Marble's currently produces three "GI" knives. These are knives using Stainless Steel Scales, stamped "US" In this episode I compare them to the old Camillus Dura-Tools and suggest a few other knives I feel should be candidates for the series.

i'm only gonna say one thing about that "colt" when the design was made by marbles the liner lock was super thin and i had one that i kept in my pocket daily, until i handed it to my cousin who opened it and was using it and the liner lock went past the back of the blade to the opposite side which allowed the blade to close on his hand. i still have the spike from it but after that happened and we got home from getting his stitches i took the grinding wheel to it so it wouldn't happen again

@@nunyafuckinbizniz not even close, the liner lock went to far and no longer held the blade from closing, the metal used was so weak it bent when the blade closed on it

A couple of years ago I bought a Camillus "Rope" knife at a local junk store. It was made in 1943. I paid $25 for it which is about what it's worth. It has been heavily used. Camillus got a federal government contract to produce these for the Navy and Coast Guard during the early forties. It seems that something was going on at that time. I mention this pattern because it might fit in with this collection.

If it is the one I'm thinking about it is the Coast Guard Approved Merchant Marine knife. An excellent knife. I also have several other WWII era knives used by all branches. The old Camillus knives are probably my favorites!

Talk about having so many knives that it is hard to locate all of them. I know I have one of those Marbles Hawk Bills, I used it last fall and because of this video I started looking for it. There goes the rest of the afternoon.

Have the MR278 "GI UTILITY KNIFE"/"Demo Knife" and MR409 folding Hawkbill pruning/carpet/drywall/linolium knife. Great knives. I will get the third in the series sometime this year. At $6.99 plus shipping, they are hard to beat. The only difference between the MR278 and the old Camillus (and other contractor's) issue "Demo Knife" is: the MR278 has Match strike pulls, no "CAN OPENER" stamp on that blade, and is roughly 1/8 inch (0.125 inch) shorter closed, not including the bail, and for the Camillus made knives, anyway, no date. (The WESTERN made Demo knife the US Army Reserves issued my in 1975 (I still have it) does not have a date code. Colonial also made the Demo Knife under government contracts. I don't know if they have a date.) Oh!!! The Marbles at $6.99 plus shipping is also considerably less expensive than a pre 2007 Camillus and other contract issue/Mil Surplus knives. I am not sure if the US military is still handing them out to active duty personnel. No doubt they had several warehouses full in 2007, when Camillus shut down. Who knows if they have run out yet? I hear they are issuing Gerber Multitools now.... Another Suggestion for the GI line: Marbles MR139 "Fish Knife". Folded stainless steel handle, single 3.5 inch clip point blade with fish scaler on the spine. A slip joint, no old style tab liner lock.

I like the demo knife. Just bought my 3rd one to use for my deployment. I pair it up with my Ontario pilot survival knife. Also bought the smaller sheep's foot one, but not a big fan of it so I gave it to a buddy.
@KnifeChatswithTobias

The smaller sheepfoot is patterned off an Italian Army knife from the 1980's. It is interesting but I can see why you passed it on. It just isn't as versatile as the demo knife.

"I will never fall apart in your hand" could be etched on all that blades..(the colt aside, for what Richard said). Also , someone skillful with the sharpening stone can put the real value on them, as the life of a knife begins with the baptism of the owners edge. Great collection! Thank you Tobias!

The reason why they added G10 on the handle of the Marlinspike knife is a riddle to me, probably they thought hey that G10 seems to attract a lot of knife buyers. For me it doesn't add any beauty. The Hawkbill is a very attractive knife, i only wonder how to sharpen it easy, because of that curved blade. I had to smirk a little when i thought how funny it would have been if you did the review as yourself, but in that mirrorblade you had the sunglasses on and Skips hat. My compliments how well you did the mergions in the slideshow, very proffesional! Thank you Tobias for the video, oh that what-a-knife would be very nice to have in the line-up with a clevis.

It was purely to cover up the blank area where Smith & Wesson use to inscribe their name. A more logical thing to do would've been to simply etch "Rigging Knife" in the same location. But then, someone needed to over think so they could claim it as their own.

That type of liner lock can be difficult to unlock. I’ve noticed the same issue with some locking Victorinox knives.

I've had issues with a variety of liner locks. On thing for certain is the tend to wear out over time much more quickly than a lockback.

I think that these styles of knives are good ones to use and well made. Being connected to knives adopted and used by the military proves their quality. I haven’t any original ones, just a few copies of the originals I still like them just the same. Glad to see the story of ones that do. Thank you for the look. 🙂

@@lostcat9lives322, today many folks don’t like them. 10 years ago they were all the rage. Some companies have used etches forever. Used to be, among Boy Scouts you could brag about how you had used your knife so much the etch was gone. There was pride in working the etch off. Now it’s if I use the knife the etch might get scratched. 😂
