her best look by far for me. But I do kinda hope they retcon it so that it's not a planet-wide color to make it more personalized for her. Or maybe just use it as her reminding people of her royal status after her sister (or someone else now) overthrew her family.

@CS08129 Definitely, without it looking bulky or boring. And I always felt like a well-managed Kory would be the alien Wonder Woman. I could see her going under Diana's tutelage, as well as looking to Clark for advice as another alien on Earth (like she did in her solo series). Plus her ties to Dick means she may cross paths with Batman at some point--I don't think they ever interacted, tbh--so that means that she stands to be a student to the Trinity.

the look at 10:24 was Starfire as Flamebird (long story short - in the comics, Flamebird is the first Batgirl, Bette Kane who later adopts the identity of Flamebird to mirror Robin's shift to Nightwing as both are inspired by Kryptonian heroes)

One of my favorite DC heroes and starting off with Mega Man X music? This'll be pretty cool. I always dig videos going over the history of characters, including visual histories like this one. Outside of the OG and 2003 designs, I think JL Odyessy is cool looking, if not a little Storm-ish, with the gold. Injustice 2's would be up there if it toned down the texture and kept it a little more normal. The 2015 one isn't bad at all either, but I wish she had the curly hair for that one.

Sorry I can't shed light on who drew that image youre trying to hunt down, but i do know where 10:20 comes from! When you theorize it might be Starfire dressed as Robin, you're...close. She's actually wearing the costume of the original, pre-Barbara Gordon Bat-Girl, Betty Kane, who premiered in 1961. She was the "Robin" to Batwoman Kathy Kane (long before and quite different from her reinvention as Kate Kane in the 21st century). Batwoman and Bat-Girl were introduced rather ham-fistedly to stave off accusation by Dr. Wertham that Batman & Robin would leads kids into homosexual pedophilia, so Kathy & Betty were almost more romantic foils for Bruce & Dick than they were capable crime fighters. After the simultaneous introduction in both the comics and on the TV show of Babs Gordon as the Batgirl everyone remembers, Kathy and Betty were basically quietly retired, but they have been re-visited over the years. Betty, notably, served as a member of Titans West in the era before the 80s run that introduced Starfire. Post-Crisis, Betty was retconned as Bette Kane, and instead of Bat-Girl, her heroic identity was Flamebird. But the costume Starfire is wearing in the panels shown in the video is the original Silver Age Bat-Girl costume!

24:28 …as well as the time Lobo proceeded to rip off her torso piece (Or whatever it’s called either by her or someone else) I’d probably use elements of these designs from the Gauntlets, Boots/Leggings, Hips, Torso and hair styles and incorporate them into my design that would best represent her aesthetic though the years since her inception. (Granted it’ll be hit or miss depending on other’s taste) Edit: I hear a lot of Persona5 music

It's been different shades of orange or orange-ish bronze over the years, and has been dark or bright orange in her canon appearances since the New 52 with rare exception. The last time she was gold (that I can remember) was during the Convergence: Titans limited series, and that was specifically featuring the New Teen Titans designs. And even that wasn't as bright gold as in the past, but you get my point.

In DC Superhero Girls (2019), Starfire and the other Teen Titans are supposed to be little kids and the show’s main cast has to babysit them. The last image you showed for it is a fan-made concept, yeah. This version of the show is so much better than its predecessor; it’s genuinely a really fun watch even if you’re not in the target audience. Great video! :D
