The editing, the pacing, the focus - everything so profoundly different without the music.

It takes bravery to direct and edit a scene knowing it WILL NOT work unless the composer delivers. There seem to be fewer directors today who would let this scene play out like Spielberg does here and in many of his films. Modern edits are paced on getting to the next moment of dialogue or action. There are still great scores but the films probably "worked" at the rough cut already with temp music or no music. The dialogue and action are driving the movie with fewer contemplative, suspenseful, or hugely emotional moments. The Shanghai sequence from Skyfall is the only example I can think of in recent movies where the composer is given THIS much trust to carry the scene.

Brilliant analysis--there is a trust between Williams and Spielberg that makes these kinds of scenes a joy to behold.
@TheGeorgeD135 жыл бұрын
You don't see very many modern movies then. The majority of films still place a huge amount of trust that the composer can carry a scene or even the entire movie. You're probably only watching a few mediocre big budget films a year or something.

By the way, do you have the complete score for the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban?

We'll take anything else you've got just laying around if it's still this good.
@Foebane725 жыл бұрын
FSA, this is FRAUDULENT. You haven't got access to the original multi-track tapes for the soundtrack, you've simply muted the original audio and added your own sound FX! How appropriate that this whole scene has no dialogue, makes your job easier!

I actually like this, feels very Kubrick-esque

I don't know why, but there is a lot more tension this way. Maybe because silence gives you more the feeling that something terrible can happen at any moment.

Wow. I love these so much. Please keep on doing your awesome work.

Williams' impact on the pacing and story are what make him such a great film composer. Without the music, the action beats in this scene feel too introspective and, frankly, boring. This kind of interaction between the composer and the story is sadly lacking in today's film music.

Yea, I see a lot of these comments saying the scene is weak without the music. But I think it highlights more the high suspense of Indiana while he intently watches the light drift to its destination. With the score, which I love, it seems almost as though he's reacting to the music, but without it you can almost hear him thinking about why this is the reason he got into archaeology in the first place

If a little echo was added since it's a large chamber, and perhaps the subtle sound of wind it would be 100% usable

One of the best lessons I've seen on film scores is the ending of Grand Canyon. If you start watching from where Danny Glover and Kevin Kline are playing basketball to the end, I think you'll see what I mean.

why did you give indy heavy breathing? lol It still works without music it turns it into one of those late 70s films that didn't worry about soundtracks and just let the drama of the scene speak for itself but ofcourse Williams enhanced what on paper would've looked like a pretty perfunctory scene

The problem with this video is that the sound FX are NOT from the soundtrack: the staff Indy snaps sounds different, as does the "flop" from the Nazi flag landing on his head, and no doubt everything else.
